Pay attention to highways on summit and valley. FOX caused me so many porblems of my driver license issue. It ended up they jacked up the price of 3 days rental to 600 USD and convint me to purchase the rental. Eventually I walked to the next door , THRIFTY, and Thrifty didn’t give me any problem. They also offer me a decent deal. I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH FOX AGAIN

I had booked in advance and got a confirmed reservation for a SUV but when I went to the Hertz office in LA, the car was not available. The staff just shrugged saying a conformation does not mean the car is available. Really? What else do I need a confirmed reservation for but to make sure the desired car is really there? They gave me a car that was damaged, tank half empty, dirty, low tire pressure warning on, much to small. I had to cramp 5 people with luggage into a compact. Calling Hertz was useless, I never got a chance to talk to a real person. I had to physically drive to different locations and ask to get the right car. Finally I did, but this took the first day of vacation.

The car was extremely clean and it was great. The pickup location was a bit confusing, Initially I was not specifically aware that the pickup location was at the Marriott hotel. The address indicated the specific location; however, when the rental indicated it was through Hertz, I took the Hertz shuttle to the Hertz rental location. The Hertz rental location is nearby the actual pickup location and it did not say anywhere on my rental that I was picking up from the Marriott location. A simple indication it was Marriott location would have been great.

Everything went perfect with my car rental the entire trip. The only problem that leaves a sour taste in my mouth, which is making me leave a less than positive review, is that when I went to pick up the car I was charged a “Young Driver Fee.” While I am under 25, I had previously confirmed over the phone with an employee at the store that presenting my AAA membership card would wave the young driver fee. However when I land in Los Angeles to pick up my car, I am charged practically double what I expected. The employee at the counter informed me that because I “did not book the rental through AAA,” I would not qualify for the discount. Very unprofessional. My family has used Hertz for all of our vacations growing up, and now that I am taking my own trips I felt comfortable going with a company I knew. After this I may reconsider my loyalties.

I reserved a regular SUPPLIER CHOICE vehicle, and when I arrived at the Herz in North Hollywood they claimed that I reserved an EV, which I did not. I showed them my reservation that clearly says "Supplier Choice" and they still refused to allow me to take a regular vehicle. They said I had to take their EV, BUT the one they wanted to give to me only had around 51% battery and would only take me "161 miles" according to the agent. The whole purpose of me renting a car was because I needed to travel yesterday so I had to have something that would take me around 400 miles. He said my only option would be to upgrade to their only available SUV. As I had to travel that day, I had no choice, and was subsequently charged an extra $212.28 to drive it off the lot. After I was forced to pay the extra fee, they told me their SUV had an empty tank. So, I had to wait at the Herz location for 45+ minutes for them to fill it. Once I was able to drive it away with a full tank, the car was dirty and the minute I got on the freeway the "Oil Change" light came on. I would like, at the very LEAST a refund of the upgrade charge since it was not my fault Herz booked me for the incorrect vehicle type. But they refuse to help me. Also for giving me practically no option but to upgrade for an incredibly steep additional price just to give me a faulty car that needed gas, oil, and was dirty. Because they have not helped me at all with any of these issues, I won’t be renting with Hertz again.

The hertz representative said they could not honor my prepaid agreement. First, the representative indicated he didn’t have any vehicles available, even though I had a confirmed prepaid reservation. Then he initiated that if I wanted a vehicle, I would have to pay an additional 200 dollars, which I did. This was a terrible experience

most car rental places at LAX pick you up directly. midway makes you take this bus, operated by the airport, which stops at every terminal and then brings you to a random area which then you get off and then finally head to the rental location. once there, they have no bathroom, and the line moves super slowly. better to spend another $50 per day to avoid this hassle.

I’m glad they were able to switch the driver name after we booked, I didn’t realize whoever makes the booking is automatically the driver but of course. The staff was patient and friendly. It would have been nice if they brought the car up from the parking spot. I am recovering from foot surgery and had specifically asked if they can bring up the car. No other “complaints” lol thanks team :)

I rented a car in the LA and and returned in Las Vegas. Everything went well. Only at LA airport it took a while for the shuttle appear to take us to the rental office, but the traffic was chaotic. Return the car to Las Vegas was very easy and quick.

I was told when I arrived in LAX that they “lost my reservation” which made no sense because I was able to show them my confirmation email. They were not helpful with resolving the issue and had an attitude like it was my fault. I was given the tiniest car that barely fit my suitcases and halfway thru the trip the check engine light came on. Luckily the roadside agent was pleasant and helpful but we still had to make a detour to Oklahoma City airport to exchange cars, this customer service agent was more helpful but was unable to extend my rental due to the delay, he explained it was a computer issue that didn’t allow him to help, this needs to be resolved on a corporate level because I lost multiple hours detouring to get a new car and was still expected to return it on time. The drop off at South Bend airport is not explained in detail, I circled the lot looking for a drop box to return the key in 4 degree weather, had to exit my car and walk down a walkway with almost no signage until I found a sign that said the drop box was inside, you can’t see this sign from the lot and the Avis website does not describe where it is.

