Sub-par car and extortionate insurance policies
Pros: Functional SUV in a country where even the main roads can be sketchy, friendly and reasonably professional service.
Cons: SUV felt poorly maintained, with sloppy steering, a glitchy transmission and numerous dings and small broken parts that we didn’t discover until on the road (a broken windshield wiper for example).
The worst part was that my online quoted $360 weekly rate ballooned to over $1300 when all the local BS nickel & dime fees were factored in (including mandatory insurance when I was told on arrival that my third party Allianz policy which I’d already paid for was not valid in the Dominican Republic, even though I’ve used that company everywhere from Tanzania to Thailand).
It’s very hard to maintain a rental fleet on a Caribbean island with limited resources - I get that. However, I felt like I was hustled/extorted, and should’ve been informed in advance that I had to buy ‘local’ insurance in order to drive my car away. Shame on Avis.
The car wasn’t on its best conditions
Cons: It had a strange smell inside, it had a plastic piece that flew off while we where driving, the suspension had some issues
Pros: Very professional, very close to the airport, easy to get the car, easy to drop it off.
Cons: The car had two issues. One of the tires lost a lot of air and also the battery suddenly died, had to open the hood and move the battery cables, then it worked (happened twice).
Cons: He hard sell and lying that all rental companies do to rip off people with the CWD...
Pros: Nothing!
Cons: I ended up with no vehicle and had to cancel the reservation.
This is very typical (and chronic) of the Dominican Republic; I show up late a night with my family to find that they want to squeeze us into a car that barely fits 5 people (we are 6). This is not the car I had selected and was willing to pay for (my reservation indicated that it was for a vehicle that can sit 7 people + 3 pieces of luggage).
Understanding that this happens all the time, I proactively started calling AVIS in DR a week in advance to avoid surprises. I was suggested to call the date of (again) in order to confirm that we were indeed traveling that date, and to guarantee that the correct vehicle would be there for us. I called the date of the flight, assured the care was already there, and still got a compact car with the excuse that there was no availability.
I ended up taking a taxi at 2 AM out of the airport with my whole family (we just don't fit in a compact car!). I was not offer a discounted rate for the crappy/inferior piece of junk they were offering us.
In addition, the staff is never helpful, and become rude and belligerent when one tries to indicate that they dropped the ball and all they offer you is to cancel the reservation (obviously for one to deal with the mess of being stuck at the airport). They are so incompetent!
By the way, please note 1- I am Dominican, and 2- It happens with all major multinational car rental companies (not just AVIS) in DR, 3- They do try to coerce you into accepting bogus additional services and fee, threatening you that it is mandatory in DR, and holding you and your family hostage.
So goddamn frustrating to start one's vacation (repeatedly) on a bad note because, notwithstanding one's best efforts and willingness to pay, one cannot get the vehicle that one needs and reserves, and have to waste one's vacation dates dealing with these type of issues.
Such an unpleasant experience (again and again!).

When I returned the car half full I had to pay $20 extra for fuel. Given the already very high car rental price in Dominican Republic compared to Europe due to high insurance charges, this was quite annoying.

Cons: Tenía un olor extraño en el interior, tenía una pieza de plástico que volaba mientras conducíamos, la suspensión tenía algunos problemas

Cons: El coche tenía dos problemas. Uno de los neumáticos perdió mucho aire y también la batería de repente murió, tuvo que abrir el capó y mover los cables de la batería, entonces funcionó (sucedió dos veces).
Cons: Él duro vender y mentir que todas las compañías de alquiler hacen para rasgar a la gente con el CWD...

