Turned out that I rented a car that was too small for all the luggage that we had and they gave me a free upgrade although it wasn’t clean but that was OK. Drop off they had someone help us with our luggage and we were able to get to the airport with their shuttle right away. He was very helpful and friendly.

Shuttle from the airport to Europcar and back was ok. The car was dirty and full of sand inside, the tires were pretty flat from the start. You have to take your own video walking around the car detecting issues before you leave.

Europcar now requires an international driver’s license for US license holders - this was not advertised anywhere and almost caused a total disaster for our trip. Kayak needs to do a better job making this requirement clear if it applies.

I was not provided a detail of charges at the drop off. They said the detail will be available later. Then my credit card got hit with a $700 charge instead of $330. No email detailing the charges ever arrived. I am calling fraud department and disallowing the charge.

After waiting several hours, it seemed like the people ahead of me weren't getting cars. I was still in line with at least another hour to go. Eventually I decided to rent a car from another company.

Big warning if you are international and are offered an electric car make sure you have access to the App Store of the country you are in. Also if you get an EV insure where ever your staying there is an agreement about charging.

Check in was understaffed and the car was much smaller than the 5 person 3 bag on the website. It took a while (3 hours) but they did end up providing a larger car for the same price.

We were very pleased with the upgraded vehicle we rented, however the pick up was absolutely ridiculous. We arrived 15 minutes ahead of pur reservation time yet were placed 18th in the "queue". We were forced to wait nearly 2 hours to get our car despite having already booked in advance online. This was the low point of our trip. It cost us valuable time ahead of a long day of driving. Very, very bad service by the Hertz affiliates in Edinburgh. To be fair, the Hertz staff were friendly and doing their best, but there just were not enough staff members available to keep up with the volume of customers.

This was supposed to be a budget deal, but 3 days ended up costing well over $1000 Aus. The "Dollar" franchise in Edinburgh was operated by Hertz, who bent over backwards to help sort everything out, but "budget" it wasn't.
