Driving in Luxembourg is relatively easy, with modern road networks in and out of the main cities as well as standard international signs and regulations that mirror other countries within the EU. You must drive on the right side of the road, like in the U.S. If you’re visiting during the winter months, handling your vehicle can be more challenging due to icy weather. Be sure to always wear a seat belt, and any children under the age of 3 must be in child seats.
If you want to rent a car in Luxembourg, you have to be at least 23 years old. The driver must present a valid driver’s license that has been held for one year or more. If you are a young tourist who intends to drive in Luxembourg, an International Driver's Permit (IDP) is required because the minimum age to obtain an IDP is 18. Drivers under the age of 25 are subject to a young driver levy imposed by agencies.
Gas prices in Luxembourg can be quite expensive in comparison to the U.S. You can buy gas for around €6.20 ($6.42) per gallon and €1.64 ($1.70) per liter. Gas stations are readily available in the city and out on the open roads, so you won’t have much issue filling up, and with the short distances to cover, hopefully you won’t have to buy gas too often.
When driving in Luxembourg, within the city limits of the capital, the highways, and roads in the countryside, it’s important to keep within the strict speed limits. Speed cameras and local police are always on the lookout for speed violations, and the penalty points system applies to both locals and tourists. The urban speed limit is 50 km/h (31 mph), for rural roads it’s 90 km/h (56 mph), and on highways you can drive up to 130 km/h (80 mph).
