preloadHow to survive a long haul flight

Long haul travel can be tough. There’s the jet lag, the unpredictable neighbours and of course, the boredom. But if you think ahead, there are some things you can do to make it much easier, and in some cases enjoyable. Here’s how to avoid lengthy flights becoming a pain in the neck.

Here’s how you can survive a long haul flight

1.  Book an aisle seat

When booking your flights, make sure to lock in an aisle seat so you can come and go as you please. Long-haul flights mean that even if you usually avoid public bathrooms at all costs, you will inevitably have to get up to go at least once or twice. This is even trickier when you need to brave waking up two sleeping neighbours to make it out to the aisle.

2.  Distract yourself

You’ll want to have a solid book to read, a laptop to watch movies on, or even some quality mobile games on your phone. It’s always good to have a back-up in case you’re not that keen on the in-house movies.

3.  Don’t bring too much carry on

Many travellers consider themselves quite thrifty when it comes to avoiding baggage fees, and make up for it by stocking up their carry on. On a long-haul flight this could mean the end of comfort for you. If you have to store that extra baggage under the seat in front of you, say goodbye to any hope of sleep, and hello to a dead leg.

4.  Gear up for that long haul flight!

Have you ever seen those guys at the airport wearing a neck pillow before the flight? You’ve seen them plugging in earplugs and eye masks before the plane has even taken off, and you think how silly it all looks? Well think again, because those guys have it sorted. While your public image may suffer at the hands of a plane full of strangers, your body and brain with thank you for every second of comfort.

5.  Give your body-clock a head start

As much as you think a long-haul flight is a good way to catch up on sleep, it’s just not. Anticipating the flight and catching some zz’s before you go will make a world of difference in the long run. If your flight is at 10pm, get some afternoon shut-eye before you go.
