FAQs - booking Japan flights

  • Which airport should I choose to visit Tokyo?

As the capital and the largest city in Japan, Tokyo is the country’s international gateway. Tokyo has two international airports, Haneda and Narita. Haneda Airport (HND) is smaller, located just outside of downtown Tokyo, whereas the larger Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km outside the city. Whilst the Narita Airport is the biggest in the city and receives the most flights and often has the cheapest options of flights, passengers flying into this airport must consider a journey of around 1h 30min by train to get to and from the airport. Costs of train tickets, as well as possible taxi fares, are also exponentially higher. However, the Haneda airport, despite being smaller, is still a modern and busy airport and transport from the city takes roughly 40min, making it a desirable choice for those with early morning or late-night flights.

  • Do I need a visa to go to Japan?

Australian passport holders do not need a visa to visit Japan. You can visit visa free when travelling for tourism or business for up to 90 days. Nevertheless, your passport must be valid for your entire stay.

  • Which airport should I choose to visit Kyoto?

While the city of Kyoto does not have its own airport, it is still very easily accessible thanks to the Japanese Rail System. Many visiting Kyoto will fly into Narita Airport (NRT) and from there catch a 3h train to Kyoto. If you don’t like the prospect of a longer trip by train, you can choose to fly into Osaka International Airport (ITM), known as the Itami Airport, which is located 36 km and 1h away by train, or the Kansai International Airport (KIX), located 77 km or 1h 30min away by train. Despite the name, the Osaka International Airport handles only domestic flights, whereas the Kansai International Airport is the nearest hub for international flights.

  • Where do I fly into Japan to visit Disneyland?

Japan’s Disneyland is in Tokyo, in the district of Urayasu, directly across the bay from Haneda Airport. Haneda Airport offers direct shuttles to the Tokyo Disneysea Station where you can catch the Disney Resort Line to key points and entrances around the park. Alternatively, Tokyo’s major airport, Narita, is about 1h from the park, where you can also catch direct shuttle buses.

  • Do children have to use child car seats to travel from the airport in Japan?

Whether you’re catching a taxi or hiring a car, you'll need to abide by Japan’s child car seat laws. Children up to the age of six must use a child car seat appropriate for their age and size. Most airlines allow parents to bring child car seats for free, but you’ll need to double-check this with your carrier and let them know how many car seats you intend to bring.

  • Which airport should I fly into to visit Miyajima?

If you’re keen to meet the deer population and see Miyajima’s famous Torii gate, your most convenient airport will be Hiroshima (HIJ). While there aren’t any direct flights from Sydney to Hiroshima, you should find plenty of single-stop itineraries featuring short stopovers at airports like Taoyuan Airport (TPE) and Tokyo Haneda (HND).

  • Which airport is convenient for visiting Jigokudani Monkey Park?

If you’re keen to see macaques bathing in the hot springs of Jigokudani Monkey Park, a convenient airport is Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport (MMJ). From there, you can hire a vehicle or take a bus or train to Nagano and then on to the monkey park. Though it is further afield, some travellers prefer to fly into Tokyo and then catch the Shinkansen to Nagano Station.

  • Which airport is close to Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan?

If you’re heading to the oldest hotel in the world, convenient airports are Shinshu-Matsumoto and Shizuoka Airport (FSZ). These hubs are ideal if you intend to hire a car. If you’d rather use Japan’s famous rail system, it may be more convenient to fly into one of Tokyo’s airports.

I have never been a big fan of airplane meals

We purchased premium economy seats 9 months ago and got bumped to economy when we tried to board the plane. It was a huge fiasco while they struggled to find us seats. I tried reaching out to Kayak to see how we can get refunded for the extra money we spent on premium but have heard nothing back. It was a 14 hour flight and were disappointed that we lost our seats after selecting them 9 months ago.

Flight was overall OK: lovely staff and smooth travelling. The only downside was no food was available on a 3.5 hour flight over lunchtime. Luckily we had realised this in advance and brought our own bento.

The whole flight in Economy was great, the crew were just amazing and the food was great as well

Crew went out of their way for me, not often

Lots of legroom for a small flight. There was in flight entertainment even though it is a short duration. We waited on one passenger to board for a long time after everyone else was on.

At Fukuoka, check in counter stuff was no experience , took long time and took out our preserved sheets to change to emergency exit seats without asking. The flight was late and we missed the flight to go back to SF. My luggage was broken. I had a terrible experience.

Chair was broken. Crew was awesome. Food was eh. Dinner food not so good the sandwich was good ( for airplane food) headphones hurt my ears. It’s hard because no one has plug in earphones

Fast boarding. Cabin temperature was a bit warm, but I guess this is the standard in ANA. The Room seats are spacious, but not long enough for me.

Overall, very good. The food was better than expected with the exception of the pork and potatoes dinner at the end of the flight. My family all selected that dish and did not set it. I tried a bite also and it was honestly terrible. Also, it would be helpful to know when the snacks in the back of the plane are available.

Crews were very caring and polite. Washroom was surprisingly clean. Overall experience was good , only food choices was very limited. Thanks

On time boarding I would like to see ground hostess to help transit customers to direct them to the right terminal and boarding gate. Last night, all the transit customers on SQ484 arriving Singapore had to merry go round to look for terminal and boarding gate to board SQ128 transit to KL Malaysia. We went to Terminal 3 taking the Skytrain to T3 and back to T3 to get out to look for different Skytrain to T2. On arrival t2, we had to go round to ask which boarding gate to KL. We only had 5 minutes to make to the boarding time at 6:55pm but we already spent more than 30 minutes running around to find the boarding gate. We were late at the boarding gate.

