The Catacombs, France

Paris, the city of love, hides a scary labyrinth situated twenty metres below the ground with ossuaries that hold the remains of more than six million people. When Parisian cemeteries became overpopulated in the 18th century, the city’s former limestone mines were deemed viable burial sites – as well as saving space they helped eliminate the stench of decomposing flesh. Today, the corridors are lined with thousands of skulls and bones with many, many more hiding beneath the surface.

If you’re planning to go to Mexico and are on the hunt for an insanely scary experience, look no further than the Island of the Dolls, a floating garden covered with hundreds of creepy dolls oddly hanging from trees. Legend has it that in 1950 a local farmer named Don Julián Santana discovered the body of a little girl who had drowned in the canals, after which her spirit immediately began haunting the place. Terrified, Don Julián began hanging dolls around the island to protect himself from her ghost. Check out the spine-tingling sight for yourself by taking a two-hour canal ride from Mexico City.

Decades ago, a train derailed south of Whistler leaving seven train cars scattered near the Cheakamus River. Years later, this wreckage in the middle of the woods lures curious types from all over the globe. These days the carriages are coated in layers of graffiti, attracting travellers hoping to get the perfect shot in the morning frost. Venture to the abandoned rusty wagons via a one to two hour hike. If it’s too spooky for your fragile soul, check out the scenic views of the nearby Cheakakmus River to lift your spirits.

Whale Bone Alley, Siberia

Move over Stonehenge, Siberia’s Whale Bone Alley in the pristine wilds of Yttygran Island couldn’t be more mysterious. Enormous ancient whale bones jut out of the ground forming a path that stretches as far as the eye can see. If the bones aren’t creepy enough, the fact that archaeologists and scientists still aren’t sure who built this chilling structure, or why, surely is. This expedition is bound to be a ‘pinch me’ moment but we recommend booking a tour to take you to this remote area worry free. The best option is to start your journey in Moscow and catch a domestic flight to Anadyr.
