Pros: Great breakfast, fantastic view from breakfast room. Amanda is a lovely host.
Cons: Beds are too short for tall people. They're about 180cm so anyone taller than that will have to accept your feet stick out.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: We had a lovely stay. The room was great and Amanda was a lovely host who was extremely helpful in offering activities to do during our stay and was a delightful host. The food was excellent and we had a lovely stay and would definitely return.
Cons: Nothing.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Fabulous
Cons: Everything was brilliant.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Spacious, clean, luxurious. Owners have really created a warm friendly place to stay close to Kirkwall town centre. Breakfast great. Little extras like cafetière of real coffee, quirky mugs, puffins abound. Loved it.
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Fab B&B really comfortable and clean and perfect hosting.
Cons: NA
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Lovely breakfast with fantastic view.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: We stayed for two nights at this lovely property and on our first night Amanda made arrangements with us to gain access to the house even though we didn’t arrive until midnight owing to ferry timetables. This was much appreciated. Amanda is very friendly, helpful and chatty. Breakfasts were excellent and served in a big bright room with superb views towards the sea. Would stay here again.

Pros: Location perfect within walking distance of Kirkwell. Hosts friendly and nothing too much trouble. Accommodation was absolutely spotless and of very high quality. Breakfast was amazing and again food was of good quality and perfectly cooked and presented. Would recommend this place wholeheartedly.
Cons: Nothing to dislike. Rated 3 star but in actual fact it is under scored.

Pros: Karrawa Guest House is a lovely and welcoming place, perfect to explore the area. The breakfast was excellent - full Scottish with delicious home made jam. I loved the porridge! The family room was very comfortable and clean, perfect for three of us, with very comfortable mattresses and pillows. The bathroom was modern, spacious, very clean and bright.
Cons: Whilst the bathroom was good in all aspects, the shower drainage was rather slow.
Excellent 10.0

Excellent 9.0
Pros: The hosts were very friendly, and helpful. I didn't arrive until late evening, and they were waiting for me on arrival. Breakfast had to be ordered the night before, but was excellent. Both times I needed taxi's the host's arranged it for me.
Cons: The room was without a Television which is unusual, however I was able to stream the News over the wi-fi. The hotel is at the top of a steep road, so if arriving in Kirkwall I would recommend a taxi from the Town/Airport as although the hotel is reachable by bus, there is a walk (with luggage) up a steep hill.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: The owners were friendly and helpful. The inside of the building had great character. the breakfasts were really good.
Cons: A big bathroom with no hot water and a direct heating shower that was dificult to control. The car parking will be better when it is resurfaced.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Old World grandeur with modern amenities
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Breakfast was great , the owners happily made whatever the clue wanted . You could have cereal/ porridge with fruit/ honey etc . Then have a full cooked breakfast, or just have eggs however you liked them. Very good . The location was outside centre of the town , near to whiskey distillery. So a bit of a walk every day or you could just stop bus . The owners where extremely helpful , given directions , ideas for visiting places etc . Even waited up for me getting in off the late ferry .
Cons: Nothing , they where extremely hospitable, helpful .
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Great B&B with effervescent charm. Fantastic breakfasts!
Good 6.0
Pros: The breakfast was good, the owners were very keen to be helpful and solve any problem
Cons: It is advertised as luxury and priced accordingly. But although this is a grand old house, it is not luxurious. There was a tiny shower cubicle, an economy which spoilt the room, no television and it has been decorated in an oddly mixed way.
Good 7.0
Pros: Convenient location hosts were very nice breakfast was excellent
Cons: Advertised as private bathroom which it was but it was down the corridor
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Located on the edge of Kirkwall but easily accessible by car. Pleasant walks among fields behind the house with great views. Excellent breakfast with all local produce. Friendly and helpful owners.
Cons: There is no TV in the room but that is part of the stepping back in time charm and getting away from it all feeling. Plenty of books and maps to borrow. Free WiFi in the room anyway.

Excellent 8.0
Cons: More staff inter action, but mind you we still have covid.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: I booked a small private room for 2 nights. Every small attention to detail provided through clear instructions upon arrival. Room had everything you might need and access to kitchen to use microwave or cooker and plates and cutlery easy. Room had TV and tea making facilities and was en-suite with with wc and nice shower. Ten minutes walk to bus station and harbour. Was a little hard to find. Supermarkets two minutes walk away. Overall it suited my needs perfectly.
Cons: nothing
Good 6.0
Pros: Location to town center. Close to supermarked.
Cons: It was ok. Nothing I disliked.

