There are endless reasons why we choose to travel. For most of us, though, a trip abroad is a welcome escape from everyday life, a chance to put business meetings, hectic schedules and daily stress aside. Thankfully, there are plenty of detox-friendly destinations that encourage rest and relaxation, that will have you switching off in no time. From the soothing sound of the ocean to the ancient resonance of Buddhist temples, these far off lands will calm even the most restless of souls.

Experience the colours and aromas of India

Chaotic and inspiring, India is a world of perpetual discovery; it would take a lifetime to truly experience it all. A good place to start your spiritual journey is the country’s heart, Delhi. This pulsing city is known for being a hub of bazaars; visit one and kick-start your senses by breathing the heady aroma of spices and feasting your eyes on the  multi-coloured silks.

Slow things down a little with a safari through the Thar Desert with its rolling dunes which stretch on for miles, or let yourself get lost in the colourful towns of Rahjastan: gold Jaisalmer, blue Jodhpur, and pink Jaipur.

For a holistic experience, round out your travels by heading to Varanasi, one of India’s holy cities, and climb to one of the hilltop temples at sunrise. Centre yourself again by taking a boat cruise; observing pilgrims praying and bathing along the ghats of the sacred Ganges River. Namaste.

Embrace the rugged terrain of Nicaragua

Less well known than its neighbour, Costa Rica, Nicaragua is the perfect Central American destination, not just for a sun-and-surf getaway but also for soul-searching. Its wild landscape provides much to explore and for down time, you couldn’t find a more picturesque setting to sit on the beach and gaze out to the rugged cliffs and calm sea.

Nicaragua’s ‘Emerald Coast’ is a secluded and peaceful natural setting, ideal for yoga, meditation, and spa treatments that nourish the soul. Activities like kayaking, hiking one of the many volcanoes, fishing and surfing, will keep you busy from sunrise to sundown but if you somehow still have energy left come nightfall, head to the surfer’s commune of Playa Gigante to meet like-minded people.

Take a deep breath….. and appreciate Bali

Bali is well known for its beaches, buddhas and backpackers. Sure, it’s a very affordable holiday destination, but it also offers a wealth of  spiritual well-being for those in need. Seminyak, with its indulgent retreats, incredible local food, and spa treatments will have you feeling like a new person, but time here would not be well spent without a little adventure beyond the yoga mat.

Lempuyang Temple, also called the Temple of a Thousand Steps, is located at the summit of Belibis Hill and it’s a climb that is well worth the effort, for the view alone. You’ll be in awe of the Tegalalang Rice Terraces, famous for their beautiful scenery and down-to-earth locals, eager to invite you in for a coconut drink.

Flights to Denpasar from A$237** Book The Laguna Resort from A$204*

Let it all go in the ruins of Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a tranquil and laid-back island just across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun, Mexico. Known for its beautiful white sand beaches, turquoise waters and friendly locals, Isla de Mujeres is also a place of mystery and is home to Mayan ruins, thought to be the Temple of Ixchel, an ancient goddess of fertility and healing.

A week here will see you completely unwind, yet never run out of things to do. Rise with the sun and take a daily yoga class, then cool off in the ocean; either with a swim or a snorkel, exploring the beautiful coral reefs and swimming with schools of fish thriving just below the surface. When you feel like drying off, take a trek out to the very tip of the Island to Punta Sur where ancient temple ruins lay in the steep, carved cliffs.

With the beauty of the Caribbean, the heritage of the Mayans, and the easygoing charm of the locals, Isla Mujeres has become a haven for people from all over the world and is the ultimate locale for reawakening the soul.
