1) Volcano surfing in Leon, Nicaragua

Volcano boarding down the black lava of Cerro Negro, just outside Leon, is unlike anything else. The action-packed experience begins with a challenging one hour hike to the top of the volcano. Before you hit the ash fields, take some time to observe the majestic smouldering craters and surrounding countryside. Then, fully equipped in your jumpsuit, goggles and board, hop on your volcano board and descend to the base at blood-rushing speeds! Our tip? Make sure you choose a reputable tour company such as Marvelus Travel, that provides quality gear and a bilingual guide to make the most out of this unique experience.

2) Sandboarding in Ica, Peru

Known for its golden desert, Ica is home to Duna Grande – the largest sand dune in the world. Nearly two kilometres in height, travellers can head out to these amazing dunes with one of the many sandboarding and dune buggy tours. Sandboarding (and even skiing) down the huge golden dunes is an exhilarating experience as you reach high speeds and witness jaw-dropping desert scenery. Another option is to whizz through the “Everest of the Desert” in a sand buggy. While you’re there, be sure to also visit Huacachina – a desert oasis town where you’ll find plenty of accommodation options and buzzing nightlife.

3) Snow surfing in Niseko, Japan

Head to Japan’s number one snow resort, Niseko United, for outstanding snow surfing (similar to snowboarding but with slightly different shaped boards and technique) in insanely soft, abundant and quality powder. Averaging around 15 metres of snow or more each season, Niseko is famous for its wide open powder bowls and tree runs. Ride through the four resorts – Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and An’nupuri – and head out to Niseko’s town, known to have the best nightlife in Japan. Other great Japanese snowboarding resorts include Rusutsu, Furano, Moiwa and Hakuba. Ski season in Japan is from December to March.

4) Mountain boarding in England

Planning a trip to Europe soon? Test your skateboarding/surfing skills by trying mountain boarding in England at one of the many venues,  such as The Edge in Shropshire, Another World in West Yorkshire and Hales Superbole in Cheshire. Originally started as a way to snowboard all year round, mountain boarding has developed into a fully fledged sport of its own and is the perfect option for snowboard lovers who don’t have the budget for lift passes. Most people find it easy to learn how to mountain board but make sure you wear protective equipment, just in case!
