Overview Reviews
Located in Aso, ASO NO SHIKI is a 2-minute drive from Aso Shrine and 8 minutes from Cuddly Dominion. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is great for foreigners as it has four private baths. Two are outside and the other two have windows that open to the outside. One is large enough to accommodate four or more. Food is plentiful. Lots of meat and fish with Aso specialities. You grill your food over a charcoal fire at the table. The hostess came round and gave us free sake which was a nice bonus. Price was very low compared to other ryokans.
Cons: You end up smelling of grilled meat as the dining room has poor ventilation. Breakfast is from 7:30 which made it tight for us to get back to Kumamoto for the train.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It’s really the 4 private onsen baths that make this place worth while.
Cons: Not really near anything....need a car to get somewhere
9.6 Excellent

You can enjoy the Japanese breakfast culture. and the dinner I had saw and smell some of it I think it should be nice too. Next time if I be there I will book the dinner for sure. and the room The futon was very comfy and i love how the decoration of the toilet. Really nice. ETC. I think you gonna love this hotel like I do.
Cons: Nothing. I really love here and want to stay again.

Pros: Very clean, authentic yet modern, onsens were lovely especially the outdoor one. Attention to detail was outstanding. Highly recommend the Japanese dinner. Yukiko Umiko our hostess was very friendly and we appreciated her Japanese packed lunches. Would definitely return.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: - the location is not so good, but we were offered a taxi every day to Aso station - the Japanese house is typical and really offers a change. It is very peaceful and everyone is respectful - very nice staff, different from the Japanese people we had met before - laughing a lot and interested in cultural differences, as foreigners we felt welcome - the restaurant is traditional and very good, the menus are endless! - the bath is simple and relaxing - the heating works well
Cons: - the trash in our room was not picked up, but just asking for it would have sold this :) nothing bad to say, it really is an amazing experience!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The private onsen open 24 hours and no reservation needed. Different style of onsen.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Spent my birthday here and couldn’t have chosen a better place. Wonderful place, very kind and helpful staff and great onsen! Stayed with a friend that has food allergies but they fixed a great dinner and breakfast for her. Food was superb, service was outstanding
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was amazing. From the food, to the staff, to the room (room was at just the perfect temperature throughout our stay), to the amenities (loved the private onsen! Was initially too hot but we could adjust it to our liking. Family onsen that we could book was great too), everything was perfect. Pricey, but worth it, in our opinion. Location's a little out of the way but the staff were always happy to give us a lift to the main Kurokawa Onsen area, making the distance of little inconvenience. In fact, it was nice to be away from the general hustle and bustle.
Cons: -
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Onsen inside the room is very nice and the temperature can be controlled by the guests. Staff of the hotel are very polite and pleasant with happy smile.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff, especially the young staff from Taiwan ! The in-room private onsen is big and wonderful ! A good choice for guests enjoying quiet onsen holiday
Cons: Not many other facilities (but who cares if onsen is the first priority).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! From the minute we drove up we were treated So very special! Since we speak only limited Japanese, our head care taker spoke English and cared for our every need. He was so kind and courteous! Our masonry room was wonderful and we had 2 onsen baths, one inside and one outside. The food was delicious and had gorgeous presentation! They provide a Shuttle bus to drop you off in the village which is close but a bit of a walk!
Cons: We loved everything!!!

Pros: Excellent onsen facilities and spacious room
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good location, nice circumstances. That's topical image of Onsen & Ryokan!
Cons: Basically no dislike for me.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Kurokawa was a knockout destination. It was small and it was a really fun town to stay in. Lots to do in the surrounding area ie the crater and Takachiho gorge. Very beautiful driving around. At Yamabiko there were six different private baths for guests. Three of them overlooking the river. Good amenities ie ice machine. Would definitely stay there again.
Cons: Arrive early as there are very limited restaurant options. Book ahead or arrive with food. We didn’t eat at the restaurant but I believe it has a minor Michelin recommendation.

