Dublin car hire experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Dublin
Verified travelerSept 2026
Be careful about booking through value/deal websites. We were caught off guard when we had to pay almost double the expected amount to have 2 drivers. Otherwise, great car, great service, and very happy with the rental
Verified travelerSept 2026
Get your own insurance. Check for USB plugs. Ensure the 12v power plug works. Take pictures of the car condition first. The rental company with nitpick the condition upon return.
Verified travelerJune 2026
Check your car insurance provided through your credit card and obtain a letter from them. Using a hybrid turned out to be a good decision as the price of gas in Ireland is very high compared to Canada. It would also be a good idea to know some of the road signs that are found there.
Verified travelerJuly 2026
If you are from a country outside of Ireland, you will have to pay for the extremely high full coverage insurance or they will hold the full amount that the vehicle costs on your credit card, which can only be Visa or Mastercard, until you return the vehicle. I rented a small car from Sixt for 9 days and it cost $1,350.
DawnJuly 2026
Do the research and don’t be tricked by a cheap price online and end up with a manual transmission that you will later be talked out of to be upsold.
Verified travelerAug 2026
Stick to your guns and make them give you what you reserved and figure out what your insurance needs really are.
FRANCISAug 2026
A small car The roads are narrow if you are North American driver
Verified travelerJune 2026
Don’t use Budget! Ensure you have the basic insurance coverage on all bookings.
Verified travelerMay 2026
My recommendation to travelers to Ireland is that, if your plan is drive the Wild Atlantic Way and Ring of Kerry, is to pick a smaller vehicle than you normally dive at home. Some of Ireland’s backroads and ancient bridges are only a single vehicle width.
MichaelJan 2026
Pay the full insurance to lower the cost of the hold or you’re up for a few thousand. It didn’t worry us and the rest of the process was very smooth.
Verified travelerFeb 2026
Apparently in Dublin you will need to purchase the extra insurance, so I recommend getting the car directly from the rental company not through a 3rd party website
Verified travelerNov 2025
You will get manual transmission unless you specifically select and pay for an automatic.
AmyJuly 2025
I wish I'd known that if you are 76 or older, you cannot rent a car unless you have written letters from your doctor, stating that you are a regular capable driver and from your insurance company stating that you have had no accidents in the last five years!
Verified travelerJuly 2025
Check on insurance requirements and make sure to have a credit card that you are not planning on using while there. All the add ons will drain your account.
ChristineMay 2025
Get the insurance ahead of time it is expensive, but gives you pieced of mind. The early morning drop off at Shannon airport is amazing. You park your car in the terminal. Return your keys at the desk inside the terminal. Remind them where you park the car and you’re off. It was awesome! No shuttle bus. Everyone at the desk was friendly and helpful both coming and going
CathieMay 2025
Hire at airport for convenience. Roads can be narrow. Learn about the pull outs to let cars pass.
Verified travelerSept 2024
Intermediate is the minimum for family of 4 or 4 adults with smaller luggage.
Verified travelerSept 2024
If foreign traveler, hire from onsite airport agencies.
Verified travelerSept 2024
get the insurance that covers flat tires.
Verified travelerSept 2024
Insurance seems to be a huge scam. Do your research beforehand since they don't post it clearly on their site.
DonaldAug 2024
We had chose a small car and it proved to be the best option to drive around Ireland. Stick shift was difficult with left hand for a start but improved rapidly after a while.
Verified travelerJuly 2024
A smaller diesel car is a good choice for Ireland in general. Fuel is cheap, and the smaller cars work best in the south where the roads are narrow.
Verified travelerJune 2024
If you drive on a toll road, some (eflow.ie) require you to pay the toll online by the next day, and you also have to know your VIN number. When it comes to navigating, Google Maps sends you on narrow roads (designated as L routes) so it's best to travel with a map and plan your route ahead of time then use Google Maps Waze knowing your route so you can avoid the really narrow roads.
Verified travelerAug 2024
I would suggest asking for the damage report on the car and take photos on pick up. If you can afford it, take the full comprehensive. That said, they do push the full comprehensive at pick up, but I think this is something across the board for all car rental agencies, not just Eurocar. If you don't, then make sure you have photos and the damage report.
UgoJuly 2024
If you rent a car with insurance through your credit card, be sure to know the laws in Ireland for it. You will need a coverage letter and some free space on a credit card for the large deposit required.
RaymondJuly 2024
Pay close attention when pumping fuel in Ireland. The fuel pump color coding is different then the USA. (green is gas and black is diesel.
Verified travelerJune 2024
Make sure you have documents showing you are insurred with your credit card if you want to use the credit card insurrance
Verified travelerAug 2024
Leave enough time to drop car off. Cars are at a car park nearby. You need take a shuttle back to airport
TaaviAug 2024
Waiting in the line was a bit long… make sure that you have that extra half an hour…
Verified travelerJune 2024
Try renting outside of dublin, had to pay 20$ of toll just to leave the airport area.
MimiMar 2024
When you’re picking up the car, ask how to deal with the toll. What we did was just pay each time using a credit card, which is the easiest thing to do. But make sure that the car doesn’t already have a tag. If it does, then you can just drive through and pay them back later.

