The summer months are approaching and Aussies are already planning island getaways. Lucky for us, a bevvy of beautiful islands are only a short flight away. Our resident nerds have delved into our flight search data and discovered that Aussies are shunning traditional island hot spots such as Thailand and Bali this year and are instead flying to islands less travelled. Here are some of our top picks from the trending, alternative island getaways out there.
Malay, The Philippines
Malay (on the Phillippine island of Panay) has claimed the crown for the trendiest island destination, with a 66% increase in flight searches from 2015. Malay has a range of natural wonders from white sandy beaches, bamboo forests, and hidden caves, to the hinterland’s beautiful waterfalls. But its main drawcard is that it’s the entry point to Boracay Island. Boracay is famous for its pristine blue waters and luxury resorts, offering visitors a boat load of activities, from snorkelling and scuba diving to world-class nightlife. A must do in Boracay is to visit ‘the finest beach in the world’ at White Beach, situated in the north-west region of the island.
Balikpapan, Borneo
Balikpapan is on the doorstep of a unique natural environment, so it’s no surprise that it’s seen the second biggest increase (60%) in flight searches in 2016. Situated on the east coast of Borneo, Balikpapan’s white sandy beaches are offset by lush rainforest, providing the perfect tropical island backdrop. Ideal for the adventurous traveller, this city is a great base for exploring the surrounding jungle terrain; inhabited by the incredible Orangutan or the ‘Old Man of the Forest’ and over 2,000 species of wild orchid. For those planning to travel with family, Balikpapan has the adventurous Caribbean Island Waterpark – great for the little ones to enjoy.
Puerto Princesa, The Philippines
Located on Palawan Island, just a short distance from Malay, Puerto Princesa is said to be one of the greenest cities in the Philippines. Its surrounds are home to tropical sanctuaries full of natural wildlife, as well as a multitude of secluded, pristine beaches such as Marufinas, Nagtabon and Napsa. The secret’s out about this island paradise; Aussie flight searches to this beautiful destination have increased by 50% compared to last year.
Apia, Samoa
Inspired by the recent Survivor Australia series, flight searches to the Samoan Islands have jumped by 22% this year. Though you’re far more likely to find relaxation than mere survival in this Pacific paradise. Samoa offers you both the opportunity to lie on white sand beaches at the edge of azure waters or to get into the thick of it and discover cascading waterfalls hidden within island rainforests. It’s also easy to catch a glimpse of village life during your stay and we suggest taking in some of Samoa’s time-honoured traditions, such as a Fiafia Night. This celebration involves spending an evening feasting and enjoying stories told through dance. Hopefully you’ll not only leave Samoa with a feeling of relaxation, but also and a sense of the Samoan way of life, Fa’a Samoa.
Noumea, New Caledonia
Picturesque New Caledonia continues to entice Australian travellers, with a 19% increase in flight searches from last year. The capital city, Noumea, provides travellers with a wealth of culture, spectacular sandy beaches and a variety of local delicacies – all with a French touch. Whether you want to lounge by the pool, enjoy a cocktail or two, or try water sports such as windsurfing or kitesurfing, Noumea: oh yeah.
Nuku’alofa, Tonga
Nuku’alofa is the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga and is an ideal destination for Aussie travellers who are ready to explore. With a great number of protected lagoons and nearby deserted islands, sea kayaking is a great way to discover the natural beauty and wildlife. If you can’t make it to Tonga this summer, bear in mind that these islands are also a winter haven for humpback whales. The best time to view the whales is from June to October, so mark your travel calendars and take the opportunity to watch or dive with these graceful goliaths of the deep.
