Clow Beck House - Darlington - Building

9.8 Excellent (119 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Clow Beck House in Darlington, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Blackwell Grange Golf Club and Paddock Farm Nursery & Water Gardens. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Clow Beck is charming, full of character and had lovely grounds and garden. The owners David and Heather were very welcoming and helpful and willing to accommodate for any dietary or special requests. I appreciated the uniqueness of the property which made it interesting. The location was excellent, close by Rockliffe Hall Golf Course and my accommodation was spotlessly clean. I also enjoyed an evening meal, which started with pre-dinner drinks on the patio, followed by dinner in the Clow Beck dining room. Produce was deliciously fresh and local as I witnessed hand delivery of freshly picked vegetables from a local producer that very day. I’ve discovered a little gem.
Cons: A softer mattress would suit me better, but that’s individual needs. Despite this, I would stay again when I am next in the area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good sized room, very clean and comfortable. A warm welcome and a delicious breakfast. We especially enjoyed the homemade apricot and nut bread!
Cons: Could have done with a magnifying mirror in the bathroom... but everything else you could possibly want was available!

7.5 Good
Pros: Top marks for the evening food - the fish and chips we had on the Friday night and the steak and ale pie on Saturday was delicious. There was a lot of variety as well. Breakfast was pretty standard though and I've had better although the lady was quick to serve us. The car park was large and the location was superb with good views.
Cons: Although staff were busy this weekend we were waiting a long time for the barman to take our pre-ordered meal selection at 7pm on Saturday night. I understand the idea behind booking your evening meal beforehand in different time slots but waiting 15 minutes just to get served is just ridiculous. The rooms were ok although TV perhaps a little small.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is great for walking and cycling. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. Plenty of parking space and good quality food in the bar.
7.5 Good
Pros: great breakfast

10.0 Excellent
Pros: everything. i was better than expected. will be back there soon
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location and superb food. Friendly, yet professional & efficient staff. First class service. Welll appointed large twin room with beams and small but perfectly formed en suite High spec fixtures & fittings. Charming olde worlde building with endless niches and landings. A real touch of class in luxurious surroundings.
Cons: Only milk for hot drinks in fridges up and down several stairs on various landings around higgledy piggledy hotel. If fridges not possible in rooms then easier, cheaper and fresher to keep Uht milk sachets in all rooms! Noisy at first and initial view of annexe rooves disappointing as chose back of hotel for fell views and peace and quiet! But selected room with twin beds so perhaps above limited in this respect.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location
Cons: Rooms were a little bit tired.

Pros: all very good
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was spacious and comfortable and had a lovely view. The shared sitting room with communal fridge was a bonus. I liked the fact that whether intentionally or not, they were promoting green values by offering fresh milk in glass bottles rather than disposable plastic pots, the biscuits in our room were presented in a jar and the toiletries were in full size bottles rather than single use individual ones. The food was delicious. We loved the peaceful location and would definitely stay here again.
Cons: Nothing, we loved our stay.

Pros: Very comfortable, good shower, very friendly staff , excellent breakfast. Amazing view to wake up to, even without sunshine.
Cons: Dinner service very slow because of big party in dining room and had to wait 3/4 hour to find out the kitchen had run out of what I ordered - by which time it was late and I wasn't hungry any more so settled for a bowl of soup. But the soup was delicious, the cost removed from bill and chef very apologetic.

Pros: Got upgraded to a suite
Cons: weather
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Lovely location, history of the property.
Cons: Long wait for breakfast. One member of staff had a bad / unfriendly attitude. The rest were brilliant.
6.3 Good
Pros: Very friendly and attentive staff. Outside and grounds beautiful as was location. Excellent food and breakfast.
Cons: Room was very disappointing. Was shabby and not very clean. The carpet was worn and not fitted well and in places was a trip hazard. The toilet seat was broken and there was mould around the window. The bed cover had stains on the reverse and one of the duvet covers was torn.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely and helpful reception staff and restaurant staff. We had fresh milk for our tea tray when we asked and extra biscuits
Cons: The restaurant was lovely and the food was great BUT it was over run with flies, the second night we actually requested to eat in the lounge area as the night before and at breakfast it was really not nice with flies everywhere. Also the Danish pastries available for breakfast both mornings looked lovely but they were uncovered and had flies in them. It was such a shame because our overall experience was great.
7.3 Good
Pros: Beautiful setting. Spacious rooms and bathroom. Authentic castle atmosphere and decorations. Good food, available all day and evening. It was the perfect setting for our family.
Cons: The beds were very hard, I ended up sleeping on the sofa. I've had back surgery and a hip replacement and could not bear to lie on this hard mattress, felt like concrete. The staff said they would bring up another duvet for me to lie on but it never appeared, so I had 3 sleep-deprived nights.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All staff were very friendly and attentive without being a pain. The property was very clean and bed very comfortable. Great place to stay.
Cons: Nothing to dislike for me.

