Pros: Drop off was OK, but no closing invoice was issued when I dropped off. I was promised this would be emailed, but this did not materialiseCons: Issue closing invoice on drop-off

Cons: After we told them no insurance they put it on the paper work then when we pointed it out he had to start the paperwork over again. Originally issued a car with no gas and smelled like cigarettes badly. Had to unpack our backs and go all the way back to the rental center. No apology. Just a silent reissue of keys. Drop off was chaotic. No return recipet was issued.

Watch Your Bank/Credit StatementPros: The car was clean.Cons: You will get charged unexplained fees that will double the quoted Kayak rate, including a "fuel service fee" that no one will disclose to you until it shows up on your receipt and credit card statement. I will not be renting with Avis again.

Pros: It was a good car for the category I have selected.Cons: The car had some noise in the wheels during the whole renting days, which I could not identify. I believe that if the car has gone through some check before being delivered, this slight problem could be fixed.

Another great experience at Avis-OR TamboPros: Prompt, efficient pick-up and drop-off, kind service, well-maintained, clean vehicle.Cons: It was hard to find the fuel station at OR Tambo Airport to refuel, and since I was running against the clock, I couldn't. But the Avis staff assured me that they'd handle it.

Professional-looking but service can be improvedPros: The car was clean. When we rented the car, the ladies at the counter took time to explain where we were not insured (we only got PAI and CAD), which we appreciated, since we would probably spend more if we didn't have the extra insurance they promoted at the counter.Cons: We weren't too happy with the car selection. We reserved a Hyundai Accent (or similar), and the car we ended up with had really slow acceleration (VW Vito), which I don't think is at part with the Accent's. When we returned the car, the guys who received it said we would get our invoice within 5 working days, despite us insisting for our invoice. We had to wait for it from the man at the counter.
Cons: I still have yet to receive a receipt from them for the rental so I cannot get reimbursed from my organization.

Great car. A bit dicey on front and back ends.Pros: Great car!!!Cons: We had a trainee helping us at pick up and the other service agents did not help her as much as she needed. It made our pick up time extremely long. Finding the drop off location at OR Tambo is a nightmare. Everyone who arrives there on time deserves a credit on their account.

Pros: I enjoyed leaving and never rent anything with hettzCons: When I removed the car the employee said that the car was new and had no defects, including the marking sheet showed no malfunctions. Arriving in the car we found several risks and breakdowns and took a picture, because the employee said that anything later was discounted. but at the time of returni

Pros: The staff was friendly and the car was nice.Cons: The wait was quite long getting the car. I was told it was easy to see the gas station at the airport upon the return but I didn’t. Someone from another rental helped me find it and actually rode with me. And they charged my credit card a $1300 deposit but haven’t credited it yet as promised.

Pros: Car wasn’t filled with gas. Had to to fight with Hertz about that. Didn’t believe me that I’d received an empty vehicle. Also over charged fur insurance.

Pros: The staff offered an upgrade. The process was easy and fast upon checking in and out. We got a great price as well!Cons: The car was small. We could have gotten a bigger size only because my husband is a giant! But that was out doing, not the company’s.

Did not receive our carPros: NothingCons: We came to the counter around 8am when we were supposed to pick up our car and they didn’t even what we ordered. So we waited because their systems were down. We waited over 45 minutes and still no car. We need to leave the airport around 9am to be able to make it to something we had planned. So we had to leave hertz and go to another rental company. We were 30 mins late to something that was very important. We were very unsatified with our service. Hertz made us late to something we needed to be on time too.
Disappointed at Europcar - not international standCons: Did not like the car - had problems. Also no consideration taken that I drove it back to the airport late at night to minimise the issue and still got charged petrol. I should not have done that and let Europcar deliver a replacement car to me. Also disappointed that Europcar does not have no insurance option for zero excess! That provides piece of mind to the driver to have it as an option. OR Tambo pick up drop off.
Renting a car is the perfect option for those wanting to explore not only Johannesburg, but also other major destinations across South Africa. Public transportation is often crowded and unreliable, and it is more cost-efficient to self-drive to some attractions rather than take tours. Rent a car and visit the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Cradle of Humankind, or embark on a longer road trip and cross over the border to Botswana for a self-led safari.
All the major car hire companies can be found at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport (JNB), which is just over 12 miles from the city center. The car hire desks are located to the left side as you enter the parking lot’s ground floor, just opposite Domestic Arrivals. Avis is open 24 hours. When driving out of the airport, you’ll find many “spaghetti” junctions, so, if you don’t know the area, make sure to ask for a GPS device when renting the car.
The first thing you need to know when driving in Johannesburg is that traffic runs on the left side of the road. Road signs are mainly expressed in both Afrikaans and English, and the distances are measured in kilometers rather than miles. When driving in the city, make sure to keep your windows rolled up, especially if you’re stopped. Avoid driving at night, as roads are dimly lit and the chances of encountering drunk, reckless drivers are higher.
Avoid driving through Johannesburg and particularly around the airport area during the morning rush hour, which usually happens between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., and then again during the evening peak hour, between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Traffic jams in Johannesburg can easily add up to an hour to your travels, so plan your journey in advance if you have to be somewhere at a specific time.

If you’re looking to drive long distances, fuel efficiency in a vehicle should be your top priority, so opt for an economy car. But, if you’re headed out on a safari, a four-wheel drive is a good idea. When traveling there in the summer months (November to February), a car with air conditioning is a must.
The speed limit in the city is usually 60 km/h (37 mph), but it may be lower in certain residential areas. Other non-urban open roads have a speed limit of 100 km/h (62 mph), and freeways typically have a speed limit of 120 km/h (75 mph). However, speed limits often change, so keep an eye out for the posted signs.

There are several safe parking spaces and parking lots around the city, usually looked after by car guards (attendants in reflective vests) who will take care of your vehicle in exchange for a few rands of tip. If you’re not driving much around the city itself, ideally you should either book a hotel that can offer parking or leave your car at the airport and pick it up when needed.