Get the smallest vehicle your group can fit in. Roads and parking spots are often tight
Verified travelerMay 2024
Your will be billed an admin fee of €10 to use the M50 tolls. these tolls are €3.60 each way and can be usually paid for online or at many petrol stations in Ireland. The bill addition is not optional.
namdoMar 2024
There’s a flat fee if you plan to go Northern Ireland.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Plan on paying twice what year rate is. After you get to the counter in Ireland they drop a $200 required insurance policy on you as well as various taxes that did not show up online. My $350 rental car became almost $800 by the time I left.
Verified travelerMar 2024
We were told on the side not to rent from these smaller companies from America. They get you with a low price and then jab you once you arrive. Stick with bigger, more reputable companies, look for a price that includes insurance.
Verified travelerNov 2023
When in doubt stay to the left. The car was very worth it, and I recommend driving around the parking lot and getting a feel for the car. There is no shame in the "left" bracelet! It saved me multiple times. Street parking was a nightmare but thankfully we didn’t stay in the city, we drove around the country
lynneOct 2023
Absolutely buy the full insurance available! The roads are narrow, the speed limits are high for the roads, and there are wide buses coming at you on the roads. Because parking is expense in the cities, plan ahead where you can park.
BrunaOct 2023
The traffic is terrible in the town, but it's worth renting a car when you want to travel to another county.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Be prepared to drive a standard transmission on the wrong side of the road! Takes guts!
Verified travelerSept 2023
Driving in Dublin is alright. Roads around Ireland are beautiful! 😊
Verified travelerSept 2023
We got the car for a road trip. We didn’t need a car inside Dublin. You should inspect the car and tires and don’t let them give you a car that’s not in order. Don’t assume they will have done a proper inspection on it.