Pros: Castle was beautiful, grounds well kept, staff all excellent and friendly
Cons: Our room was very small, no tea or coffee, very cramped in bathroom definitely not worth £115 we paid
10.0 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely breakfast
7.5 Good
Pros: The beds were comfy and showers were hot. Set in a beautiful location. Great packed lunch!
Cons: Breakfast. It was poorly organised. Queued for 20 mins, up alongside people trying to eat. Confined space. Friends told nothing ready after queuing, went outside and returned to queue another 15 mins. No sausages for us, son doesn’t like bacon so very little choice, Luke warm and no coffee available. Had to ask and wait for glasses and cutlery. Worst breakfast experience I’ve had on the coast to coast and probably ever. Staff working very hard but just appeared to be no clear process. Our friend has worked in hospitality and could identify there wasn’t any prep/plan it all seemed very reactive. Such a shame. The shower would have been better with a stool to put things on. Instead, broken extractor fan meant clothes on hooks got wet as the steam made the walls wet. Stools work well at barn farm camping (Peak District) still basic but very effective for this reason!
7.5 Good
Pros: The location was excellent, right in the middle of the Dales. Very good value for money. Beds were comfortable. Staff were very friendly. Kitchen available for cooking etc. Cups, plates etc to use as well.
Cons: Unfortunately the road was closed just before the hostel and had we known this we would have made travel plans around this. It meant a long detour of approx. 40 miles. One member of staff we asked about the road closure was unaware!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent hostel in lovely location with everything required for a nights stay. Added bonus was good food and nice bottle of wine and couple of beers for the boys. Breakfast was amazing more than exceeded our expectations.
Cons: Only the weather unfortunately it poured with rain.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: It was fabulous! Staff super friendly, spectacular views and great accommodation. Thank you!
6.3 Good
Pros: Staff were brilliant. Kind and professional.
Cons: Bit isolated. I didn’t expect that for from village when I booked. I guess, I have to work on mapping for next time . Overall was good.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice hostel with gorgeous views.
Cons: Other guests had brought dogs which meant some parts smelt a bit like wet dog.
7.5 Good
Pros: its a lovley place lovley staff could do with a fresh paint nd make over we went six year ago nd it was all freshly decorated but thimk it needs doing again apart from that its a nice place
Cons: paint? work inside apart from that very good
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fun for the kids to play out side and be safe nice and relaxing for adults
Cons: Nothing
4.5 Okay
Pros: The staff were helpful and cheerful and doing their best. It’s absolutely not their fault! The drying room was very powerful and we were able to use the washing machine.
Cons: Stuck out on it’s own on the moor road (up a blooming great hill) this hostel building has obviously been struggling for years before the recent flooding disaster just made things worse. Without considerable investment to bring it up to spec the building will just limp along as an isolated inhospitable dark and dingy labyrinth of decaying rooms. It’d probably make a lot of sense to shut it. A hostel located on the actual Coast to Coast route especially in a building where it’d be possible to create a pleasant outdoorsy atmosphere would be a lot more popular I’m sure.

5.8 Okay
Pros: Food excellent, room grotty and needs decorating. Window not sealed and can see daylight and hear street noise
Cons: Staff were lovely but hotel owner never spoke during breakfast, never asked about our stay and didn’t have the courtesy to say good morning or goodbye. As a hotel inspector of 18yrs I found this quite rude. Beverage supplies in our room were limited and after running out of coffee requested more and were handed two portions (one each). We felt the need to call at a local shop and purchase a jar.

8.8 Excellent
Cons: Very loud and intrusive music in public rooms
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable and convenient
7.5 Good
Pros: the breakfast was very good, and although it is cooked fresh we still thought that 45 minutes for a porridge was excessively long.
Cons: I know that this was an old building, a lift to the third floor would have been a welcome addition. the room was very stuffy and the shower was either very hot or very cold.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The room was comfortable, clean and well presented. Lovely bathroom with an efficient shower. Staff were very pleasant, cheerful and helpful. The food was excellent, I had a lovely dinner first evening and breakfast was very good both days, especially the scrambled and poached eggs.
Cons: There was a lot of noise in the evening/late evening from loud music, people talking outside the hotel and cars revving. Also, early Sat morning when the market is setting up (4.30am).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Love the style and the feel of the hotel,I’m right in the centre of Richmond. The food in the restaurant was excellent, and very helpful staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ambience was lovely staff very friendly and only to willing to help , we had to leave early which meant missing breakfast not a problem we were provided bacon and egg rolls to take away and they were lovely. Would highly recommend in fact we are going back for a few days stay and Also when wee attend the next event.
Cons: Nothing I didn’t lije
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic location on the market square.
Cons: Appeared somewhat understaffed on the day we were there, with the consequence that some of the staff were understandably flustered and overloaded with customer orders. On the hottest day of the year (the second hottest in UK recorded history), the towel rail in the en suite bathroom was running at full heat. Unable to switch off; an issue that apparently several other guests had to wrestle with.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice spacious hotel with good communal space
Cons: The food was terrible. For a hotel of this Calibre it was a real disappointment.