The seats were more narrow than at other lines. Food was mediocre (economy class)

The crew have great customer service but their economy seating isn’t the most comfortable for a 220lbs+ guy and the food wasn’t bad, but wasn’t exceptional, either.

The crew and their service was top notch, but the plane itself seemed to be on the older side and worn out. Also, the food could’ve been better. 9 out of 10.

My groups frequent flyer star allianceUnited airline miles was not accepted. The Singapore premium economy bag had to be requested, it was very lacking- no toothbrush. I paid more than double than economy but could only use the bathrooms sharing with economy which was hardly available and had to wait in line. Is the 2X $ worth it just for a larger seat???? It is questionable. Seats were not that comfortable. My husband’s seat had white stains on it- had to wipe it down. Our headphones did not have covers on it. Food- way too much.

Fantastic patience when one of the passengers behind me was an absolute horrible, horrible person and the girls just kept smiling and doing their job with patience and kindness. Well, done to the crew.

It was a middle of the night changeover, so we were all ready for sleep. Staff were helpful and managed a few hours sleep. Food options were good.

Could not really fault anything. We had a really short time between flights (about 45 mins), and had to get across the other side of the terminal. But we made it and crew were helpful. Food was good and service for the kids was great.

Good communication regarding any updates time of flight and flight delayed. The fight was delayed by two and half hours at eleventh hour. That was unexpected, especially when you international passenger.

The service was excellent. The quarters were a little cramped in Economy, and we had to exist there for 18 hours.

It was very nice. I will try to fly with Qantas whenever I can.

Terrible. 6 hour delay with no explanations and only 15 dollars in food credits. A disaster. I'll just leave it at that.

We paid for business class seats for the comfort that comes with that but couldn’t use the bathroom as it was full all the time.

Flight was cancelled about 1.5 hours before departure. Replacement flight provided scheduled 1 hour later. Late boarding, late departure and arrived Melbourne nearly 2 hours after originally scheduled.

Flight is overpriced. Quality of service is poor. Constant delays. This flight again was multiple times delayed. The relaxed and careless attitude of staff is appalling. People are busy and it does matter if we do things more efficiently than chilled out. Once the flight was ready to depart we had more delays due to the careless approach of boarding passengers. Food is highly processed with limited options and super unhealthy. Leg room is shockingly bad. Even the biz class is pretty bad. Coupled with the horrendous prices Qantas only benefits given Australia is their home market. Otherwise they are not competitive at all.

The flight was good, long obviously but smooth. The seats are pretty small, definitely notice a difference for long haul compared to Emirates or Cathay Pacific it’s more like medium haul seating for space. Food options were good, children’s meals were good for my fussy 3yo.

Top notch service, good selection of snack and meal options, generous accommodation for luggage, and great selection of in cabin entertainment. I really appreciate the offering of pillows, blankets, sleep mask, tb&paste, and earplugs. The only complaint I can make was that my seat was horribly uncomfortable and lacked cushion.

An extremely long flight packed in like sardines. But they feed you often with meals, drinks and snacks. They have a lot of movies and audio books

Food was hood for airline food with good poftion and variety in meals. Frequency of beverage service was very low and amount of soda with meals was inadequate.

Cathay has a great reputation, though it's baseline economy seating is nothing to write home about (and SE Asia flight passengers sometime lack 'routine stateside' etiquette). On the other hand, food was great, flight attendants were nice, and price was very good~

I was really impressed with the experience it was my first trip overseas. Nice staff

Not enough food for everyone. . Always run out of food when we ask

I was amazed at how clean Cathay Pacific planes were compared to our US domestic airlines. Everything was great all but the food service I was just okay with. Shorter flights with other airlines usually provided more meals and snacks that I have been on. Almost a 16 hour flight just two meals and no snacks with Cathay Pacific. Even ran out of what I wanted for one of them. Other than that top notch!

It would be nice if they could have a choice of both gluten AND dairy free menu. Lots of people have problems with BOTH. I also could not get on their website to check. Phone verification issues etc( not all of us have our phones on roaming. I tried over an hour!

Not good. Small seats. Not enough food that customers wanted. No special requests were given that i could see. Slow response from flight attendants

Bathroom was not cleaned as often as other airlines does. It was gross for a less than full flight capacity.

Rarely saw a flight attendant. Never received what I wanted from drink service. Twice I was told they would return with my order. I never saw the flight attendant again. I has requested a Moslem meal. I did not receive. It

From BOS to HK, the crew had pushed me to choose the pasta for meal multiple times. It was a bad experience. Without this, everything was good.

The crew were great. The seat was older than an old Holden with a big metal bar sticking right into my back. The passenger next to me complained that hers was the same. The pre purchase system for food was disappointing as the pie/quiche took 20 mins to warm up, arrived too hot and with no utensils. It was one of the most uncomfortable flights I've ever been on.

Not very good, no food and not drink ( caffe or tea). Never ever fly with jet star.

Fabulous I have no issues with JetStar great service always use them to fly

Flight was as expected - we got what we paid for which was a base fare

Unaware of charge for carry on until i got to gate

I got what I paid for - flight was clean, staff were friendly

I like that fare is cheap but because there's no amenities whatsoever. You get what you paid for.

There's a reason why fare is cheap, no amenities.

It is what it is - nothing more, nothing less. No entertainment onboard but one kinda knows that when buying a ticket on a no frills airline. I choose Jetstar only because of price.

Plane was delayed both on arrival to Sydney and departure. We boarded the plane while it was in the process of being refuelled, which I am certain is against CASA regulations. Comfort for anyone over 6 foot is non existent.
