In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, and continues to have some of the most progressive LGBTQ+ rights of anywhere in the world. Travellers should be made to feel welcome wherever they go, but if you’re looking to party, the gay scene in Amsterdam is one of the best in Europe.
Sweden has a reputation of being one of the most open-minded and welcoming countries in the world, where diversity and inclusion are at the very heart of progressive Scandi culture. The capital of Stockholm is where you’ll find Scandinavia’s biggest Pride event, with a picturesque backdrop to boot.
According to the ILGA advocacy group’s Rainbow Index, Malta is the most gay-friendly country on earth. While it might not have the biggest gay scene, it is home to some of Europe’s oldest archeological sites, making it a great spot if you’re keen to soak up some history.
Like the others in this list, Portugal offers some of the best LGBTQ+ rights globally. Lisbon is the go-to spot for food and nightlife, and while you’re there, take a day trip up to Sintra – a magical city in lush rolling hills dotted with pastel palaces and cobbled streets.
Belgium was the second country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, and is frequently referred to as one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world. There are LGBTQ+ bars dotted throughout Belgium’s cities, but the hub of the country’s gay community can be found in the Saint Jacques neighbourhood of Brussels.
If you’re looking for a party, most UK cities have a thriving gay scene, but there are also rural areas and countryside retreats with LGBTQ+ communities too. Brighton is regarded as the UK’s unofficial “gay capital”, while Hebden Bridge – a bucolic and quirky town with a population of under 5,000 – is known as the “lesbian capital”.
While Barcelona and Madrid are exciting hubs for gay life in Spain, smaller towns cater for the LGBTQ+ community throughout the country. The charming coastal town of Sitges is a short train ride from Barcelona, where the gay scene takes centre stage – it’s a place to party, but also to wind down and relax on beautiful beaches, and soak up local history.
LGBTQ+ outdoor lovers will adore Norway. Like neighbouring Sweden, this Scandi destination is home to some of the world’s oldest anti-discrimination laws for the LGBTQ+ community. You’ll find the most nightlife in the capital, Oslo, and if you’re looking for outdoor adventure, throw a dart into a map of Norway and you’ll be sure to find it anywhere!
The second biggest country in the world has a big history of fighting for human rights – including LGBTQ+ rights. If you’re seeking adventures, head West and explore the Rockies where you’ll find some of the world’s best hiking, biking and more. If you’re looking for culture and history, visit Montreal, and don’t forget to stop off in Toronto – home to not one, but two gay villages.
If you’re looking for an LGBTQ-friendly holiday closer to home, you’re in luck. Though Australia only legalised gay marriage in 2017, the country has long been a welcoming place for the queer community. Sydney is the LGBTQ+ centre with a reputation for inclusivity, excellent nightlife, and one of the world’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, Mardi Gras. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for Sydney WorldPride in February 2023!