Pros: The staff were great from start to finish of my visit... Standards were good... Food was very good... Location was good too...
Cons: To be truthful there isn't anything not to like... I would say limited parking spaces...
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very welcoming. Offered a bed for our dog( we had bought our own ), allowed us to keep the dog with us whilst eating breakfast. Brilliant position in the town. Did just what we were looking for. Our friend who travels through Richmond every year en route to the Edinburgh festival, last visited T B L for a pint 40 years ago.....will be coming again next year. Good secure parking too.
Cons: No complaint

10.0 Excellent

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location perfect
Cons: Needs a facelift but perfectly acceptable
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff very good able to do washing for a reasonable price which is a big thing when travelling
Cons: Had trouble finding the car park as the front door is on a pedestrian only road
7.5 Good
Pros: It was situated in a great location for where we wanted to travel to the next day. The restaurant food was fantastic, and plentiful. Highly recommend the steak and ale pie. Also, would seem to be very dog friendly. Although we didn’t have a dog, there seemed to be a few in the pub. Didn’t bother us at all, but thought it was worth noting.
Cons: The room we was given overlooked the town. This meant that it was incredibly noisy throughout the night. Unfortunately we chose the weekend of a music festival. We were told any other weekend it’s normally very quiet. The only other thing really was the bed, albeit a double, was fairly small.
5.5 Okay
Pros: Excellent breakfast and friendly staff
Cons: Room was pokey, very out of date and not value for money.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: breakfast was very good and the location was perfect.

6.3 Good
Pros: Comfortable bed.
Cons: Too much furniture squashed into the bedroom. The TV was too big for the size of room. The squares on the carpet and chairs made it fell like a set from The Prisoner.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very polite staff, very helpful and good service all around
Cons: The prices of the drinks, £5 for a bottle of water but it is expected
9.3 Excellent

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff was incredible and the room was lovely.
Cons: How creaky the hotel was. It couldn't be helped as it's an old building but each floor board creaked very loudly. When upstairs walked around it was very loud and woke my baby up. But that's no ones fault.

5.8 Okay
Pros: Staff friendly
Cons: View was to back courtyard , kitchen etc . Rooms were extremely warm and quite small .
6.3 Good
Pros: The outside seating area was nice, especially in the sunshine.
Cons: The hotel seemed a little dated and could do with an update. This includes the leisure club and pool. Everything worked but it was all a bit tired looking. The room was absolutely boiling and when we mentioned it on check out, we were told the heating was actually on! There were weddings both nights we were there, which we would have appreciated being told about. There were no major disturbances but when we were having dinner on the 2nd night the doors to the terrace were open where the wedding party were gathered and it was a bit noisy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: this was booked as a mini honeymoon from my mam and her partner they had never seen the place but we loved it so relaxing and lovely walks around very enjoyable thank-you
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Golf course was excellent.

Cons: The grounds( gardens) were lovely. Food was outstanding in the restaurant and the blonde lady on reception was excellent.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Wedding we attended
Cons: The room was over hot windows would only open slightly no fan
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: The view of the golf course
Cons: The room was boiling hot, there was no fan unless you asked. No one told us the room was hot. The spa needs a lot of work, rust on the doors, extremely high levels of chlorine in the spa pool. The gym equipment was falling apart. The breakfast wasn’t included and we didn’t get an compensation for the absolutely terrible time we had. Ruined romantic weekend away but a boiling hot old massively over priced hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every thing great all round customers service
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Really enjoyed the stay, lovely building, very clean and tidy. Stayed in room number 3 very spacious with great facilities. Would stay again could not fault
Cons: Only issue from the staff side of the stay, the staff at the Stables bar let the stay down slightly. Younger member of staff was rather rude and had poor customer service skills. Made myself and my friend feel slightly uncomfortable, however it did not ruin the stay.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Good size clean room
Cons: The restaurant was poor and disorganised.

Pros: Good parking. Good bedroom and ensuite shower layout. Adequate breakfast.
Cons: No one at reception for half an hour at 8-30pm. No air conditioning in bedroom air circulation unit not working. Very hot in room. Couldn't keep the window open because of the traffic noise. Neither of the lights worked on the dressing table. Our key card wouldn't work initially and had to go down two floors to reception to get it to work. All very poor, especially as we arrived about 8-30 PM, exhausted after an 150min drive the last part in a raging storm! Nice hotel but not impressed. Also £8 each for a glass of wine was the last straw!! Mike Reeves & Patricia Spicer. Room 217. Aug 4th - 5th. 2019.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly reception staff that were knowledgable and very helpful, the bar staff also very friendly and served with a smile. When we managed to get in for dinner on the second evening the food was delicious and good value
Cons: Because the hotel caters for weddings and other parties, it was impossible to eat in the restaurant on our first evening ( they said we would have to wait until 9 pm ) as the kitchen gives priority to the party goers before the normal guests.