Sozankyo - Aso - Building
5
8.8 Excellent (519 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Aso, Sozankyo is a 2-minute drive from Hanaasobi Garden and 8 minutes from Cuddly Dominion. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, and coffee/tea in a common area. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A very nice and cosy place with friendly receptionists. Enjoy the night and the dinner in this hotel.
7.5 Good
Pros: Of all the Ryokans we stayed, this was the prettiest according to my family. The bar had a very pretty view of the garden and there is coffee machine that you can make your own free coffee. The dining room and service staff overall were good. The Sake set was yummy.
Cons: My mistake, I did not read / understand when I booked the rooms, that there were no bathing facilities in the room. Hence everyone had to use the onsen (which it was kinda of a problem for some of the people in my group who do not like to use the onsen) My main problem, was the room (per se), as pretty as it was. Sozankyo had actually written to me to advise that the rooms I chose were on different levels, and if I had wanted to change rooms. Of which I replied immeditately (Nov 2018) that I was alright with the higher price and please proceed to change rooms. Upon arriving, I was informed that they overlooked my reply with little to no apology. And because it was the golden week they were fully-booked. Thinking that I should not make a fuss, we agreed to overlook the matter. But little did I know, that this ryokan does not have an elevator and the steps were very steep. Hence being the 3rd floor and having all the facilities on the 1st floor (meals, public baths, etc). So unfortunately, I had to complain to the front desk and they gave us a room on the 2nd level. While I admit the matter was resolved, it did leave me with a bad taste (maybe because I had an EXCELLENT experience the day before at the a different place). Anyway, that is my experience of this place.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very helpful and nice. Room is reasonable size. The private and public onsen are great. Dinner and breakfast are delicious and the set up was beautiful.
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are friendly and helpful. The dinner is delicious.
Cons: NA
7.1 Good
Pros: overall room was good, but a lot of unusable space. the balcony was nice with table and chairs but the view not so nice.
Cons: nothing particularly special especially for the price for the room. buffet breakfast was nothing spectacular again for the price we paid.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Private onsen for booking
Cons: A bit of noise in the room at night
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Magical Onsen (baths with water from hot springs), amazing beautifully presented food and can cater for vegetarians even with about 8 courses at dinner, exceptionally helpful and courteous staff, spacious and extremely high standard of traditional accommodation. Kimono, belt, socks etc. provided for comfort and going to the baths. A wonderful atmosphere of dignity and great attention to detail.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Atmosphere, smell of wood in room, amazing dinner, good bar, good spa.

8.8 Excellent (391 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Ichinoi in Minamioguni (Kurokawa Onsen), you'll be steps from Yamakawa Onsen and a 4-minute drive from Meotodaki Fall. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Transfer from the bus stop to the hotel. Awesome food. Understandable staff. A lot of tea. Not usual 3 small tea bags, but a big one.
Cons: Unexpected 150 yen tax. Come on, can't you put it into the original price? It's not much, but seriously...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutley wonderful experience operated by such a lovely and welcoming family. Amazing authentic Japanaese experience. Only 5 min walk from the centre of kurokawa. Room with a view and the outdoor bath is so peaceful. Be sure to book dinner at the hotel, the most authentic Japanese meal you can have. I will definitely stay here again.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly staff and beautiful surroundings, loved the outdoor onsen in nature.
Cons: Maybe the sinks can be replaced, bit outdated.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Super friendliness of staff Cleanliness Parking lot Very classic Japanese
Cons: Price is high but seems to be a good price compared to the alternatives
7.5 Good
Pros: The food was amazing. So many delicious dishes served so beautifully. Just hard to digest it all before encountering an equally magnificent breakfast! Both an indoor and an outdoor bath on the premises.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Quiet ryokan without many guests, which makes it more relaxed. The staff were very helpful and explained everything for me, who hadn't stayed at a ryokan before. The free transportation to/from the bus stop was a nice extra.
Cons: Location is a bit far from the rest of the ryokans at Kurokawaonsen. If it weren't for the signs, I would have thought I was lost. If you wanted to roam the town in your yukata, probably not a good idea without proper shoes.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Location , Dinner and Breakfast
Cons: Indoor Onsen
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Luna Observatory Auberge Mori No Atelier in Minamiaso, you'll be in the mountains, just steps from Mt. Aso and a 4-minute drive from Shirakawa Springs. Free self parking is available onsite.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The accommodation offered an observatory/star gazing tour. The guide didnt speak too much English but his enthusiasm was contagious. It was a little cloudy that night but I am so grateful that it cleared up later. I saw a shooting star! If you are travelling around the Mt Aso area would definitely recommend this place. P.S if you miss out on booking the dinner at the accommodation, ask reception to recommend a restaurant :)
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The whole experience, very cozy set-up, local fresh food and observatory experience. The staff even went extra mile to provide little surprise gift for everyone during the breakfast.
Cons: Price slightly higher.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Food It felt special its near Mount Aso
Cons: There was cloud cover that meant we were unable to see any stars which was a shame.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Like its name, this is the Observatory theme hotel. There is the Star Observation Tour after dinner and you should not miss it. The dinner and breakfast is great.
Cons: They accept cash only. Should notify guests in advance about this policy.
6.7 Good
Pros: Food and friendliness, helpfulness of staff. This hotel has a charm that is hard to put into words. We have stayed three years ago and came back. The telescope experience was limited as it was a cloudy night.
Cons: Uncomfortable beds. Bathroom very outdated. Perhaps a short explanatory sheet in English about the telescope experience. We have stayed st the hotel before and as we were the only ones booked for the telescope experience it was done in English.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Highly hospitality staff. The star tour was fascinating. My son was shocked by the huge telescope. Delicious local fresh food.
Cons: The car navigation failed to show us the correct location but had to rely on google map
7.5 Good
Pros: quaint and rustic place. pls try to check in on Sunday for a special treat of some classical music performances.
4.6 Okay
Pros: The only saving grace about this place is the western fine dining dinner and maybe the observatory if you are lucky to have a clear night.
Cons: The room is pathetically small. There is not even space to lay our luggage flat for packing. The toilet and bathroom were so tiny that you can hardly turn (so expect to walk in and then reverse back to get out). The bed mattress is as hard as cement. It is much worse than on a tatami in a traditional Ryokan. I have to use the blanket as extra bed lining to be able to get to sleep, else it is hurting my bones. There are water seepage marks at the wall paper and the room is not tidy or clean. They only have 2 private onsen (actually small room with a bathtub of hot water) and we are only given 30 mins per room. I have a family of 4, we have to take turns to shower and dip, as the kids are teenager. They should have given us 2 slots for 4 pax! Not considerate at all. The worst is that they only accept CASH. This was not stated in the booking information! So we run out of cash after paying a big sum for our stay and had to draw on our credit cards. So, fine yourself a better place and not risk trying this hotel. Looks/photos can be deceiving.
6.3 Good
Pros: Great experience staying in this little cottage!
Cons: Overpriced and bed comfort is way too hard!
7.9 Good
Cons: No lift and Pay Cash only

Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved the atmosphere, the food, the baths, the staff... Great place to stay.
Cons: Nothing, loved everything.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Silenced place with traditional Japanese style building. Private and public onsen both in hotel. Both traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast are tasted with famous beef and tofu.
Cons: Location is so hidden. Suitable for driving. No private bathroom.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very kind and welcoming and the baths divine, both the private and outdoor public ones. The ryokan itself is very beautiful and atmospheric. The spectacular Japanese breakfast more than made up for missing dinner.
Cons: It was more difficult to get to the ryokan than we had anticipated but that was because we had been told we could get a train there. So we were a bit stressed when we got there. Because of the language barrier we hadn't pre-ordered a meal and the village did not have a great selection of restaurants.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very supportive and some of them spoke English well. The breakfast was very good and the outdoor onsen was very special. The build and room had the very traditional old Japanese building style. We found at 10 min walk a e-bicycle rental near Hanaasobi Rose Garden.
Cons: We travelled without a car, had not booked dinner in the hotel and were faced with almost all restaurants nearby closed in the evening (late October).
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice Japanese atmosphere and deco. Simple and pleasant.
Cons: Breakfast time 8:30am too early for us.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Very clean and staff were very nice.
Cons: Nothing

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Private onsen for guest to enjoy. A dinning table with chairs at open space with microwave oven for guests to use.
Cons: No cover between the hotel building and private onsens and you get wet walking between them during raining time. There is no wifi in the room.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We pay extra for the dinner package. The dinner was excellent. Cant remember the exact cost but probably more than Yen10,000 for the dinner/breakfast for 2.
Cons: The bath facility is outside the accomodation building. We went during autumn so it is ok, but definitely wouldn't want to be staying here in winter.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were blown away by this beautiful property. The staff were so friendly and helpful (despite us knowing no Japanese!) and even accommodated a last minute request for late check in. We particularly loved the bath houses and wonderful clean and warm onsen.
Cons: I have nothing negative to say about this property, it was great.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff. Convenient location especially for trains and buses. Wonderful area to visit and great base.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean
6.7 Good
Pros: Nice welcome, nice japanese room
Cons: 1) When we came back from dinner, our room couldn‘t be opened due to a damaged door-lock. Nobody in GH, it took us 2 hours past midnight, to solve that. Those things may happen. But it is not acceptable, that the host knew about the lock-problem before and didn‘t repair it !!! 2) Even with Nav and map-code it was hard to find. No sign in the neighborhood.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: a rusric country with friendly atmosphere.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: I felt comfortable at Guest House Asora. The hostess has contributed to this, giving me a lot of information about the region. One evening she cooked for me and other guests. Just like a friendly gesture. Also her very nice coworker gave me specific tips and took me to a family village festival. She also showed me the way to the remote restaurant, run by the owner of the guest house. Also good food there!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: So nice to stay in a ryokan where they really look after you. They were very welcoming when we arrived and didn't seem to mind our noisy children. The traditional breakfast was great and so much food. The family onsen was also really lovely.
Cons: They should have a bit more information about how to travel around the local area. There are local buses but we had to look up the info on line so if they could have some timetables on hand that would be great for those that don't speak Japanese and aren't driving.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Traditional atmosphere Cocooning room So many attentions (lighting a candle in he room after dinner for example) Excellent food
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Rustic and charming and the room was warm and cozy. Very nice staff. Comfortable bed. Outside bath and shower was great and beat enjoyed when not raining but offered private bath by the staff which was great!