Always stay on the outer left on roundabouts Mind the left side Don't take yourself to serious All the places I went took CC including the toll stations
Verified travelerOct 2023
Make sure you understand driving on the left side of the road, and study up on roundabouts in Ireland!
MariaSept 2023
I’m sure your car is an automatic on your reservation, unless you drive stick.
Verified travelerNov 2023
This location is ok but you need to take the tram to access.
Verified travelerSept 2023
It was crazy! We drove in circles and then just left town.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Always keep left when driving. Look right when entering roundabouts.
saraiOct 2023
Research full insurance and final price!
DonSept 2023
Comparison shopping is a must.
Verified travelerJune 2023
Video and check your rental thoroughly . Most vehicles are manual transmission so if you need an automatic request one. Have some form of GPS either your phone or built in the car. Roads in Ireland outside of cities are pretty narrow with limited passing areas and the occasional farm vehicle. People tend to drive slower than posted limit. Be patient. And Keep left : ie steering wheel to road centre line not curb side 😁 Be safe
SteveJuly 2023
I think I'd suggest going straight to the rental companies and making sure all your coverages and requirements are booked in advance. It is very confusing and stress inducing when your unsure and making changes to the reservation at the airport / airport lot.
ronAug 2023
Rent directly through the car rental company. And qeeq and try to get a rental company on site vs having to deal with shuttle buses especially after getting off an overnight flight.
TraceyJune 2023
I did not drive in Dublin, other than the area around the airport. Country driving and driving in Galway, Cork, Kilkenny, and Waterford was very manageable.
Verified travelerJune 2023
The motorways were great - vast improvement over years ago. Just have to pay attention & use gps / navsat if you don’t know the area.
BillJune 2023
Definitely take the insurance. Our car was dinged in a car park during one of our family excursions. Worth every euro….
KayleeAug 2023
Was a smooth rental process, pick up went well and drop off went even faster!!
Verified travelerAug 2023
Great option picking up car at off-airport location.
MarkJune 2023
Full concentration required when driving in any city. Recommend automatic instead of manual transmission if your not used to stick shift, especially if your driving on opposite side of road from your origin country.
Verified travelerAug 2023
We spent most of our time outside Dublin, and when we did spend the day in the city, we parked at Carrigmines and took the Luas (train) into the city.
CynthiaAug 2023
I can’t believe that I’m supporting this, but travel insurance, or book with a company that will refund your money if you can’t make your trip.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Check your car before driving away. Make sure there are no scratches or anything that haven’t been registered. Make videos and photos as proof.
CronanJuly 2023
Take your time and plan your trip each day. The traffic can be very busy at times so try to work around that.
TomJune 2023
Better to use public transit and ride share if staying in Dublin. Rent a car if you are touring the country.
BrendanJuly 2023
It was challenging at first being a North American, but I got used to it quickly. Not a big deal.
Verified travelerJuly 2023
Be flexible, renting in Ireland can be a nightmare especially with insurance. Choosing a good rental company is very important.
ManuelAug 2023
Driving on the left side can take some getting used to, be carerul. In general it was fine though.
DionAug 2023
Contact your credit card company ahead of time if you plan to leverage the coverage they provide.
Verified travelerJuly 2023
Get an automatic, plan on paying for insurance, and note that extra drivers cost more.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Get a car that is big enough and if from overseas get an automatic.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Just go slow and take your time navigating and it isn’t too bad.
BrendanJuly 2023
Make sure you examine the vehicle before Driving out of the parking lot
Verified travelerJuly 2023
Rent saturday and sunday, seems parking is free there (lives in Dublin2)
Verified travelerAug 2023
Make sure to be careful on the country roads.
GerardJuly 2023
Challenging as in most cities.

Definitely map your exact route back to drop off. Even though we set it up on Google maps I missed the exits 3 times. Give yourself a lot of extra time in Dublin. There is a lot of traffic. Most of my experience driving was outside of the city and it was smooth sailing. No real problems with driving in Ireland it was a nice experience.

If you are used to driving left steering wheel cars it is a good advice to ask for automatic transmission . The drivers in Dublin are very polite and the traffic is moderate . It is a pleasure to drive in such places .

It is fine. Narrow parking

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Dublin

  • The best way to fully experience the joys of Dublin is by car. You will find renting a car is a much simpler way to get around Ireland’s capital city than relying on its hectic public transport system. Plus you benefit from having freedom to discover the best sights at your leisure. Naturally, you’ll want to visit the iconic Guinness Storehouse, which has free parking on nearby Crane Street. Or further afield, less than an hour’s drive outside the city, you’ll find the wonderful gardens of Powerscourt House in County Wicklow.
  • Less than 20 miles from the city center, Dublin Airport offers excellent opportunities for car hire. When you arrive at the Airport, finding the car hire desks could not be easier. If you’re arriving from a regional flight, you’ll find the hire desks in the Arrivals Hall at Terminal 1, or, if you’re on an international flight, you’ll arrive into Terminal 2 and go to the multi-story parking lot to book your hire car.
  • Firstly, you must remember that everyone drives on the left in Ireland and, as Dublin is a small city, you can expect to navigate much smaller roads. To get the best out of your driving experience in and around Dublin, stick to the main routes and avoid shortcuts, as you may get lost. The city is a rabbit warren of one-way and dead-end streets that can outfox even the most experienced drivers.
  • To save you from traffic jams and gridlock, always avoid the Dublin rush hour between 7:30 am and 9 am, and in the evenings around 6:30 pm. It’s also best not to drive near the Liffey River at these busy times. In the darker, winter months, be wary of fog and mist, which can affect driving conditions, as can the frost on higher routes.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Dublin for $30 or less
  • Small hire cars in Dublin are around 59% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about hiring a car in Dublin

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Dublin?

As the majority of Dublin’s streets are narrow or cobbled, it’s best to rent a small car that can easily zip around. You should choose a mini or economy car type for the best driving experience, plus it’ll be much easier to park in the limited spaces around the city -- not to mention the fact that smaller cars are much cheaper to run.

