I prefer a vehicle that is elevated off ground. That is why I chose a van given the fact that I would be travelling over gravel road I felt more secure. This of course, applies to people who travel to more rule areas Away from the centre of Edmonton and the immediate area. Such as myself.

In the winter, try to get a car with winter tires. Watch out for the traffic circles, they are a different experience. The grid pattern of the streets makes it easy to orient yourself and to get around. There aren't very many bridges going across the river.

Driving in Edmonton is nice. Streets are wide. Be aware most people drive about the speed limit and don’t run lights. So if you’re used to Ontario, you need to be in less of a hurry. That said I got everywhere I needed on time and easily. It was nice to drive here.

The rental agency mall opens at 7am. Try to avoid booking super early flights if possible in order to avoid having to wait.

As an Australian who lived here for a year 5 years ago I was anxious about driving on the other side of the road but it was surprisingly easy to slip back into. Interesting road rules at 3 or 4 way intersections and being able to turn right on a red light.

Driving is good, not too much traffic except when there are accidents

My recommendation if you could is… parking by backing up, always ready for go out from the parking
KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Edmonton
While the capital of Canada's Alberta region may offer good transportation services in the city, renting a car is a great option for travelers looking to embark on some outdoor adventures outside the city. Driving is the best way to get to must-see destinations that are fairly close to the city such as the Elk Island National Park, which is only a 35-minute drive from Edmonton and is the perfect place to hike, canoe, or even camp. Head to the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, which is located just 40 minutes east of Edmonton, for an incredible stargazing experience and a good chance to spot the northern lights.
All the big car hire agencies can be found at Edmonton International Airport (YEG), including Alamo, Enterprise, and Hertz. The car hire counters are located near the baggage claim area on Level P1 (Ground Level) of the Parkade. Some car hire companies may require that you contact them a few days in advance, so make sure you chose one that accommodates your needs.
Edmonton has a few interior highways and even a ring road, but you don't necessarily have to take the main roads (such as Whitemud, Yellowhead, or Anthony Henday) as they end up being the busiest. Look out for cyclists during the months when the weather is good. The weather can be quite harsh in the winter, so reduce your speed and keep a safe distance between your car and the other vehicles since roads can get slippery.
Although traffic in Edmonton is fairly manageable when compared to other Canadian cities, rush hour can still add an extra 30 minutes to an hour to your travel time. Take this into consideration when driving into or out of the city's downtown core, and avoid morning rush hour (between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.) as well as afternoon rush hour (between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.). The Anthony Henday freeway is one of the busiest roads in Edmonton during rush hour, as well as the Whitemud freeway, which is usually busy with traffic heading from south to north and vice-versa.
Edmonton car hire companies typically allow drivers above 25 to hire their vehicles. Nevertheless, some companies work with drivers under 25 but above 21 at a surcharge. If you meet the age requirement, you should produce a driving licence that's valid throughout the entire hire period. International drivers from English-speaking countries can use driving licences from their home country. However, if your driving licence is not in English, you have to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from a recognised body for translation. You may also need to produce other documents, including a passport and proof of residency.
The acceptable mode of payment for cheap car hire in Edmonton is through a credit card from renowned companies such as MasterCard, American Express and VISA. The credit card should be under the main driver's name and remain valid for the entire hire period. Also, the available credit should be enough to cater for a security deposit and the car hire cost. Some car hire companies may accept payments through debit cards, but you'll likely have to produce a ticketed return travel itinerary and pay a deposit. Cash payments are also allowed, but it's quite rare, and they normally come with higher deposits. Check your provider's acceptable mode of payment beforehand to avoid complications.
If you intend to take alcoholic drinks while visiting Edmonton, you should come with an additional driver. The legal blood alcohol limit for all Edmonton drivers is 0.08%, and taking alcohol beyond the allowed limit attracts heavy penalties when caught. Heavy drinking also increases your chances of getting involved in an accident. Most companies require all co-drivers to meet the requirements, like age and licensing, and you should include them in the original contract. In some cases, you may have to pay an extra daily fee for the additional driver, which you should consider if you’re seeking cheap car hire in Edmonton.

I particularly enjoyed the vehicle and the service at the Hertz counter and with the staff when we dropped off the vehicle. The thing that disappoints and continues to disappoint when I hear about it in the automotive industry. That is the failure to supply a spare tire and further not to supply an emergency repair kit pump and so on for the existing tires. I had travelled to remote areas on this vacation and Alberta and Saskatchewan have many gravel roads. I tried to mitigate my circumstances by buying a pump and a tire repair kit. Thankfully, I did not have to use it. Unfortunately, I believe that if I had a flat in one of my far away places that I visited roadside service would not be efficient. That’s my rant and in the future, I will try to choose a rental that has a spare tire if possible!
I got to the rental office and they had no cars available. The employees were completely unapologetic and said to come back in several days

Unfortunately thrifty charged us for the extra insurance even though our booking we did online had already charged us for this. When I discovered this they would not give me any money back so I paid far too much for this car rental.
They did not gave any refund and charged the whole deposit.
