Choosing car hire in Surat Thani doesn't require you to take anything special into account, like icy roads or monsoon rains, so choose your vehicle based on the number of people in your party and whether you're going to stay close to the city centre or not. If you're travelling solo or as a couple, a compact economy car will be all you'll need. Families can hire larger sedans or an MPV. If you're visiting on business, a comfortable saloon will be ideal. You won't have to hire anything more advanced like a 4x4 to cope with the roads in the general Surat Thani region outside of the city centre, as they're in very good condition.

There are various speed limits that apply across Thailand. If you choose a standard passenger vehicle for your Surat Thani car hire, you can drive at 80 km/h in built-up areas, at 90 km/h outside of these and at 120 km/h on motorways. If you want to have some fun and hire a tuk-tuk (motorised rickshaw) for a day rather than use your hire car, you're limited to 45 km/h in built-up areas and 60 km/h outside these. The locals are polite drivers, though, so be respectful of the speed limits.

There's plenty of free parking in Surat Thani. Much of it is clustered around the Mueang Surat Thani district, where the car parks are open 24 hours a day. You'll also be able to get free parking in the Phunphin District. Many of the city's attractions also offer free parking, such as the night market at the wharf in the Ko Samui district. You'll find cheap paid car parks near the beaches too – they're free to enter but you pay for your time when you leave. The hotels also have parking areas, and naturally, you should be able to park at yours overnight.