Finding the pick up location at LAX was confusing. It is not where the other rental car pick shuttles are located. Once at the Westin, the line to check-in took forever and then I was rudely told they have no more cars in the class I reserved and blamed it on the third party vendors for over selling. I could either pay extra to get a car or they would cancel my reservation. The car was clean. The electronics in the car were a little sketchy. The car would connect and disconnect from apple car play constantly to the point where it was unsafe to use. Upon return I left my jacket in the car. I have called, texted, emailed. No response. Nu is impossible to get a hold of. Even when I had a question about pick up location and texted the number they suggested, 2 weeks later, still no response. I would never use this company again.

I liked the car and the quickness, friendliness, and easy of the workers in the garage who checked it out and in. The communications about how to get from airport to hotel were misleading and unhelpful. 1. Instructed to take shuttle from LAX to Westin hotel, I went to the "rental car shuttle" line outside the airport and waited well over a half hour while no NU Car shuttle came by. 2. Instructed by my printed rental confirmation to "call" an (818) # for assistance, I did. Got a recorded message that this number did not take call, only texts. 3. Text reply directed me (and at least a dozen other customers) to a different line to board a Metro bus that we could have been on much earlier. 4. Bus dropped us a remote lot to wait for a NU Car shuttle to hotel. Another long wait. 5. This was easily the worst experience at a car rental place ever in my life and I am 55. Firstly they close at 10 pm which was not clear to me. Their location in LAX is very difficult to get to. I had to take an Uber to get there and paid $33 for it. Then they said that they have to see my insurance papers with all the coverage before they will accept it . This has never happened to me. Who carried their insurance papers and no one ever asks to see them. Others there were also complaining. They would have charged $45 per day for the basic insurance. More than my rental. As I was thinking the person across the counter and one other person in the office began to pressure me by surrounding me and repeatedly ask me to make the choice because it is closing time. I asked them if they could give me 5 min to think and they kept loudly asking me. 2 people were constantly telling me to immediately make a decision. When i reluctantly agreed then they told me the car I had booked was not available and they can only give me a jeep or a dodge sports car. I did not want those because the gas the consumption would be very high. I then asked if I could call my friend to see if they can pick me up at 10'pm, they once again started the same pressure tactics. And this time a really big guy came over and he was nearly shouting. At this point I decided not to rent and leave. So at 10:20 pm, I walked out. As I walked out this person said something that sounded like an obscenity. I would NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO RENT A CAR EVER. I then went over to thrifty and got a car rental in 20 min. Amazingly different experience. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE

Awful. Tonne's of hidden fees. Was quoted as a $35 day rate, when I went to pick up they added a "mandatory" $45 insurance fee supposedly required by law, even though I had insurance through credit card. Declined to pick up and went to Avis. Magically - they didn't have said mandatory fee.

The worst. 1. Rental car closed at 9:30pm not at 10:00 as they said. I couldn’t pick up the car and ended up paying an $80 Uber to my destination 🫠 2. After I spoke with a representative they said they’d hold my reservation until the next day until 10 am. 3. When I arrived to pickup the car my reservation was cancelled and they were charging for extra money. Yes it’s a cheap rental car but the way that they work with time and customer services is the worst. We not dependent on our own time in an airplane and they have to understand that.

Place is a dump, which immediately raised concerns, but the big issue was the agent's trying to upsell constantly. Specifically, they insisted on providing us "collision only" coverage at $23.99 per day unless we could provide them with the declarations page on our insurance coverage. Being a Saturday the insurance company was closed we had a real problem. My wife was eventually able to find an email from the company confirming our coverage with the deductibles (which was what they were really after). We got it resolved, but only after escalating to a supervisor. What we observed with the other customers was more of the same thing - hard sell. Not surprising given the rates, but we won't be coming back. Their hours are 8AM-6PM. If you return off hours there is a different procedure and a fee (I think that it's $22.50) for the drop off. This wasn't a problem for us, as we arrived promptly at 8AM and were quickly processed. But it's another issue.