Excellent 10.0
Pros: Stunning location Excellent facilities Good food Great staff
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 10.0
Pros: We absolutely loved this place. We hope to go back again but stay more than a couple of nights. The food was some of the best on the island. The staff was incredibly informative, friendly, and enjoyable to interact with. For the first time during 6 weeks of traveling, I said this was the first time I really felt at peace. Take a cup of coffee, sit outside in the morning with sun on your back looking out over the loch, life couldn't get any better.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Breakfast overlooking the loch was great. Staff were friendly and efficient.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Smoked haddock was divine
Cons: A little bigger en suite pls
Excellent 9.0
Pros: great location overlooking the loch. very helpful and friendly staff. great food. comfortable room and bed.
Cons: Dirty curtains and bed valance.
Good 7.0
Pros: The restaurant was first class and the staff excellent. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful with a few exceptions. Setting is lovely. Very comfortable bed.
Cons: The room was substandard for the price with no bath or fridge. Shower room was small and badly designed. Walls are paper thin so can hear music in next door room . Have holiday lets so know the standard required. The hotel purports to like dogs and welcome them. However the slightest misdemeanour was greeted with outrage culminating in being harangued by one of the owners in a most unpleasant manner ( particularly to a guest). Dog owners beware!
Excellent 8.0
Pros: The location was lovely overlooking the loch, and the staff were so helpful and friendly. Breakfasts very good.
Cons: The room we had was very noisy in the evening - sounded like furniture being dragged round, we were there for 4 nights and it was the same every night.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: We both felt very safe as all procedures were carefully in place Beautiful hotel and location
Cons: Nothing

Excellent 9.0
Pros: Breakfast not part of the deal
Cons: Heating a bit spasmodic but we were not cold just put on a jumper.
Good 7.0
Pros: Secluded, safe, well equipped kitchen (including washing machine and dryer) and excellent location in a lovely setting. There were plenty of electrical sockets and the information folder about the property and tourist leaflets we found useful. Bedroom was comfy and bathroom fitted to a high standard. Good parking area with electric car charging, a homely feel (reminded me that self catering can be fun) and a sense of ‘green’ credentials.
Cons: To start with it was a positive experience overall and we would go back, however there were some significant negatives. This suite lacked a seating area and comfy seats where one could relax and watch TV in the evenings. If you wanted to watch TV in the evenings you had to do that by lying on the bed in the chairless bedroom. The only other seating option was two wooden upright kitchen chairs in the kitchen. The property lacked a focal relaxing area. We had good weather on our visit and access to an area outside the suite and a communal lawn at the front. However, as much as we would have liked to sit outside, there was no garden furniture which made the offer somewhat redundant and disappointing - especially given the views surrounding the property. Finally, on our arrival at the property there were some niggling issues. The cutlery, glasses and dishes were not cleaned properly. There were no complimentary toiletries which had been promised. Without sounding ungrateful, we were kindly left some small food items but no tea - yes we’re from UK - and the bread left was past it’s ’best by’ date. Beware stepping out from the shower enclosure as it’s a precipitous step down to the floor. There was an iron supplied but alas no ironing board. I know all the above doesn’t paint a good picture but there were many positives and I think this was just a case of management taking their eye off the ball rather than any fundamental failings. All of the above can be easily fixed. Let’s call it a post Covid hiccup. I did find my dealings with Aviedale professional and they obviously have put a lot of effort in other areas of the property. So those are my negatives but overall I would recommend this little cottage extension and have fond memories of my stay at the Aviedale suite.
Good 7.0
Pros: Very clean and modern. A superbly comfortable bed. Owners concern that all was well. Very quite and remote situation. Good sized garden. Could take kitchen chairs to end of property in garden to see view. Great shower.
Cons: Our fault as we missed fact that no facility to heat or cook food. Pizza we had was dumped. Although good value this property is to limited for say more than a few days stay. Given there is a limited kitchen with small dining table and only a bedroom there is no place to relax other than on the bed. Perversely there is an expensive washer and tumble dryer. Microwave and small 'portable' cooker ring. No view of sea and no apparent outside furniture to use as stated.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Location was good and private, everything you needed was there pots, pans, dishes etc. Some provisions were provided which was a nice touch, we were left to get on with our holiday without being disturbed ( we knew who to contact if we required anything). Ther were plenty of information leaflets on the various attractions and places of intrest to visit available (some were out of date).
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Fantastic location. Very comfortable
Cons: It would have been nice to be able to sit in the garden
Excellent 8.0
Pros: cottage had most of what we needed, good location ,clean and cosy . excellent shower. The welcome box with bread, milk, butter, juice and biscuits was a very nice touch and very much appreciated .Communication was good
Cons: could do with a soft seat for relaxing but dont know where you would put it and a bigger tv for those wet nights
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Lovely location and great facilities, house was well equipped and spotlessly clean
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Excellent Bed. Well kitted out. Clean and Tidy.
Cons: Toilet seat needs adjustment. Could do with a second saucepan.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Location and easy booking in and out.
Cons: Could have done with a light outside for early ferry starts each morning. Occasionally next door made some noise disturbing the peace.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Wonderful welcome from the lovely Laura, even when we arrived in the late evening! The property is also well equipped, copious hot water for great showers, and (for us, not wanting to be in a town) in a perfect location for exploring the islands - including out to Hoy and Rousay.
Cons: Linen and all soft furnishings could do with an upgrade, but we understand that this is a relatively new self-catering operation, so hopefully the owners will reinvest in the next year or so.