Cons: The room we stayed was pretty cold at night. The heater couldn't warmed up the room enough. May be due to the building aging and not enough insulation.

Cons: The booking was impossible to find as the sign on the road had a completely different name. This needs to be rectified
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Owner was excellent and friendly. :)
7.5 Good
Pros: Very nice host, welcoming. The room is actually a small cottage house made of wood. Has kitchen facilities, a bath and a bathroom. Sleeping on a mat on the floor (still can't get why japanese like it so much- why not invest in a real bed..). Take into account you need a car to get here.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely, lovely, lovely hosts, always with a smile and so helpful with anything and everything. The chalet was spacious, clean and light.
Cons: You’ll get a little noise from the other cottages on the site at times. Also, the name change meant we took a little longer to find it.
6.7 Good
Pros: Lovely place. Great to be able to unwind and spend time in such a beautiful area. It was an ideal location for going to the rugby in Oita but also for visiting the onsen in Kurokawa. Despite the negatives, we enjoyed our stay here and would recommend.
Cons: There was hardly any consideration for Western needs. No knives or forks, no furniture at all - despite the confirmation stating that futons were in place. It was sit on the floor, or outside on the deck... There was also nowhere to put any clothing - we had to use our suitcase. I know, most travellers do, but we were there for 3 nights and moving around Japan, so it would've been nice to be able to sort our stuff...

8.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a room with our own onsen on the balcony, which was fabulous! We had a lovely view of Aso and the mountains and it was very private. It was also great to sit out there and enjoy morning coffee. The room was also very clean.
Cons: The room is a little tired and could do with some renovation. Some art work in the rooms to brighten them up a bit would also be nice. We paid quite a high price in comparison with other properties we stayed at in Japan.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very good prepared for families with small kids.

5.1 Okay
Pros: The Onsen (spa) was quite nice. It was very quiet.
Cons: We took this hotel because everything else was booked out. We didn't know that it is a golf hotel and that it is very far from the actual town Aso. The staff had no clue about activities outside the hotel and could hardly speak any English. This hotel is good if you are above 50, have a car and want to play golf. Otherwise it's too far away from town and has very poor connection to public transport.
6.7 Good
Cons: Beds were very uncomfortable and hard to sleep on.
6.7 Good
Pros: Onsen
Cons: Room too small, the dinner was too expensive because the time of our group was second round with less food,
6.0 Good
Pros: Hotel located in a park like golf club. Quiet natural setting.
Cons: Hotel's dinner was buffet style. A rather high price vs overall quality. Rather strange elementary school style plates. Famed beef was a bit too well done and disappointing really as compared to a previous restaurant. Arrived at hotel about 1:15p. Attempted to check in and drop off bags before sightseeing. Were directed to an area to wait for someone to inform when check in was ready. After 20 minutes in uncomfortable chairs, further inquiry informed need to wait for another 90 minutes until 3:00pm. It's the official time and no one is allowed to check in before that time.... Poor communications at it's best.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Love the onsen, especially the outdoor onsen, and the green surroundings (It has a golf course!)
Cons: A little away from everything so driving is necessary to get to shops, restaurants.
7.1 Good
Pros: The views is nice for photo taking.
Cons: The staff didn't give a correct information on the Onsen facilities and the timing of the opening. We need to find out ourselves.
7.1 Good
Pros: Quiet
Cons: Far from main road
9.2 Excellent
Cons: Hot spring is not clean. There are bugs inside.
7.1 Good
Pros: The dinner is really amazing. It worth the money.
Cons: The room is too small. Only one staff can communicate in English. The pajama for us going to the hot spring is really terrible. It is a blouse and trouser suit look like what a workman worn. Only one size is offered despite different size of customers. Even worse, only one suit is offered for each hotel customer. We are not allowed to replace a clean one with our dirty one on hand.
6.7 Good
Pros: The onsen is great, rooms are spacious, the breakfast buffet with panoramic view on the caldera is very nice. Also, the hotel is located quite close to the road up to the crater of the volcano.
Cons: The staff at the reception weren't as friendly as we are used to in Japan. In fact, they came across as a bit arrogant. Only the people working in the restaurant and cleaning were friendly and polite. Also, there was a distinct seventies vibe in the building. Not particularly homy. As I read later on Tripadvisor, one of the guests described it as 'slightly institutional'. Maybe that's the right description for this hotel.