Esto es muy típico (y crónico) de la República Dominicana; me encuentro tarde por la noche con mi familia para descubrir que quieren meternos en un coche que apenas encaja con 5 personas (somos 6). Este no es el coche que había seleccionado y estaba dispuesto a pagar (mi reserva indicó que era para un vehículo que puede sentar 7 personas + 3 piezas de equipaje).
Entendiendo que esto sucede todo el tiempo, comencé proactivamente a llamar a AVIS en DR una semana antes para evitar sorpresas. Se me sugirió llamar a la fecha de (de nuevo) para confirmar que de hecho viajábamos esa fecha, y garantizar que el vehículo correcto estaría allí para nosotros. Llamé a la fecha del vuelo, aseguré que el cuidado ya estaba allí, y todavía tenía un coche compacto con la excusa de que no había disponibilidad.
Terminé tomando un taxi a las 2 de la mañana fuera del aeropuerto con toda mi familia (¡simplemente no caben en un coche compacto!). No me ofrecieron una tarifa descontada para el pedazo de basura crappy/inferior que nos estaban ofreciendo.
Además, el personal nunca es servicial, y se vuelven groseros y beligerantes cuando uno intenta indicar que se cayó el balón y todo lo que te ofrecen es cancelar la reserva (obviamente para uno para lidiar con el lío de estar atrapado en el aeropuerto). ¡son tan incompetentes!
Por cierto, por favor note 1- Soy dominicano, y 2- sucede con todas las grandes compañías multinacionales de alquiler de coches (no sólo Avis) en DR, 3- intentan obligarle a aceptar falsos servicios y honorarios adicionales, amenazándole que es obligatorio en DR, y reteniéndole a usted y a su familia como rehenes.
Tan goddamn frustrante comenzar las vacaciones (repetidamente) en una mala nota porque, a pesar de los mejores esfuerzos y la voluntad de pagar, no se puede conseguir el vehículo que uno necesita y reserva, y tiene que perder las fechas de vacaciones que uno se ocupa de este tipo de cuestiones.
Una experiencia tan desagradable (¡una y otra vez!).

Cons: El tanque estaba medio lleno cuando empecé, pero el empleado de Avis notó que el tanque estaba 2/3 lleno y no le puse atención a lo que escribió. Cuando regresé el coche medio lleno tuve que pagar $20 extra por combustible. Dado el ya muy alto precio de alquiler de coches en República Dominicana comparado con Europa debido a los altos cargos de seguro, esto era bastante molesto.

When I got there, they told me that they didn’t recognize the insurance that I paid before I got there. Then, they increased the car prices and wanted to get the insurance from them for a lot of money, then another $500 down in case something happened...
My question was how they can make people pay all that money for a liability insurance
Pros: Nothing, the customer service sucked! My reservations were canceled due to time difference that I was not made aware of when booking plus they did not problem solve were very dismissive and said they had No cars at all.
Cons: Customer service could have advised about the time difference plus the hold of vehicles. I should have been guided to other rental companies that would have given me a better deal. I had to figure it all out by myself. They guys there suck big time.
Cons: We have paid but didn’t get a car! They rented out from under us. We were a day late due to a reschedule implemented by American Airlines. When we called to tell them when we would be picking it up, the lady hung up on us twice, we couldn’t get thru several times and finally we got a hold of someone who told us they rented it and had no more cars available. We need this rental credited back to us. Thanks
Pros: Nothing!!!!!! They have no cars available, in any class or shape. No notification was made to me about this prior to arrival. We had no vehicle and they offer no alternative. Had to use another company on my own and ended up paying almost double for a rental. Horrible service! On the Dominican Republic all they care is about money! The level of satisfactory customer service is zero!!!!!!

Pros: Randy was super fast and super friendly. Picking up the car was literally 10 minutes.

Pros: The staff at Maximo Gomez and Independencia was excellent. She was very pleasant and helpful even though Alamo really messed up my reservation.
Cons: If you make a reservation, there should be a car available for you. I was told they did not have my car but I could be put on a list and I would be number 7 on the list. Unacceptable. I did get on the list and waited two days for a call. Nothing. I fianlly went to the city office and got a car, not the type I reserved but it was sufficient.

Cons: The car's air conditioner was not up to the task of cooling the car during the sunniest, hottest parts of the days--this was true over several hours while cruising at highway speeds. Also, the suspension was pretty worn out. The car bounced around a lot over rough road surfaces.

The insurance you buy through kayak does not work in all countries so I had to get local insurance which was very expensive. The drop off fee and taxes also changed once we were there, it ended up being so expensive. Not at all what I signed up for.Right before finishing up our pick they lost electricity. You would think budget would have a plan for that but they don’t. The poor employee had to start from scratch twice!

Cons: I booked 2 SUVs for my family vacation to DR and when got to Santo Domingo airport I was told there were no SUVs but they could offer us 2 small cars. When I protested I was met with a shrug and told “it’s the holiday season. There are no SUVs”. It’s clear that there was never an intention to rent us SUVs and it felt like we were lured into renting from Hertz. We ended up paying close to the SUV price for the small cars we got instead. There are beach roads in DR that need SUVs. We had to avoid those. I previously rented SUVs from Avis in Santiago DR during this exact same holiday week with no issue.

