Car hire excess insurance in Kuala Lumpur

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some Kuala Lumpur car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in Kuala Lumpur.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Kuala Lumpur car rental.

Top tips for hiring a car in Kuala Lumpur

  • The best way to explore Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding wonderful landscape of Malaysia is by renting a car upon your arrival. The city is encircled by scenic recreational areas like the Recreational Forest Bukit Lagong or the Nuang Mountain Recreational Forest, which tempt travelers to discover their hidden secrets and experience the Malaysian countryside. A car will also help to explore the city from the National Zoo in the north to the Mines Wonderland in the south.
  • Rent a car upon landing at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at one of the many service desks including Avis, Hertz, or Europcar. Head to the Transportation Hub to choose from the cars on offer and then follow the signs towards the city center. It will take about 50 minutes to drive to Kuala Lumpur – another reason why picking up a hire car upon your arrival is a clever choice, so that travelers can start their journey quickly and easily.
  • Driving defensively in Kuala Lumpur is a good idea, as turn signals are rarely used and changing lanes can require some time and pushy driving behavior. Tailgating is also common on highways, so keep your distance from the car ahead, adhere to the speed limit and double-check before entering intersections or roundabouts.
  • Traffic can increase considerably in Kuala Lumpur during rush hour, which is between 8:00 and 10:00 am and 5:00 and 8:00 pm. When it rains, drive slowly and defensively, as vision can get blurry. When driving to the airport, plan at least 2 hours extra to ensure a punctual arrival at the airport.

  • As changing lanes can be difficult and parking is scarce in the inner city, opt for a compact car that will whizz in and out of the city easier and can squeeze into most parking spots. A smaller car will also cost less and require less gas; however, for families and people who need more luggage space, get a minivan or SUV to gain extra space without going too big.

  • Adhering to the speed limit posted on signs is pivotal; also, bear in mind that limits are given in kilometers per hour. General regulations allow up to 60 km/h (37 mph) in the city and 90 km/h (56 mph) on state roads. Freeways generally allow up to 110 km/h (68 mph), but if there is rain, strong wind, or the area is mountainous, it may be reduced to 80 or 90 km/h (50-56 mph).

  • The average price for petrol lies at RM2.22 per liter ($2.12 per gallon). While some petrol stations offer 24-hour service, other petrol stations close at 10pm. Bear that in mind and refuel long before running out of gas. Petrolstations around the airport or alongside highways tend to be more expensive than city stations.

  • On-street parking in Kuala Lumpur is very restricted and hard to find, so opting for accommodation that already includes a parking space is your best bet. Alternatively, there are car parks and garages that can also be used to park a car, and, especially during the day, parking at a shopping mall while exploring the city is a good option since these parking garages are highly frequented and therefore safer.
