Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some Basel car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in Basel.
Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Basel car rental.
Great car, straight forward rentalPros: No pressure to take out additional insurance. Car was relatively new in perfect condition.Cons: No one at the desk at Airport when we arrived to turn in the car

Pros: they were very friendly despite the fact that I had the wrong pickup time and was 6h later

Pros: Pretty much everything. Drop off at MUC is excellent, takes just secondsCons: Hertz office at Dreispitz in Basel is hard to find. Signs lead to a carwash, not to the office. The vehicle had two tires inside, taking up the entire trunk space. The guy at the office was telling me unbelievable stories that I have to carry those tires with me. Fortunately in another Hertz office they gladly took those tires from me.

Great car, nice staffPros: Everything about the rental went smoothly, the car was clean and comfortable.Cons: It was a bit confusing to find the rental place, since Basel airport has a french side and a swiss side. Of course it's not Hertz's fault, just pay attention if you're renting in Basel airport. Another point is that we paid in advance for a second driver and ended up not using it - would have been nice if there was an option to add another driver in the middle of the trip.
Pros: A choice of carsCons: I selected the wrong pick up location and couldn't change it. However 6th allowed an alternative drop off location foc. Slow collection of car due to slow customers ahead of me. Too many choices at the desk at hiring time

Cons: Didn't realize that there wasn't an easy way to get from the airport to the downtown Sixt location. And then when our flight was late and we couldn't get to the downtown location before they closed, we couldn't transfer our reservation to the Sixt airport location because we prepaid through kayak. We ended up paying for an additional car for one day and then we had to drive back to the city the next day when the downtown location was open to get it all straightened out. It was kind of a pain.

Bright and shiny red Fiat 500Pros: Loved the red Fiat 500, people were kind at Sixt and very helpful. Thanks for all.

Cons: The original car I was given had a slow leak in a tire. A warning light came on indicating low tire pressure. I filled up the tire, but even though I didn't drive it for the next couple days, the tire continued to lose air. Ended up having to swap the car. Besides THAT inconvenience, I received an email from SIXT wanting to know how *I* had damaged the car! Not nice, and definitely an unpleasant experience.

Pros: Tha car itself.Cons: The assistant didn t provide any explanation about the car and its way of working. Poor information.
Cons: At drop off , Barbra, customer service extremely rude when I asked her why the extra charges, she kept saying she didn't care and it's not her responsibility when I questioned the extra charges

Not AmusedPros: The car was newCons: it wasn't the car I had booked. I booked a compact like a VW Up or similar, manual, for 143 and ended up getting a massive Skoda Rapid wagon, automatic, and had to pay almost double the price for it at 217. I had no time to argue. But I got thoroughly ripped off. Will stick with Hertz

Cons: Car via Hertz did not have a full tank! Filled it up for 8 CHF, No compensation. Was requested instead to fill it up to the same "not full level of 7/8". Poor customer service! Avoid Hertz at Basel!

Cons: Charge at end of trip was three times more than quote confirmed by Kayak. Still unresolved

Great valuePros: Friendly service, car was as advertised, quick handover and no hard sell of extras.Cons: Nothing
Pros: The agent at the airport station was very helpful.Cons: We had booked to pick up our car on Monday, Apr 5, but the station was closed because it was Easter Monday. So we had to haul our luggage across town to the airport station where our reservation could be honored.

Expensive....but great servicePros: The lady at the counter was really nice and helpful. Just the price was quite hefty... Payed 130$ a day for a midsize , becuse i took full waiver It should b much cheaper for good drivers who have a clean slate in respect of car damages Shouldnt cost more then 75$ a day max
Basel is a great place to be based, especially with a hire car. A vehicle will allow you to explore not only the city’s main attractions, such as its many art galleries and museums, but also other destinations in Switzerland, Germany, and France. Head to Rotteln Castle in Germany, which is only about 25 minutes away from Basel, or to the Black Forest for some fairytale-like views.
EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (EAP) is about a 10-minute drive from Basel’s city center. The airport is divided into two sectors, the French one and the Swiss one, and you can circulate between both through the access area on the terminal’s third floor. Car hire desks on the French side are located on level 2 of Hall 1, and on the Swiss side they can be found on level 2 of Hall 4.
Because the Old Town area can be tricky to navigate, opt for parking the car in the surrounding areas instead. If you do drive there, remember that trams always have the priority. Dipped headlights must be on at all times. If you drive through rural areas, be cautious as you may come across herds of animals crossing the roads.
As with any main city, Basel experiences some heavy traffic during peak hour, so avoid driving between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and then again between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. during the week. The A35 heading to the airport can also get quite congested during rush hour, so if you have to be at the airport at a specific time, plan your journey accordingly.

If you’re just driving across the city of Basel, a small, compact car is a better option for navigating and parking downtown. But if you’re hitting the road and heading to the countryside or even across country borders, book a mid-size sedan, as it offers more space and comfort, especially if you’re with family or friends.
The speed limit in built-up areas is usually 50 km/h (31 mph) unless the posted signs indicate otherwise. The speed limit on main roads and other minor roads outside urban areas is 80 km/h (50 mph), and on expressways it is 100 km/h (62 mph). Motorways allow drivers to go at a maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).
The average petrol prices in Basel are around $6.09 USD per gallon. Some petrol stations may offer lower prices of about $5.72 USD per gallon, but you can also find prices as high as $6.70 USD per gallon. There is a petrol station next to car park F6 on the French side of the airport, and one next to car park S3 on the Swiss side. Both are open 24 hours.
Avoid parking in the Old Town, as spaces are scarce and fairly expensive. Metered parking across the city is enforced from 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday, with rates ranging between $1-3 per hour, depending on location. For longer stays, you can buy either a half-day ticket or a day ticket, for $6 and $10 respectively, at the BVB (Basler Verkehrs Betriebe) ticket machines.
