Although foreigners are allowed to drive in Saudi in line with the government's announcement 2 years ago, the only drawback is that it can only be done at the airport without the need for Saudi ID or iqama (have your passport, driver's license and IDL with you). All the car rental shops require iqama, which is not friendly for foreigners who are here on short-term (i.e. 2 months or less). I hope that the requirements to rent a car for foreigners can be uniformed throughout to ensure it can be a more tourist-friendly destination in line with the reforms that is being done by the government.
