I was forced into a scam at the Europcar Quito Airport counter. Upon arrival, Europcar refused to honor my prepaid voucher. The counter agent explicitly stated that the rate was a special price that did not cover the minimum requirements to take the car. They refused to release the vehicle unless I paid an extra $589.03 for mandatory local liability insurance and coverages, despite my credit card covering collision and liability. Stranded at the airport with no alternative, I was forced under duress to pay the additional $589.03 just to get the keys for a vehicle I had already paid for. Withholding a prepaid rental to force customers into paying double at the counter is extortion and a total breach of contract. Kayak is actively routing customers to rental providers that engage in predatory practices and refuse to honor prepaid bookings. I have already initiated a credit card dispute and demand a full refund for the forced charges.Reviewed 6 Aug 2026

Terrible experience with Europcar Italy. Car broke down with a serious gearbox fault — unsafe to drive — and we were stranded with my family for over 4 hours waiting for a replacement. When I complained, customer service falsely claimed it was just an “air conditioning issue,” despite my video evidence proving otherwise, and refused to compensate for the time lost. They also buried a €39.68 “Family Pack” charge in the paperwork without ever explaining what it was, then refused to remove it. A wrongly applied fuel charge was only refunded after I provided my own proof. Dishonest, unhelpful, and not worth the risk. Avoid.Reviewed 4 Aug 2026

The car was great and there were no problems as far a quality. However, the pick up process was not good. I purchased the insurance through the website when the reservation was done. When I got to the counter they informed me that I had two options. Buy the insurance that they had, even though I had already purchased insurance, or have an $18,000.00 Hold on my credit card. Of course because of the amount and it being a foreign transaction, my credit card thought it was fraud and the hold could not be placed. I was forced to buy the second insurance. On top of everything, I rented the car for 4 days and they only had cars that had Pico Y placa on one of those days. So it could not be used in town for one of the days. My reservation was supposed to have free cancellation up to 48 hours in advance. I was never able to cancel it. I had to undergo heart surgery that prevented me from traveling. I spoke with Europcar and they told me they couldn't cancel it because it was made through Kayak. The reservation number was 26705658. They charged me for a service they didn't provide. The car was listed as a “mid-size” SUV but was actually a compact and hardly fit our luggage. But the worst part was the chaos at the pick up and drop off. The staff was not interested in being helpful and had no organization. Everyone was frustrated and they did not seem to care at all. Will never rent through them again.Reviewed 27 July 2026

I called a couple of days before to tell them I was coming early due to a flight change and they said it wouldn't be a problem. When I showed up with my family in tow, it was a problem, we spent an hour and a half before cancelling the original and paying an extra $100 for the rent because of me being two hours early. I called two days before to make sure I wouldn't have problems, I had the chance to rebook two days before. The beginning of a vacation shouldn't start this way.
