Top tips for finding a cheap flight from New York to Sydney

  • New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is a hub for Delta and American Airlines. JetBlue also uses JFK as a primary operating base.
  • If you’d like to enjoy extra legroom, wider seats, priority boarding and other airline-specific perks, consider upgrading to premium economy. Airlines like Delta, ANA, American Airlines and United all offer premium economy fares on flights from New York to Sydney.
  • You have three airports to choose from for your travel to Sydney—either the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the LaGuardia Airport (LGA), or the Newark International Airport (EWR). Most flight deals operate out of the first two.
  • JFK is the largest of the airports and has a wider range of flight options. Furthermore, if you plan to travel by public transportation to the airport, it is better connected to the city center by subway lines A, E, and the AirTrain. Because it has the greatest variety of international flights, it is also one of the most crowded airports.
  • If you are trying to avoid crowds, do not plan to get to the airport during peak times. Traffic builds up on the city’s bridges and tunnels during rush hour, so be sure to leave plenty of time to get to the airport. Newark Airport can be reached by public transportation, although it requires various transfers. If you would prefer to get there via taxi, then EWR might be an even better option for you.
  • Sydney offers a wide range of services to get your trip off to the right start. There is free Wi-Fi across all terminals, a medical center (level 3 of Terminal 1), prayer rooms (level 3 of Terminal 1), a wide variety of airline lounges in all three airport terminals, currency exchange offices in all three airport terminals, and showers (near gates 31, 51 and 24).
  • Upon arrival to Sydney, you will be required to pass through the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service where you will need to show your passport, visa, and an incoming passenger card, which you should receive during your flight. Bear in mind that it is not permitted to record or photograph in these areas, and this is strictly enforced at the Sydney Airport.
  • Please also be sure to check the list of prohibited items before traveling. Certain foods, plant materials, and animal products are all prohibited and hefty fines will be enforced if these items are detected in your luggage upon passing through customs. Play it safe and be sure to declare anything you bring.
  • Shower facilities are plenty at JFK Airport in the following lounges: Wingtips Lounge in T4, American Airlines Admiral Club in T2, and Delta Club Lounge in T2 and T4. Facials, pedicures, manicures, and massages are also available at BeRelax and XpresSpa in T5 and T1, near Gates 3 and 6.
  • There are no direct, non-stop flights from Newark Airport (EWR) to Sydney Kingsford Airport (SYD). However, multiple airlines, including United Airlines, operate at least a one-stop flight from Newark Airport and New York John F Kennedy Airport (JFK) to SYD Airport.
  • Several lounges, including the Plaza Premium Lounge near Gate 24 and the Air New Zealand Lounge in Terminal 1, towards Gate 63, are available at Sydney Airport. All these lounges are open to all passengers, including arriving passengers, through lounge membership programs, a lounge pass, or by paying at the door. Lounge pass rates are around A$ 40. Services available at these lounges include shower facilities, free Wi-Fi access, flight monitoring information, TVs, rest areas, and food and beverages.
  • Newark Airport has a designated relief area, where you can take a pet for a potty break ahead of a flight. The Pet Relief Area is located just outside Terminal A, on the west side of the terminal. In Terminal B, the Pet Relief Area is on the south side of the terminal near Gate 57 B3 and Gate 65.

Short flight so no entertainment, turbulence so no food service - overall flight as expected

All was good, the only thing was it didn't run on time.

Great meal. Best seats ever! They need to teach other airlines how to do that.

Overall excellent but the Captain kept the seat belt sign on for far too long, especially at the beginning and end of the flight. It was 2 hours after take-off before the crew were able to start the service (on an 11 hour night flight, reducing our sleeping time) and the seat belt sign on went on during breakfast (90 mins before landing) and was not turned off again until we landed. This made for an uncomfortable journey of trying to limit fluid intake because it was unclear when the toilets would be available for use.

Crew were pleasant, happy to be there and were a joy to be around. Entire operation was professional, well thought out and ran like a Swiss clock.

Good food and entertainment options. Great Staff that were all welcoming and caregiving.

The recline on the seat in front of me came back so that I was staring at the top of the man’s head in front of me the whole trip. He refused to bring his seat back up twice every time he was instructed to do so and only relented when he had a tray of good in front of him. And then right back in my lap!!! Horrible man!! I complained to the staff multiple times, but no one would address the issue. Otherwise, it would have been a perfect flight.

There was a snafu with confirming seats at check which left us in limbo for the second leg of our trip. I believe the ANZ app is not well integrated with the systems at the terminal resulting in this disconcerting error.

Carring crew, nice ambiance of the cabin, comfortable beds, good food well served. We liked everything.