Shona & Mike are a lovely couple & made us very welcome on our 3 night stay. We will definitely use the Inn Guest House again on our next visit.
Excellent 10.0
It was beautiful! The views are great, our host was so friendly and helpful. There are a few great walks around here and it’s in a great, quiet location.
Excellent 8.8
Nice location, by the bay, with a pleasant view. After spending quite a few minutes chatting to the welcoming host, we headed upstairs to our (twin) room. It's small but looks nice and clean. The bathroom also looks clean, it's quite small but modern/functional. We had to leave early the next morning to catch the ferry back to Gills but the host was up preparing our breakfast. No complaints, would return. And if I did, the dog would probably recognise me and feel more relaxed :)
Excellent 10.0
This is a very homely b&b. The hosts Shona and Mike are a lovely couple who go out of their way to be helpful. The breakfasts are excellent. There is a comfortable lounge with ample supplies of teas, coffee (and sweets!). It is well situated for travel around Orkney and near to Kirkwall.
Excellent 10.0
great place to stay shona and mike great hosts made us feel at home during our 1 nite stay on our onward journey to shetland then back to kirkwall after our visit to lerwick /shetland

Excellent 8.0
Pros: We were upgraded to the Kirkwall hotel next door as the shore is under going a renovation. The hotel rooms are obviously recently renewed. Nicely decorated and beds comfortable. Nice touches like fresh coffee and cafetiers, good quality soaps and shampoos, shower was large and had a rainfall head. Bathroom is a little tight if you are a larger sized person. The bar area is lovely and restaurant serves decent local food. Breakfast is excellent but is an additional charge to the room rate ( not explained on arrival ).
Cons: It is very difficult to find information on booking .com about the breakfast option the shore's own website says inclusive but apparently the new owners ( the Kirkwall hotel) say they don't have access to change it !? Cost us an extra £100 for breakfasts, which came as a nasty shock. It is an excellent location and could be an excellent hotel if better communication was given on web site.
Mediocre 2.0
Pros: Location
Cons: Like staying in a 'Marie Celeste' hotel. Felt like a ghost ship. Unpleasant damp musty smell in the building. No restaurant or bar. Reception and breakfast/dinner served at another hotel. This was mentioned in the small welcome message from booking.com, nothing in the confirmation email or hotel site. Not one day were all the basics in the room and didn't have to ask for basic supplies. House keeping was very poor. Always something missing. Towels taken off the towel rail and folded nice and neatly on the bed whilst still wet????? Back door entry along a dark alley, only lit at one end. Very slippery under foot in the wet. Such a shame this once lovely hotel is being neglected.
Okay 4.0
Cons: Entrance to the rooms now part of a neighbouring hotel. The access was dark and slippery. The room felt damp. The restaurant was in the next door building. Room not serviced but that was because of covid and excusable.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Beautiful hotel, central location, luxurious rooms.
Cons: Room above the public bar, very noisy until early hours.
Okay 5.0
Pros: Location
Cons: Small room
Good 6.0
Pros: location is great for Kirkwall town centre Friendly staff and good breakfast in nearby Kirkwall Hotel nice toiletries
Cons: The main door kept being left open appreciate low crime area but not ideal broken shower head dated room and really squeaky floor
Excellent 10.0
Pros: I ended up staying at Kirkwall hotel which is run by the same management. Everything was superb. Recently decorated, comfy large beds, touch or Orkney with the coffee in the room, great selection of drinks at the bar.
Cons: Nothing much! The food could be upscaled.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Nice clean room and convenient for town and the small boat basin where I was catching a boat in the morning. Nice shower and comfy bed.
Cons: There was a fan, from the restaurant kitchen I think, which kept going on and off in the early morning which was a little off-putting.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Cozy. Two decent sized rooms. Good shower. Clean. Central.

