KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Coolangatta

  • The Gold Coast spans from Coolangatta on the New South Wales border to Beenleigh, just south of Brisbane, with a hire car offering unparalleled access to the stretch of sandy beaches. Hiring a car on the Gold Coast makes trips to the beach simpler, with the ability to easily transport your items rather than carry them on the bus or light rail. In addition to easily visiting theme parks such as Movie World and Wet’n’Wild, having your own vehicle opens up access to inland rainforests, like Springbrook National Park and Tamborine National Park, which are difficult to reach by public transport.
  • Reception desks for car hire companies are located directly across the hallway from Domestic Arrivals and the Qantas Club at Gold Coast Airport. With hire cars from major operators including Avis, Hertz, Budget and Thrifty within walking distance of the terminal, you can be on the road shortly after landing.
  • Thanks to its warm and sunny climate, the Gold Coast is a popular destination for cyclists. Remain attentive while driving on city and rural roads, maintaining a safe distance of at least 1.5 m when passing cyclists. Also, be aware that a light rail system passes through the middle of Surfers Paradise and it’s important not to queue or perform U-turns over the tram tracks. If you are travelling up to Brisbane via the Gateway Motorway, ensure your hire agreement includes toll access.
  • Peak hour traffic on the Gold Coast is not nearly as bad as some other major cities across Australia; however, it’s best to avoid driving between 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–18:00. High St in central Southport is one of the most affected arterials, with the strip from North St to Queen St being especially congested.
  • If you're visiting Coolangatta from outside Queensland, there are a few road rules to be aware of. If you're visiting Coolangatta from a state that requires a two-second gap between yourself and the car in front of you, remember that Queensland requires cars to keep a three-second gap. Alcohol laws are stricter than in some other states too, with passengers barred from consuming alcohol while in the car. Also, remember that you need to indicate when leaving a roundabout (even if you're just driving straight through). If you need to leave your vehicle, it is considered 'unattended' once you're more than 3 metres away from it. This means it will need to be fully stopped with no keys in the ignition.
  • Queensland also has the strictest laws regarding sleeping in your car. The Gold Coast considers it camping and as such it is only allowed in designated campground areas. Queensland does have a number of designated rest areas intended for short stays, so you can plan long trips around these. You can stay for up to 20 hours. If you plan on having a night out drinking, make sure you have nearby accommodation or a designated driver to get you home. If you're in your car with the keys, you're considered to be in charge of the vehicle; this means you can be charged with drink-driving, even without driving the vehicle.
  • Make the most of Coolangatta car hire and visit nearby towns and attractions. For example, you can cross the border into New South Wales and visit Byron Bay in less than an hour. (Public transport takes almost twice as long). There are a number of interesting stops along the way, including the towns of Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and Ewingsdale. If you take a short detour inland, you can visit Tropical Fruit World in Duranbah and take a tour of the family-run farm with over 400 different types of fruit.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Coolangatta for $42 or less
  • Medium hire cars in Coolangatta are around 23% cheaper than other car types, on average

I called to find out where the office was and was told it was at the airport terminal. In fact it wasn’t there and we had trouble finding address on the instructions. When we finally got there, there was nothing there – no office, no sign. We kept calling the phone number and it took nearly 2 hours to get our car. The car was filthy. Qverall the whole experience was terrible and I will never use Yesaway again!

The communication was poor, and the staff was unhelpful. During a natural disaster, when a cyclone was about to hit the city, I called the staff to request a change in my drop-off location. However, instead of assisting me, multiple staff members kept transferring me from one person to another for over 1.5 hours and several phone calls. It was extremely frustrating, as each representative kept repeating the same message—that I couldn’t change the drop-off location—despite me explaining that a cyclone was approaching. Their lack of flexibility and common sense was astonishing. In the end, I had no choice but to drive to another city, as the original airport's operations were suspended, yet the staff still insisted I return the car to that location. (I doubt Thrifty tests all its staff, making sure that they must not have any brain cells- no thinking and no common sense)