  • What’s the speed limit in Dublin?

Within the city center of Dublin, the default speed limit for roads is 31 mph. This limit remains the same for many of the roads within the city boundary. Be aware of speed cameras at either end of Dublin's Port Tunnel. If you’re traveling outside of the city on National Routes, the limit is 62 mph and on highways the speed limit increases to 75 mph. You will always be notified by sign posts where there is a change of speed limit.

  • Where are the best places to park in Dublin?

Due to the lack of free parking in Dublin, you will have to rely a parking space in one of the many signposted, multi-story parking ramps in the city. However, if you’re visiting on St Patrick’s day (March 17th), parking on the street is free of charge! Most parking lots have a competitive daily rate which depends on which zone you’re in. Hourly rates are between $1.00 and $3.00. However, be careful not to park in forbidden areas because you will be clamped, or even towed away.

  • How much does it cost to hire a car in Dublin?

Car hire companies onsite at Dublin airport include Thrifty, Budget, Alamo, Hertz, National and Avis.

We had clicked upgrade at the very last option but it took away our automatic car unknowingly (which was more expensive and specifically set) when we did and caused lots of issues. Pickup took forever (roughly an hour), drop off was fine. Car was good, but had to drive a manual on the other side of the road which was not ideal. Upgrade didn’t actually upgrade our car class either.

The price was absolutely extortionate. I paid $750 for the rental in July, which was supposed to be fully paid, and when I arrived to pick up the car, I had all my insurance documents on hand, they charged me another €450, then after that, my choices were, pay €6000 deposit, which I never was made aware of and did not have, or lose the money I already paid, or pay another $1650. These were horrible options at 5am. The car that I thought was going to cost $750, actually cost me $2800. I will never rent a car through Kayak or Sixt again in my life. A disgraceful way to treat travellers coming to visit a country. Ruined my vacation and stripped me of all my spending money for my vacation.

During pick up I thought I was attending a circus act! Very unorganized and uncaring group of workers. The lady at the front desk was excellent but the experience after that was chaotic! It took one and a half hrs.to finally get the vehicle we ordered two months earlier. They had the four of us outside standing in a windy cold morning telling us every 10 minutes that the car would be ready in 10 minutes. No bathroom and no place to sit. Very unprofessional!

The car rental company was cooperative But the problem was with Kayak they did not explicitly mentioned that the rate was with out even basic cover so when I went to pick my car up I had to pay for basic cover also which ended up costing me almost double. Will never book again via brokers as they appear cheap but actually they are hiding the fact that insurance is not included.

The insurance situation was absurd. In order to decline their coverage they wanted a 5000 euro deposit and printed paperwork showing you had coverage through some other vendor. The person at the counter acknowledged that our credit card likely provided insurance but was not interested in discussing further. We were just shooed away when we tried to ask questions. This information needs to be clearly explained ahead of time, not on a random cardboard cutout on the desk at time of pickup. Instead you are forced to pay for overpriced third party insurance you don't need.

Didn’t give options for insurance just charged after they wouldn’t give options on car I took Volvo and then we went out to car and saw there were other intermediate cars and went back in and had them give me a different car. Would never use hertz again. They try to rip people off in other countries .

There wasn't alot to like. Once we arrived at the Hertz counter we were told that we would have to pay an additional 50 euros a day for insurance which ended up costing almost as much as the vehicle. I couldn't remember after being awake for 24 hours if I had purchased third party insurance and the guy behind the counter was interested in helping find out. I fact, he made sure to advise us that they would require and $5,000 dollar hold if we did have third party insurance. Once we got fleeced at the check out counter we made our way down to the vehicle where the attendant drove the car up, parked it and threw me the keys. Zero explanation on how the vehicle operated, seats stowed or any of the controls worked. Very unsatisfied with the whole experience.

I was pressured hard to buy Budget car insurance. The agent would not let me take the car until I proved my travel insurance covered the car, was large enough, and was valid in Ireland. I had to call the insurance company to prove. it. He challenged me on each point, The cost for insurance would have been 50% higher than the cost of the car. Very unsettling. If I had not experienced this before I would have fallen for their trap. The car was beat up to begin with. The power plug we found out didn't work so couldn't charge phones and devices. There was only one USB port that was hidden. The cruise didn't work. It had about 135000km.