Excellent 9.0
Pros: Lovely hotel, close to town centre. Smashing breakfast.
Good 7.0
Pros: Slept well. Good breakfast.
Cons: Could not open windows so no fresh air even as COVID still around. Bathroom didn’t have enough warmth to dry towels. Room dark but we were not in during the day.
Good 7.0
Pros: Very good. Staff very helpful
Cons: Very little given Covid.
Good 7.0
Pros: The staff were fantastic and breakfast was good
Cons: The room was cold on arrival and only had an electric heater. The quilt was a little thin for the weather so had to keep the heater on all night
Good 7.0
Pros: location, friendly staff who stayed open late to allow us to check in late (really appreciated that!) also really excellent breakfast with quality ingredients and a good veggie option.
Cons: Nothing to fault really. The decor in the rooms look a little dated but was clean and bed was comfy. We were only staying one night but would happily have stayed longer. it’s an old building so people with mobility problems might have access issues up the stairs but wasn’t a bother for us .
Good 6.0
Pros: The location was good at the centre of Kirkwall. The breakfast was fine.
Cons: There was no one in the Hotel at night and when we arrived it was dark and we had to wait for someone to book us in. He showed us the car park and helped us with our luggage but there was very little lighting. We were shown our room but it was only when he left we realised how bad it was. We complained to the young lady at breakfast and were immediately given another room which was very nice.
Good 7.0
Pros: Location great, only one night so comfortable enough Friendly but busy staff at breakfast
Cons: Dated decor, not staffed full time but fair response given staffing availability (just had to call)
Good 6.0
Pros: we had to transfer to the Hotel Ola due to the original hotel having electrical work done, the room was good in size but was in need of update carpet had big stains all over. staff were helpful and very nice. i just feel that the hotel could do with a lick of paint. i must point out that over all the hotel was good, and this is purely a personal point of view. And under the circumstances of the last 18 months we should maybe give a little leeway.
Cons: just a little refresh in the rooms would have been better, but we understand that times have been a little difficult for the last 18 months so i think they will improve as they get up and running again.

Excellent 9.6
Pros: Staff are nice and very helpful. I love their huge kitchen. There are so many kitchenware for the guests and large space for storage. Of course, the hostel is very clean. They have two washing machines and two dryers. The guests can use them between 1700-0800 because the laundry room is far away from the rooms!
Cons: I stayed 5 nights in this hostel. The location is not bad but you have to walk from the tourist office or Tesco. I suggest you can take off the bus at Tesco and buy some food before going back the hostel. Because of the weather, there was some problem of WiFi signals. Although there are some disadvantage, I still love this place. :-D
Okay 5.4
Pros: The staff were very lovely. Some very lovely guests too. Many of whom were in the same state of shock as I at the place! Sorry! Love YHA but this hostel is desperately in need of TLC and a little bit of personality. Great value but take extra blankets. Parking.
Cons: No heating on the night we stayed No warning that hot water takes forever to warm up Uncomfortable bed - springs poking us! Room smelt like men’s urinal plus detoll to cover it up! Broken toilets - some very malodorous No toilet roll/soap One of those places where you don’t want to touch door handles or walk barefoot!
Good 7.5
Pros: Absolutely good price for its value. Really nice staff! Good location for exploring the city and island. Very quiet and warm. I would come again!
Cons: very old carpets! no breakfast available because it was out of season.
Good 7.9
Pros: I have booked a 14 bed room but when I came it was 2 bed room, witch was great. Bed was very comfortable and clean. Room was also very clean.
Cons: I sent two messages through booking and one by email, no one replied. I had urgent question because check in was until 22 and I came at 23:50. Nobody was there but I have found an envelope with my name on it. It would just be nicer if I had some info before arriving :)
Good 7.1
Pros: Staff was quick to resolve any problems.
Cons: Single room was double booked. Unable to use Bike Shed: locked. Needed to leave Bike outdoors not secured to railings etc
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Location is great - it's a short walk into the center of town and to the bus station.
Good 6.3
Pros: Clean and tidy,
Cons: Was very hard to find and staff were not answering calls... bit were apologetic when I eventually arrived
Okay 5.2
The staff are delightful , but the Hostels Association needs to invest some serious money on maintenance, upgrading plumbing, taking stained sheets out of circulation, and modernising room door locks. The doors cannot be prevented from slamming, which is a problem when people need to use the communal toilets during the night.
