Lake Bled, Slovenia
Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense European forests, Lake Bled looks like something out of a Disney film. In winter, the snow touches almost everything the eye can see including the famous tear-shaped island hosting Bled Castle, a medieval fortress dating back to the 11th century. If you’re not already convinced of its snow globe qualities, Lake Bled has also been nominated as one of the new 7 Natural Wonders of the World.
Banff, Canada
Banff is the highest town in Canada and is part of the world’s third-oldest national park. Its winter wonderland-like features, which include snow-capped mountains, pine forests, hot springs, glaciers and alpine meadows, have earned Banff the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s not unusual to catch elk roaming through the streets, which are lit with 19th-century lanterns and lined with log cabin-style bars and restaurants. Known as one of the best towns to stay for the nearby world-renowned ski resorts including Sunshine Village and Lake Louise, Banff is as close as it gets to a snow globe town lookalike.
Salzburg, Austria
Salzburg provided the backdrop for the Sound of Music, its and once you visit and see its picturesque beauty for yourself, you’ll understand why. The city is split in two by the majestic Salzach River, which divides the old world and the new. Central Europe’s largest fully-preserved castle looms above the city, providing a vantage point for unbeatable views of winding streets leading to stunning Romanesque and Gothic churches that are scattered across the city. This maze of historical sites and Baroque architecture is broken up by Christmas markets that supply endless cookies, gingerbread and Glühwein.
Rovaniemi, Finland
As the official hometown of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi is a wintry playground for children and adults alike. Littered with an array of structures constructed from snow and ice, such as hotels, igloos, bars and castles, it will be hard to remember what a normal city looks like after visiting this pocket of northern Europe. Rovaniemi is also a great place to see the Northern Lights – if you’re lucky enough, you’ll spot them while enjoying a river cruise, riding on a reindeer-pulled sled, or taking a husky tour.
Megeve, France
Not only is Megève a top-rated European ski resort, it’s a charming medieval village with incredible views of the famous Mont Blanc. Visiting Megève is like travelling back in time as you wander through cobbled streets with horse-drawn carriages passing by. Its low altitude means the slopes are prettily wooded with great cross-country trails. All après ski activities are an easy stroll away, including restaurants, bars, boutiques, an open-air ice rink and Megève’s very own casino.
