I don’t think this experience could have possibly been any better. The pick-up desk is immediately outside the baggage claim. The car was ready, the agent was ready, professional and super courteous. The car was exactly as advertised. Highly recommended!!!!

Rental was actually with Hertz, not ThriftyPick up and drop off is inside the airport, in the arrivals area, and they brought the car to a lot within a short walk from there. The price for a compact car was lower than the private companies on the island, and I didn't have to leave them my passport of course. This rental was actually with Hertz, not Thrifty, so I had some difficulty finding the right desk to go to. As far as I can tell, Thrifty doesn't have a desk in the Ko Samui airport. Fortunately calling the number on the reservation forwarded me to the Hertz desk, and I eventually found them. Once I got there everything went smoothly, and they had all the info from my Kayak reservation.

Car hire excess insurance in Koh Samui

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some Koh Samui car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in Koh Samui.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Koh Samui car rental.

Top tips for hiring a car in Koh Samui

  • To call Koh Samui a tropical paradise is no exaggeration. The largest island in Thailand’s Chumphon Archipelago, Koh Samui has kilometres of sparkling coastline, waterfalls, temples and rainforests to explore. From Laem Yai Beach in the north to the tiny beaches of the Samui South Coast, you’ll find one of the most well-developed road systems in the region. This makes car hire in Koh Samui a great way to explore the island on your own schedule.
  • Samui International Airport (USM) has both a domestic and an international terminal. Both lead to a main arrivals hall, where you will find car hire kiosks for companies like Avis, Sixt, Budget, Thrifty and more. Picking up your Koh Samui car hire at the airport is a convenient option, as this is precisely where you’ll need to go when you leave the island. However, it’s a good idea to book online ahead of time to ensure you're able to get the vehicle specifications you want.
  • You’ll need to have an International Driver’s Licence to be eligible for car hire in Koh Samui. While the road quality is quite good compared to other islands in the region, you should still be prepared to find some potholes and difficult sections of road. For this reason, it’s a good idea to have insurance for your Koh Samui car hire.
  • There can be a wide variety of hazards on the road in Koh Samui, from stray dogs to massive tropical storms. Even after a storm has passed, there will often be a lot of sand, water and debris on the roads, making safe driving more difficult. You won’t find much by way of street lights, so it’s important to take extra care when driving at night. If you think a person or animal might be about to step out in your path, slow down and don’t be shy about giving a short, friendly beep of the horn.

  • If you plan on sticking to the coastal roads around popular resorts like The Passage Samui Villas & Resort or Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort, then a compact car may be all you need. However, if you’d like to venture inland to explore Namtok Tar Nim & Magic Garden, Wat Khunaram temple or waterfalls like Tartan Waterfall or Mountain Waterfall, then a 4X4 may be a better option. This will make the steep inland roads a lot easier. If you’ll be exploring the coast more extensively, a 4X4 will also help with sandy tracks and difficult sections of road.

  • In the built-up areas of Koh Samui, you may find speed limits of 40 km/h, 45 km/h or 60 km/h. You’ll probably also notice that many of the locals don’t stick to these limits. However, when you’re getting car hire in Koh Samui, it’s essential to follow all posted speed limits. Once you’re on major roads like Route 4169 or Route 4170, the speed limit can get up to 90 km/h or more. However, the condition of these roads and traffic density varies greatly, so it’s important to keep an eye out for signs and drive to the conditions.

  • Fuel prices in Koh Samui can vary quite substantially, with lows of around ฿ 24 (A$ 1.02) per litre and highs of around ฿ 35 (A$ 1.50) per litre. At most of the service stations, you will find friendly attendants who will fill up the tank for you. To ensure you get a fair price, it’s a good idea to remind yourself of the average price per litre and keep an eye on the gauge as your tank is filling up.

  • For the most part, parking is free in Koh Samui, and since there generally aren’t any traffic wardens, people tend to park wherever they can fit in. This can make it difficult to find a parking spot in high-traffic areas, like Chaweng Noi Beach. At some of Koh Samui’s most popular attractions, like Grandfather's Grandmother's Rocks, you may have to pay a small parking fee. However, it’s rarely more than around ฿ 20 (A$ 0.85).
