Aussies (that’s you!) appear to have big travel plans for the next 12 months. In fact, our new research* found that a whopping 90% of us are planning trips domestically and overseas.

Our research reveals travel is such a huge priority that many Aussies are willing to delay life events including saving for a house, changing jobs and even having children!

But if we’re not all jumping into these big life milestones, how are we celebrating new chapters of our lives? That’s right, you guessed it – over half of Australians (57%) say they often turn to travel to kick off a new chapter – or you could say an ‘era’!

Many even believe travel is important in shaping their identity and celebrating milestones like birthdays, kicking off the new year, or surviving a busy work period.

So to help Aussies enter a new life chapter and celebrate, we’ve rounded up some top destinations to consider based on your current era.

In Your Adventure Era?

33% of Gen Z Aussies say they are living in their ‘adventure travel’ era, and it shows, with KAYAK’s flight searches increasing significantly for travel to Central America (increasing up 91% year-over-year) and Asia (increasing 62%). If you’ve ever dreamed of trekking the Himalayas or hiking the Inca Trail, this one’s for you.

In Your Bucket List Era?

Having a picnic under the Eiffel Tower. Taking a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef. Post-lockdown, Boomers are prioritising their ‘bucket list travel’ era, with 29% opting for trips to the iconic over the exotic.

In Your Wellness Era?

Here, yoga retreats, detox diets and spiritual awakenings reign supreme. 37% of Aussies are currently in their ‘wellness’ era, with Gen Z making up the bulk of those embracing their physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing. Bali feels like the natural spot to consider, but Fiji and Hawaii make for equally wellness-focused destinations.

In Your ‘On Trend’ Era?

Japan, Japan, Japan. The country makes up three of our five top 10 trending destinations for the next 12 months, with Osaka, Tokyo and Sapporo seeing at least 3 times more search increases compared to 2022. If you want to be ‘in the know’ and experience amazing sushi and stunning cherry blossom trees, you know where to go!

Now that you know what destination could be right for you, you can grab a great deal there with our cheapest prices to our top trending hotspots.

Here are our three essential hacks for booking travel in the next 12 months:

  1. Flexibility is key. The most affordable day to travel both internationally and domestically in the next year is likely on a Monday, with Thursdays the most expensive on average for interstate flights and Fridays the most expensive on average for overseas flights.**
  2. Plan early. Giving yourself time to plan lets you explore flight prices instead of being forced to pay high prices last minute. The Best Time to Travel tool from KAYAK predicts future flight prices to help you determine optimal travel dates and when to book.
  3. Research, research, research. Make sure to check out airports nearby your ideal destination as you might be able to snag a better deal. For example, if you’re planning to visit Italy in the next year, check to see if flying into Milan instead of Rome could save you money.

No matter what era you’re about to enter, there is only one relief for the relentlessly itchy feet we are all feeling. It’s time to embrace your main character energy, pack your backs and book that flight.