The insurance that kayak is selling on the website does not work in the Dom. Rep. Felt like a bait and switch where they charged 5-6 times as much money for insurance in the country that was was sold to me online (about $400-500 for 9 days), I had to cancel the online policy because it was not accepted in the country of the rental (it shouldn’t be offered!).

Watch Out for the Insurance Rip Off
Cons: The rental web site offers insurance. The rental agency does not accept the insurance you purchase on the rental web site, and requires you to purchase another, much more expensive, policy before renting the vehicle: no locally purchased policy, no rental! The rental agency suggested calling (international) the insurance company which provides the insurance offered on the rental web site to cancel the policy - not very practical. A rip off coming and going. Dollar and Kayak should be more transparent in what is offered through their services.

Cons: We were checked in for a car that was clearly too small. We canceled when we got to car and took taxis. Check in took 40 mins with a screaming child. Paperwork was excessive.

They didn't give any kind of upgrade or refund for the lesser car they gave us for that day. The charges us 14 dollars a day for a gps when the car the next day had a gps installed in it. When I tried to turn it in at punta cana they said to turn it in at the end in Santo Domingo and then in Santo Domingo they said we should have turned it in at the dollar in punta cana. They sold us additional insurance saying that they could not rent us a car without it even though I already had a policy in hand which had better protection than that which they sold me. Overall terrible renting experience.

Cons: When we arrived at Enterprise, not only did they not have the vehicle we reserved, they had literally NO VEHICLES available. They were not able to provide transportation via another rental agency. So, we had to pay for a taxi to take us on our 2 hour trip from the airport to our hotel. It was not a pleasant experience.

Cons: The entire transaction was a giant headache. They did not have the car I reserved. I had to pay more for a different SUV because that was the only vehicle in inventory.

Cons: Major scam - They did not hold our car for us one hour despite knowing our flight info and that we were delayed by one hour. When we got there our $335 car was not available and the only thing they had to offer us was $1000+. This is a scam! Our friends were in the same boat.

I don’t know how I can have a reservation and then show up and be told there are no cars. We waisted hours at the airport as a result and took expensive taxis instead. Since we would be taking the car for 6 days instead of 7, the agent informed us the rate would double! we ended up finding another car with another company, but not nearly as good a deal as our Payless reservation because we had to book at the last minute.

Cons: When I got there to pick up the car I was told that I to pay a different price no with exceptions. So I reserved the car from home for a set price because it was what I could afford only to end up having to pay twice as much once I picked up the car.
Also when I went to pick up the vehicle I had to wait forever because the attendant was nowhere to be found. The receptionist who attended me with the paperwork had to get out and get the car herself after I kept coming back to tell her that I was still waiting. The gentleman who was assigned to get the car was practically only a few feet from me sitting on a chair sleeping and pretending he didn't work there.. Horrible service. Just horrible.
As for the car it was scratched all over with many dents all around including the at the hood as if someone beat it with a baseball bat. Also had horrible paint job on the back. You can see the yellow stains protruding from the original white paint and the windshield was cracked. But at least the car did its job to take me from point A to point B without any problems..

Cons: The rental agent insisted on me getting collision and 3rd party insurance after I told him that I did not needed the additional coverage due to my credit card protection and additional insurance I bought through Kayak. After about an hour discussion, he then tells me that it is a new law that just went into effect last month and that I had no choice but to buy the insurance from them. When that didn't work, he then tried the scare tactics to try to convince me to buy the insurance that was twice as much as the actual rental cost.
Then came the class of car that I was paying for. I reserved a full size car, but I ended up with a compact car instead. When I complained about the size of the car, I was told that I had to pay more because the larger cars were considered premium class. Nowhere else would someone consider a Hyundai Accent to be a premium car. After another 45mins argument, he agreed to give me an Accent instead of the sub compact car he originally was trying to give me for the price of the larger car. After spending 10 hours flying and an additional 2 hours at the rental desk, I still ended up paying an extra $20 from the reservation price. Not exactly sure why, but I was not willing to spend another hour arguing over the extra $20.
