When we arrived we were told they might not have a car and that is extremely stressful when you are headed out for vacation. The front desk told us about how she would have to clean a vehicle and she had no help and just a lot of information customers don’t need to know. She said it was full of gas and when we went to leave for our trip we realized it only had 1/4 of a tank which led to an additional stop. The car I reserved wasn’t available at pickup. And after I did everything online to pick up my car, I still had to wait in line. Then the service agent wanted to me re-register online even though their site wasn’t working. It was a mess and took forever. Super inefficient staff.Reviewed 31 July 2026

As a gold member which anyone can be just by signing up, you can rent the car online then when you get to your destination you just find your name on the board, pick your car from the area you chose online and keys are waiting. You simply drive away. No lines. No waiting. Cameras inspect the car on the way out and back in when you drop it off. No waiting.Reviewed 30 July 2026

Can’t be any worse. Prepaid in full—-$600. Total ended up $1,000!? Unprecedented rip-off. Recharging equipment is limited at the airport and recharging takes a long time. Hertz should let customers know that they must arrive at the airport 2 hours earlier than the scheduled return. When picking up the car, we let them know we had already bought insurance (from Kayak as well), but they charged us full insurance anyway. They have no sense of shame.Reviewed 30 July 2026

When I booked car I was given a special promotion (nowhere said electric in small print as the rep from Hertz insisted). Car was booked for a long trip, there is no way I could stop often to charge vehicle. Very poor sales tactics from Hertz. Bad!Reviewed 29 July 2026

This is very simple. I understand that Hertz has rules and parameters that they operate in. When all of those are met the rental car experience should be smooth sailing. The Des Moines office was one of the worst places I’ve ever been for a rental car. I called customer care and and the representative told the gentleman at the desk to honor my reservation however he refused. I do not know him personally and I have never met him. I wasn’t rude. With all they said the guy at the desk still refused to rent me a car after two hours of going back-and-forth. Finally I was able to get my car. The context of this is that all flights were canceled and delayed out of the airport going to Chicago. The gentleman at the desk refused to let me rent a one-way rental to O’Hare airport on a debit card nowhere does it State that I can’t do that. I was well aware of the $500 hold and was OK with that. I had my own car insurance State Farm and everything should’ve been smooth. I even had a reservation. I used a third-party website kayak. I read all rules carefully. Nothing stated that I could not rent a one-way rental from one airport to another with the debit card. I hated the experience. It was embarrassing, strenuous and flat out wrong. The reason I didn’t call corporate or further pursue some satisfaction with this situation is because I wanted a cooling off period. No car after an 11 hour flight delay. Finally offered an older model Tesla which wouldn't hold a charge, trunk and door locks didn't work. Drop off was a nightmare. We were told we could drop off after hours in Newark. Key wouldn't fit so we left the car and had to FedEx the key to them despite the Hertz agent telling us to return the key in Manhattan (our destination,). No adjustment in price for delay or lack of car. Now they're claiming major damage to the car and trying to charge us extra. It has been the worst rental experience in 45 years of renting cars. Can't reach a person on the phone either. Their "customer service" is completely AI driven. I will NEVER rent from Hertz again.Reviewed 28 July 2026