I was not able to get the car I reserved because an additional $3,000 was going to be held on my card on top of the $1,300 that the car rental and insurance (which I was forced to pay) was going to cost. It was the worst car rental experience I’ve ever had and I will only rent from Sixt and Turo moving forward. They are the only companies that always provide a great rental experience and tell you everything up front so you know what to expect when renting the vehicle.

Europcar charged me for a scrap mark on a tire. 220$ charge. The tire is perfectly functional and I showed the guy an image of the scrape pre-existing my rental from images I took before I accepted the car. He ignored them and told me to appeal. I know full well they just wanted more money from me and assumed I wouldn't do anything because I had to travel the same day. I will never use this company again or recommend them to anyone. Horrible company. And to add fuel to the fire they charged a surprise insurance fee of 1700$ at checkout when I picked up the car. They dont disclose this to you when you make a booking on Kayak.

Pick up what a s*** show, it took nearly two hours, despite early check in and pre reservations. After being talked into an upgrade and quadrupling our original price, we set off! Three hours into the drive we broke down, waited over two hours for roadside assistance in the middle of nowhere with a 4 month old baby, and eventually were told to taxi to our accommodations and that a car would be dropped off to us in the morning. Our accommodations had no potable water, and no cell service. We picked up enough groceries for dinner and breakfast the next morning. After hours back and forth of staff denying that they ever said they would drop us off a car and that we needed to cab to the nearest depot (they couldn’t even book us this cab because we were staying rurally, and again, we had 0 cell service), they finally agreed to drop us off a car. In the end, we went over 24 hours with no vehicle, and 12 without water and food due to Europcar’s negligence. The car they brought us didn’t fit our luggage (the reason we had upgraded was so that our car fit our luggage, and had no GPS (another feature of the original upgrade). Never booking with Europcar again! I highly advise against.

We had a 4 hour drive to our destination. After 1 1/2 hrs the low tire light came on, as well as some other service lights. The van almost stalled, would not accelerate a few different times which was obviously a driving hazard. It was an automatic transmission, so this should not have occurred. When are returned the van after we drove back from the far west coast at the end of the trip, the rental staff was not bothered or concerned. The customer service was horrible and so frustrating.

Pretty terrible. Took forever for their “shuttle” to bring us to their sketchy off-site location. Once there they make you sign a pad as they “explain” the rental contract vs letting you read it, and adding their random fees along the way. When you finally get done you realize the cost is more than 5x what your online booking said it would be, so when you try and refuse the car at that point they say, sorry, you signed a contract (that you havent seen yet) and your only option is to take the car or find a way back to the airport to find other options. Full-size estate car

KAYAK
Charged us a ridiculous amount of money for a 2 mm scratch on the rim of one tire which we claimed was there when we picked up. We didn’t think it at all significant to report at pick up. And now we are being charged for it which was always there.

The credit card hold amount is very high. It appears that is standard for Ireland. Taking the full insurance is a good idea anyway, and lowers the cost. Service was very good all round.

Totally misleading, quoted $125 for the car then pushed us to take a bigger car and wouldn’t accept the insurance we already had. Total got to almost $1,000 after they added their insurance. Cancelled and went with Budget. Got a very nice car with insurance for $600. Stay far away!

The full insurance was expensive, but they still charged me for dammage to the side of one tire.

The wait time at Dublin Airport is ridiculous. The staff push you to upgrade services, like adding unnecessary additional insurance, and to pay more for a car with an automatic. They also said they had photographed the damage on the car, but had not photographed all damage, I insisted they photograph the car completely.

Charged excess fees that weren’t explained up front. Forced to buy insurance, again, if I had known up front it was a requirement I would have been fine with it. Staff was fake-nice, while continually stating I was either misunderstanding what was originally said, or just plain incorrect/making things up. Let’s face it, we all know the bar starts low rental car companies, but I’ll never use Keddy/Eurocar again.

I pay in advance for a full coverage insurance and at the counter for check in they told me that they didn’t accept the insurance I hired and charged me a ridiculous amount for a new insurance. They also charged a different price for the rental. The car was all scratched. Other than that, everything was okay.

Expect to pay double what you originally book for - they’ll find a way to deny whatever insurance coverage you have so that you have to buy theirs
