Driving in Grenada brings its own set of challenges when compared to driving in the UK. Similarly to Britain, driving is on the left. However, the driving style is a bit more reckless than what you might be used to. The roads in Grenada, especially outside the city, have lots of potholes and speed bumps, so you should drive with care. The roads tend to be relatively narrow and blind corners are common, so you should approach turns cautiously. Keep an eye out for livestock and pedestrians on the side of the road too.
To hire a car in Grenada, you must normally be a minimum of 21 years old. However, the age requirement will vary, depending on which car hire company you use. Drivers under 25 will also likely be subject to a young person’s surcharge, whilst there will be age restrictions for certain vehicle categories. To be sure about your car hire agency's policy, you should contact them beforehand. You will need to have your driving licence to hire a car, as well as another form of ID, such as your passport.
Petrol prices in Grenada vary depending on the petrol company and the market conditions. The average petrol prices are about EC$3.35 (£1) per litre, and around EC$12.7 (£3.65) per gallon. It’s important to note that these prices are subject to change, based on a range of factors, such as oil prices, taxes, and local competition. It’s worth noting that the petrol stations tend to be on the outer parts of the island, with there being very few inland.
The speed limits in Grenada change depending on the type of road you’re on. The speed limit in the presence of street lights is 30 mph (48 km/h). This reduces to about 20 mph (32 km/h) in towns and cities. On rural roads without street lights, the top speed you can do is 40mph (65 km/h). Whilst there are only a few speed limit signs on this island, you must use common sense when driving and not exceed the speed limits listed above, or you risk being prosecuted by the police.
