Top tips for hiring a car in Bora Bora

  • Bear in mind the speed limits in Bora Bora with your hire car.  In urban areas, the limit is 25mph and 50mph for rural roads. Be careful to stay within the limits as roads can be narrow and winding and many rural roads are unpaved and unpredictable. It is not unusual to encounter many dogs and children playing on the rural routes as traffic can be generally light, so take extra caution in these areas.
  • Be aware of petrol station opening hours on the island of Bora Bora as many have closing times around 17:00 to 18:00 and close completely on a Sunday. You will find most petrol stations on the coastal roads, mostly in the region around Vaitape, so make sure you fill up your tank when you see a petrol station, especially if you are venturing inland where you may find limited or non-existent options in the interior.  As the island is small, it should be relatively easy to reach a petrol station if you feel you are running low as it is possible to get around the island on around 10 L of fuel.
  • Drinking and driving is illegal in Bora Bora with blood alcohol limits set at 0.05%. You may find this rule is ignored to some extent by local drivers, but do not be tempted to follow suit as penalties may be severe and you need to be alert while driving, especially in new terrain. It is always advisable to leave your car parked up if you plan to have an evening out drinking alcohol.  Car parking is accessible around the island, and you will also find you have parking available with your accommodation.
  • Book your car hire in Bora Bora at least 5 days before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Economy hire cars in Bora Bora are around 31% cheaper than other car types, on average
