preloadTravel addicts survey

If you’ve ever caught yourself looking out the office window, wishing the afternoon might go a little quicker, and allowed your mind to wander, you may have started wondering where you might rather be than at work. Did you let yourself dream a little? Open up your browser and type in some far-off destination, just to check how cheap the flights are? Have you ever actually bought one of these flights? If you’ve said yes, don’t worry, you’re not alone. New research by KAYAK.com.au reveals exactly how many of us have succumbed to the urge to book travel from work, as well as much more.

The research, compiled in the 2017 ‘Travel Addicts’ Survey, show we’re a nation of travel daydreamers, with up to one in three Aussies booking their holidays online whilst on the job – higher than any other Asia Pacific market. Over half (52%) of potential travellers check flight and hotel prices every day and 28% review upwards of five different travel sites on average, to ensure they bag a good deal.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you were the only person checking prices from the train, from the office or even from the loo, have a gander down below.

How do Aussies book a trip?

Beyond booking trips online at work, many of us have already started to book our next trip before the current one has come to an end; with 28% of Aussies booking while they’re still on the road. A further 28% use their downtime before bed to book their next holiday destination on a mobile device. When it comes to selecting suitable flights, a whopping 40% of Australians book a red eye or night flight, to maximise the actual leisure time during their annual leave.

What makes a good holiday?

When considering what the most important elements of travel are, Aussies rate money (61%), a safe environment (41%), a travel partner (31%) and good weather (28%) as their top requirements, taking precedence over inspiring cultural attractions (24%) and good food (18%).

Social media when travelling

Despite only 14% of Australians ranking access to a mobile phone and internet as an important part of their travel experience, many incorporate social media into their journeys, posting on average 7 times during a trip.  Over half (53%) check social media daily whilst travelling.

What about you? Do you also have some of these travel-addictive behaviours? Our hint for you is – don’t waste your time constantly checking travel prices and reviewing a thousand sites looking for the best deal. Let us do the hard part, by setting up a few KAYAK Price Alerts. We’ll let you know when the price drops as well as if we think it’ll rise again.  And once you’ve got your trip planned out, keep all the bookings organised in Trips, so you’ll never miss a date again.  That way, you can embrace the fun part of travelling, and let us handle the boring bits. Plan smart, manage well, and travel worry-free – with KAYAK.

Note: The ‘Travel Addicts’ survey was carried out 2 – 11 October 2017 and surveyed 2,100 respondents across 7 APAC markets, including (in alphabetical order) Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, aged between 21 and 45, who have booked hotels or flights online in the last 6 months and have been on holiday.
