Pick-up Point was 50 Miles from the AirportThe staff made their best effort to accommodate us.When I request a car at an airport (NRT) I expect the car to be there, not in the middle of the city. I did not check the fine print. Fortunately the staff cancelled the original and accommodated us at some expense. Because of back problems, I parked in front of a grocery to buy some supplies, and was ticketed. It only took a couple of hours to work out the problem at the police station and return office since I speak Japanese. However, the fact that the navigation system did not work for the last two hours when I had to run around asking people for directions to locate the police station and car return spot did not help.

NothingThe policy about cancellation is greedy and unfair. I just missed the 48 hour window which by the way is very unusual and not clearly labelled in any of the emails or when booking and had to pay full price for a car I was not going to be using. Its ludicrous.

Car hire excess insurance in Tokyo

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some Tokyo car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in Tokyo.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Tokyo car rental.

Top tips for hiring a car in Tokyo

  • Travel at your own pace in Tokyo by picking up a hire car and avoid riding congested trains across town. Attractions outside of the city, such as Hakone National Park and Mount Fuji, can be enjoyed from more angles and viewpoints with a hire car, as public transport is directed only to central points that are flooded with tourists. Driving to Yokohama Sankeien Garden takes roughly 40min, while a connection of multiple trains requires 1h 10min (if connections are smooth).
  • Car hire counters are located on the 2nd Floor of Terminal 3 at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), which is where all international flights arrive. Reception desks are also available on the 1st Floor of Terminal 1 and 2 for domestic arrivals, with footbridge access to the car parks. Offices for hire companies are found on the 1st Floors of Terminal 1 and 2 at Narita International Airport (NRT) and the vehicles are parked within walking distance.
  • An International Driving Permit must be obtained to hire a car in Japan. This must be acquired in your home country before leaving and can take several weeks to receive. There are many toll roads throughout Tokyo and it’s best to ensure your hire car is fitted with an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) device to avoid having to stop at payment booths. If intersections simultaneously show a red light and green arrow, cars can turn in the direction of the arrow though they can not drive forwards through the intersection.
  • Tokyo experiences heavy congestion across the city between 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–19:00. Central business areas such as Marunouchi and Ginza have slow-moving traffic throughout the day and it is best to avoid driving through there if you can. Snow is common in Tokyo and if you’re visiting in the winter months, you should keep an eye out for road closures.
