Top tips for hiring a car at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport

  • Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) is the main airport servicing the island of Sicily and is one of the most convenient places to get a hire car. As it is a major airport there are many car hire companies for you to choose from. The service desks are located very close to the airport terminal with vehicles on-site. Additionally, most companies are open between 08:00 and 11:00 and have after-hours pickup and returns.
  • Getting a car hire at Catania Fontanarossa Airport is a good alternative to public transport. Sicily has beautiful landscapes that can be best explored at your own pace with a car. The roads are well kept and it is easy to get out of the airport and right into the thick of the island, especially if you are travelling with many passengers which can cause public transport costs to add up quickly.
  • During your time in Sicily you may wish to travel to some of the surrounding islands. Various providers will have different rules around whether you can take your Catania Fontanarossa Airport car hire onto the ferries or not. It may differ depending on which island you are travelling to and could require extra insurance. Hertz, for example, allows all its vehicles onto ferries. If extra insurance is not required, make sure you know which type of cover includes ferry travel so you know if you are covered.
  • Numerous providers will have different policies regarding returning your car hire to Catania Fontanarossa Airport. Read through your agreement carefully and ask any questions when you pick up your vehicle. Most companies will allow you to drop off your vehicle outside of their opening hours by placing the keys and paperwork in a drop box. However, some will need you to return the car during opening hours so they can check it for any damages. Larger companies may allow you to return your vehicle at a different location if you are leaving via an alternative airport or ferry.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport for $52 or less
  • Book your car hire at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport

  • Where are the service desks located?

The service desks for car hire at Catania Fontanarossa Airport are conveniently located just outside the exit at the front of the airport. All of the providers are located in this building. The majority of providers are located along the main road directly outside the airport. Once the staff have gone over your paperwork and payment details, they will direct you to one of the nearby parking lots where you can pick up your car.

  • What vehicles are available?

There are a wide range of vehicles available. For those looking for a smaller car, minis and compact cars will likely be the best choice. For something in between, standard cars are available in a range of models and for those who need lots of space, there are options for SUVs and passenger vans.

  • What documentation is required?

To hire a car in Italy you will need both your usual driver's licence and an international driver's licence. You will also need to present your passport and credit card when you pick up your hire car. You will usually need to make a deposit with your credit card. Make sure that you have this documentation ready to go and easily available to help your pick-up process go as quickly and smoothly as possible.

  • When is the best time to return a car hire?

Sicily is a very popular tourist destination and CTA is the main airport servicing the island so it can get quite busy. Sundays and Thursdays are the quietest days, and it is generally the least busy in the early morning and early afternoon throughout the week. I was quoted a higher price in person than I was when i reserved the through a secondary service. I was then told the car wouldn’t be ready for another hour even though they had a car available for me when I received the direct quote. I was given a car with significant exterior damage. Avis accused me of contributing to the existing damage after my return of the vehicle and charged me an additional $2.7K for an originally $300 rental. Horrible customer service.

Worst car rental experience I’ve ever had. They gave away my car that I had reserved because I had to wait in their own line that took 2 HOURS. The man was rude and said it was our own fault we has to wait in line 2 hours. Then trying charging us double the online price. Budget at catania airport is the biggest scam I’ve ever experienced and I’m so happy we just said no to the car and figured it out on our own.

Excellent except that airport office didn’t open until 8 am and we arrived at 7. Also, they had misplaced our reservation so it meant that the agent had to work it out. He did that nicely but it took a while, causing us and those in the long line to wait a very long time. So, excellent agent and car but poor agency service.

Check in went well and was easy. The car I was given had a number of dents and scratches. When I spoke to the agent, he assured me that all the damage was noted on the contract that was handed to me. Despite this, I took pictures and a video of the car at pick up. Unfortunately, because of an early flight, we had to use the key drop box and were not able to return the car to a live agent (so that we could confirm there was no new damage). Again, I took pictures and a video of the car just in case. A couple of hours after dropping off the car, I received an e-mail telling me there was new damage for which I would be charged. The picture they sent shows damage that is not there in my pictures or video. We decided to go with Hertz because we thought it was a reputable company. However, we were left disappointed. Now, we have to spend our time and energy disputing these additional charges.

Intermediate estate car

KAYAK
The car itself was average. There was a hidden “drop fee” of 500 Euros for a one-way rental that was not mentioned at all until I was stuck there at the rental counter. That is outrageous.

KAYAK
This booking I made on Kayak said it was for Locauto, which is a great reputable company, but when I received the booking info from Expedia it was changed to B-Rent which is not a good reputable company and is well known for scams. Upon arriving to the B-Rent office in Catania airport, they validated they were not a good company and refused me rental as I did not present an international drivers license. I told them that the policy on the kayak and expedia paperwork I was sent said B-Rent accepts regular drivers licenses as long as it is written in English. They said they didn’t want to take the risk. B-Rent changes policies and doesn’t update the paperwork booked by renter. I am in process of getting a refund by Expedia and this was a complete disaster.