The pilot tried to make up for lost time due to delays that were out of her control. She communicated the issues openly and clearly and made every effort to do what she could to alleviate issues.

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

Everything went well with the flight. But one of the flight attendants had on inappropriate pants. She had on an old worn out pair of sweat pants. The back seam was unrivaled and should not have been worn for work. If I had not seen her in the airport with the standard type of luggage, I certainly would not have thought she was working for Delta. Not a good look at all for representation.

Great!! I haven’t had a bad experience with them.

The plane was one hour late cause they were doing some reparations with us on the plane no mention I was in the first seat and the door was open the entire time with 8 degrees! The plane was totally dirty no mention old ! The staff was nice but no put together, the attention to details and passenger experience is missing and i always travel first !!! Is better the lounge than the plane! KLM/air France every details is taken care maybe you need a creative creator or experience client need asap was terrible and not memorable for the price that I payed very dissatisfied

The international flight from Sydney to Dallas had great food. I have travelled a lot over the years and this has been the most memorable in my experience so far.

flight delayed, wait in crowded gate. staff inattentive. had to remind them to get my coat from their closet. not many new movies, media choices were limited (nothing compared to Emirates.) Lounge was crowded

flight delayed, wait in crowded gate. staff inattentive. had to remind them to get my coat from their closet. not many new movies, media choices were limited (nothing compared to Emirates.)

Initial flight was cancelled so moved to an alternative flight. As a result, stuck in a middle seat. Flight then place in holding pattern prior to landing resulting in a very late trip home.

There was nothing I didn’t like, prices a little lower would help

Flight delay was informed at the last minute. Food quality is not up to Qantas standard I was unable to book an online boarding pass on any of my 6 flights.

Rescheduled after ticket purchased and issued, not 2 or 3 times and not a fourth but by 5 times, by Qantas, that's right, 5 changes! Forcing an overnight stay in Chile and need for visa. Qantas can no longer provide basic services as a national or international service provider. Professionalism is extinct and the provider needs to be mentored and educated in perfecting who to operate as an airline. Qantas is the spirit of Australian dissatisfaction.

Amazing! Was put on the earlier flight and I requested for an aisle seat and was given it. Thanks Qantas!

The crew were amazing - A great job. They made me feel special and valued.

Boarding was terrible - the ground staff member Fredeya at lax was more military than customer service, have never encountered a customer service representative as rude as her. Apart from that all other staff were wonderful and the flight was good.

Flight was delayed 2.5 hours - a big deal on an overnight when you plan to sleep.

I feel like they have upgraded the app since I last flew United and I found it to be super helpful. I had stopped flying United unless absolutely necessary and my experience on this trip indicates they have been working hard to improve their services.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

The flight was canceled. Got rebooked to Chicago and when we arrived our luggage where to there. They were going to our original destination the day after. They would not deliver them to our house. We had to go pick them up.

EWR terminal C United Club is great. Flight and everything else mediocre

737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.

Very bad , airplain had problem with engines , had to evacuate, had a delay on my trip for almost 4 hours , lost my rental car in london..

Other than the two hour delay, it was fine. Of course they were very professional and kept us informed throughout the whole delay..

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

The flight was very uncomfortable and there was no snacks served for the 13 hours international flight. In addition, the flight was delayed 3 hours

Terrible experience! All flights delayed, staff had no idea of what they were doing, and at the end luggage lost for 2 days!

It was great, love the experience and will definitely recommend 👌. Communication was great

The flight got canceled multiple times and we had to drive their to reach midnight for our next morning interview. Poor and unriable experience. Now have to ask for a refund since we didn't need their rescheduled flight three days later.

In flight wifi that I paid for was very slow and at times didn't work at all.

No food, not even snacks on the 6hr flight from Newark to Vancouver! The movie collection made up for it though and they did come around with drinks twice. Just good to know so you can eat ahead/bring snacks onto the flight. It was a bumpy ride induced by wind and rain but otherwise got to the destination safely and promptly.

Announcements were to loud, too insistent and too often. The same messages can be made in a nice relaxed, yet efficient manner. There is no need to "talk down" as if on a mild power trip. It's immature and unnecessary. This is a constant irritant especially with Air Canada. Learn from your European competitors to have a bit of class.

My flight was cancelled. The flight they booked me on was delayed over 2 hours with mechanical problems so I missed my connection and they ran out of hotel rooms, so I had to book and pay for it on my own. I also had to pay for food out of pocket. It was a terrible experience.

Date was for a day earlier than I realized and no email or text up on check in. At least I could have made an effort to re-arrange my schedule to use the flight. 100% write off + cost of new ticket.

The agents lied and said flight was completely full, (wasn’t even have full) then proceeded to take everyone’s roller bags even though there was plenty room to accommodate them on the flight.