We were dropped off in the dark to an empty parking lot. Luckily a different company took pity on us and gave us a ride. Once we got to the rental company, we were told that any insurance that we had pre-purchased was invalid, including our own insurance which covered us, as well as our credit card insurance which covered us, as well as the additional insurance I put purchased through their website. They told us we had to pay an extra $369 USD in order to be able to rent the car. I was alone with my three children had already paid for the car rental and had no choice, but to pay the extra fees or be forced to be left in the street at night with my kids. That can really only be considered extortion.

I had called in a couple of times to clarify drop off and shuttle times and was told the location was closed until 5am. So I dropped my party off at the airport for 4:15am then went back to wait at the rental car location to return the vehicle. Because of timing I pre booked an Uber car to pick me up at 5:20 to hopefully get me back to the airport in time for my 7am flight. To my surprise the rental car location drop off was actually open despite what I was told on the phone. So I was able to return the car and get on a shuttle before 5am. So I ended up cancelling my Uber and paying a cancellation fee. The stress of trying to ensure vehicle return, getting to my flight and then wasting money to book an Uber because of bad information over the phone is annoying.

Communication is a real problem for this company. They don’t answer their phone or return calls. I tried multiple times over a two day period. Their “Live Chat” option online is apparently un-manned. Never got a response. Dropoff was a nightmare for me.

There were 2 other guests in front of me upon arrival so i expected a bit of a wait as there was only one person who was at the terminal to assist with the rentals. Once it was my turn i realized that the older woman who was helping guests was very slow and very rude. I would have waited for someone else had ANYONE else been available. The lady did not have the vehicle i requested so i had no choice but to take a smaller vehicle. I was not happy with that but she made it worse that she was unsympathetic and just rude overall. When i dropped off the vehicle, the woman that helped me was very nice and polite so not all employees are rude; just the older woman.

My experience with State Van Rental was ok. The attended was professional and explained there process. What could have been better….. an updated van. I liked and enjoyed the car. The pick up was the worse experience I’ve ever had renting a car. I was told I had to get collision and sign up, get a quote on the spot and pay for it to continue the rental process. Very strange that they don’t have that worked out already. The vehicles were in a shared parking lot. I wasn’t given the paper to hand off to the attendant to receive the vehicle so I had to go back and get it. They only have one shuttle bus so if you miss it you have to wait an hour for the next. It was AWEFUL. I willl never use this company again.

This was legitimately the worst experience I have ever had renting a car in my entire life, and I have rented easily 100 cars. The staff was highly unprofessional, coughing, and snorting in my face the entire time, one of the employees lit a joint in the office while I was trying to understand what the first employee was wanting me to do. This was the worst part. They made me, call my insurance and send multiple forms of paperwork via email at 5 o’clock on a weekday to them stating that I had collision coverage that was not commercial. Even though my insurance agent got on the phone with them stating that I had private rental car collision coverage, this would not suffice. They were trying to scam me into purchasing their collision coverage that they offer. They clearly work on commission. It was an absolute nightmare so much so that I was texting the chat on Expedia to get my reservation that was nonrefundable, canceled. I ended up working with Expedia and getting the reservation canceled , leaving in an absolute sweaty mess after almost 2 hours standing there, trying to get an understanding of what they were demanding of me that has never happened before at any other car rental agency in my life. I would run as fast as you can from this company, it was priceless car rental, also known as 24 seven rent a car. Literally, run.

The routes car rental company management is absolutely mess . We went there at 2.45 pm and didn’t get our car till 4pm and we were only customers they were dealing with . No pick or drop from airport as mentioned, we had to take Uber which costed us extra $25 . The car rental process is not streamlined and manager there when complained had no sympathy/empathy that why is taking so long . I would not recommend this place to anyone

Pros:

The representatives were very nice. I received a prompt call from a very nice person after my complaint about my experience. I was refunded the extra $10.00 I had been charged to get me to the airport in time to catch my flight.

Cons:

Hidden charge - about $4.50 more than quoted by KAYAK. I had to pay $4+ for the inconvenience of waiting longer (they only run every 15 min) for a shuttle; than having to wait 15 mins for another pick up to take me to the car rental. The car was old and smelled. The carpeting was coming away from the floor.

They mixed up my pick up time. I was scheduled to pick up my vehicle at 12 noon, they had me picking up at 2pm. She was adamant about this 2pm pick up time until I showed her my reservation on my phone. After this got worked out, she told me that they not only didn't have the vehicle I requested, they only had one vehicle on site- a gigantic minivan, which isn't ideal for city driving. When returning the vehicle they drop you off about a mile away from the shuttle because, in our driver's words "We don't pay to enter the parking lot" A mile walk carrying luggage at the end of the trip isn't how you want to end a trip.

Got a very dirty car. My pickup appointment was delayed by half hour due to short staffing. When returning the vehicle, i was treated poorly by staff. They weren't attentive in any way. Received a discount but i had to prove the vehicle was dirty...soo glad i took a video.

