For the gamer geek: Hotel Tomo – a Kimpton Hotel, San Francisco
Every room in this anime-themed hotel, aptly located in the Japantown neighbourhood, features wall or ceiling murals by anime artist Heisuke Kitazawa. But this is more than an art hotel – you’ll also find two gaming suites amongst the facilities. The hotel is serious about their equipment – the arcade room provides guests with the most popular video game consoles, and most impressive of all, an 8 by 5 foot screen on which you can play your favourite games.
For the film geeks: Tribeca Grand Hotel, New York
It’s all lights, camera, action at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, when you book the “Director’s Cut” package. On arrival, you’ll be given a Flip Ultra HD camcorder that you can take with you everywhere during your stay in the big apple. After a day of shooting, return to your room, or rather, your “iStudio”, where amazing editing equipment awaits: the room comes with an iMac decked out with all the necessary software from Final Cut Pro. You’ll be ready for the red carpet in no time.
For the kids at heart: LEGOLAND Hotel, California
“Everything is awesome” at this LEGO themed hotel in Carlsbad which features pirate, kingdom or adventure themed hotel rooms. Made up of more than 2 million LEGO bricks, it is a sight to behold. On the outside, a 15-foot-tall dragon perches on a clock tower, greeting guests with the occasional puff of smoke.
For the physics geeks: Le Meridien Cambridge, Cambridge
The Le Meridien Cambridge hotel is designed around the major fields of study at the nearby tech school. Pictures of famous physicists in the bedrooms, bedspreads printed with mathematical equations and robots serving as sculptural art in the lobby are all part of the quirky decor. You can also find KAYAK tech geeks in action nearby, at their East Cambridge office which is home to designers, software developers and data scientists.
For the art geeks: Arte Luise Kunsthotel, Berlin
Referred to as “a gallery where you can spend the night”, the Arte Luise Kunsthotel is ideal for artsy geeks. From the Edward Hopper tribute room to another filled with Marilyn Monroe decor, every room was individually designed by a renowned artist. For the space geeks: Yotel, New York City
Inspired by both air travel and the capsule hotels popular in Japan, the snug rooms at Yotel are called cabins; the front desk is “Mission Control”; check-in and checkout are done at computerised kiosks; and its most famous resident is a robot named Yobot. That’s right – there’s a robot (technically a giant robotic arm) at the ground-floor entrance that, with the push of a few buttons, will take your luggage and store it in bar-coded lockers.