Cons:

Took me over 40 minutes to get a car. First car I got had broken trunk lock. Instead of replacing this car, stuff starts to guide me how should I close this trunk. Overall, if you want cheap car, this is the place to go. If you want normal service, I wouldn't recommend this place.

Without a comprehensive public transport system, getting around its multiple neighborhoods and seeing its many sights can be a challenge, especially seeing as this isn’t a city that people walk around – which is why the best option here is to rent a car as soon as you arrive. Driving around the city will make you feel like a real Angeleno, though be warned you may well spend much of your time behind the wheel stuck in traffic – LA is famous for its traffic jams, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours. If you can avoid those times, you’ll be fine to go cruising along the endless boulevards or driving along the beachfront, admiring the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Mandatory paperwork for renting a car in Los Angeles

To rent a car in Los Angeles, you’ll need to make sure each driver has a valid driving license. Most rental companies are happy to accept international driving licenses as well as American ones, but it’s always worth double-checking the car rental terms as well. Each rental company has its own rules – some might not be willing to rent to drivers who haven’t held their driving license for 36 months or more, for example.

If you’re traveling from overseas, you will also need to show a valid passport as proof of ID. You’ll also need a credit card so you can pay for the deposit on the car. Don’t have a credit card? Many major car hire agencies will accept debit cards, but some won’t, so it’s best to check in advance. Most car rental companies in LA don’t rent to drivers who are under 21, and many in the city require drivers to be 25 or older – those that rent to younger drivers will often charge higher rates, sometimes known as ‘young driver fees’.

Where to get a rental car at Los Angeles International Airport

If you’re flying into LAX, be aware that all of the car rental companies are off-site and can only be accessed via courtesy shuttles. These shuttles come frequently and are usually easy to find, though navigating your way through the busy airport can be a challenge. The same process can be repeated when you return the car, though make sure to leave plenty of time before your flight, as there can be long lines for drop off at the car rental companies.

Due to its fairly limited public transit system, renting a car is a great way to get around LA and visit its neighboring cities. Some of the most popular shorter driving routes from the City of Angels include trips to San Diego (around a two-hour drive), Santa Barbara (around two hours), and Las Vegas (around four hours). Then there’s the famous California drive along the Pacific Coast Highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco, which takes around nine hours and includes many of the Golden State’s most famous sites, including Big Sur. It’s also possible to drive across the border into Mexico, with Tijuana just a two-hour drive away, but bear in mind you will need a valid passport to cross the border. It could also be worth purchasing a Collision Damage Waiver or Loss Damage Waiver to make sure you’re protected if the car gets damaged.

Though there are car hire companies dotted around the city, the largest concentration of them can be found at LAX, so it’s often the easiest option to pick up your hire car here before heading into the city (especially as this way you avoid having to pay the cab fare to get into LA). All the major car rental companies are here, so you have a wide variety of rental companies and cars to choose from. If you’re not arriving at LAX, there are still plenty of other places to hire cars in the city – ask about local options at your hotel, where they will be able to point you in the direction of the nearest car rental company.

Add a GPS to your rental car

It could also be worth making sure your rental car has a GPS to navigate your way around LA, as the city’s freeways can be particularly confusing for first-time visitors.

The City of Angels is infamous for its traffic, particularly during rush hour when the roads and freeways can get gridlocked. It’s best to avoid driving during this time if you can – on weekdays, rush hour usually runs between 6am-10am and 3.30pm-7pm. Fridays can also be particularly busy on the roads, with locals heading out of town for the weekend.

If you’re planning on using the freeways in LA, look out for the Carpool and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. These are lanes that can only be used if there are two or more people in the car and can be a great way to save vital time and avoid congested lanes when driving on the freeway.

Parking your rental car in Los Angeles

Before renting your car, it’s worth checking whether the hotel you’re staying in offers free parking.Motels and cheaper hotels often offer free parking, while more upmarket establishments tend to charge extra. Streets in all the commercial areas of Los Angeles are metered, and it’s usually easy enough to find a spot. Many of the residential streets near these areas require parking permits, so make sure you always check the signs for local parking information before leaving your car.

Since most people drive in LA, there’s no shortage of gas stations in the city, and all the big-name gas brands are represented. Most gas stations are self-serve, where you pump your own gas, and you can usually pay at the pump.

There are around 4,500 public charging electric vehicle stations dotted around the city, making LA the most electric vehicle-friendly city in California. Of these, only around 550 are free charging stations. Motorists can expect to pay around 30 cents per kilowatt hour for level two charging and around 40 cents per kilowatt hour for direct current charging.
