Payless and stress morePros:Ian Mendez at the Fort Myers was VERY helpful and saved the day for me by driving me to my location.Cons:Adam Grant at the Fort Myers, Fl location was disrespectful and rude to me and other customers. I accidentally went to the wrong location and instead of giving me a car at my quoted price he tried to charge me 3x more and when I did not he rudely told me I would have to pay for a cab to get there. There were several other very unhappy people there as well. Also I could not return my car to the scheduled location at the time of my flight because it had such limited hours and no drop box. I had to leave it at the other location and was charged $75 more. Since there was no shuttle available at 6pm I had to buy a cab.Reviewed 30 Jan. 2017

Pros:Drop off was easyCons:Ok...where should I start? For starters they didn't have the car I reserved. However, I did start at the wrong Payless location so I will take partial blame. I still feel like they could of provided a better car. The car I received was disgustingly dirty, one headlight was out, and the smell of cigar smoke was awful. I called many times to complain and try to get the headlight fixed, but the customer service was pathetic at best. Never fully understanding my issue. I ended up popping the hood and fixing the headlight myself. I will NEVER.....NEVER EVER NEVER EVER rent through Payless again.Reviewed 29 Mar. 2021

Cons:We needed to shorten our rental from 7 days to 4 because of Coronavirus. We called 2 days before returning; the man told my husband they had no record of our rental!!! He tried again the next day and was told he couldn't change it; we should deal with it at the return. At the return, they told us we will have to call customer service, they cannot make changes like that. Of course customer service is telling us we should have dealt with it at the return!!! Is this the only company not working with customers during this unforeseen national crisis??!Reviewed 19 Mar. 2020

Upsell professionals, same class of car questionablePros:The Jetta that I was forced to accept got good gas mileage.Cons:I rented a Chrysler 200 or "similar" and got a Volkswagen Jetta. 200's come standard V6; Jetta, a 4 cylinder. The 200 also offers .ore headroom, for a 6'3" guy like myself. "Mary" at the counter then tried to upsell me to a larger rental vehicle, where a 200 would have been fine. Additionally, Mary attempted to sound knowledgeable regarding auto insurance needs despite a customer's assurance that between their personal full coverage, AND their supplemental insurance, that they were still udercovered, in another blatant attempt at an upsell. When will rental agencies just start renting cars, and simply give the public what they ask for? As a businessman, I have learned that if you simply give the customer what they ask for, no more, and no less, I stand out amongst the competition. It's a simple business model, and yet EVERY CAR RENTAL COMPANY I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH plays the same game! Lastly, had I not asked for a vehicle walk around before leaving the lot, there wouldn't have been one. On return I was asked, "did you fill up"? Nobody checked, not did anyone examine the vehicle for damage, which explains, I guess, why the car was not quite full with gas on pickup, and had multiple dings and scratches on it.Reviewed 21 May 2017

I ditched the reservationCons:After several phone calls to their office and 22 minutes of waiting outside for the van, I realized the cheaper price was not worth my time. Also I pondered the extra time I would have to allow with this outfit for me to get back to the terminal upon my return. I had been assured the van ran every 15 to 20 minutes, and on my final phone call (at 18 minutes), that it had left the office 8 minutes earlier. The office, by the way, is one mile away. After waiting yet another 4 minutes, I went across the street from the terminal and rented a perfectly lovely car in about 6 minutes. Horrible customer servicePros:The car was nice and it was clean.Cons:It was a long wait to get the car, and I was told to just wander the parking lot (not a lot dedicated to rentals - just a public lot) and press the unlock button until I found the car. The real fun began when I returned the car. After checkout I realized i was over-charged about $20, for an optional service "RSP". I asked the woman at the counter and she said it was to cover the shuttle to/from the airport. I didn't believe this because it wasn't mentioned in the booking, but didn't have time to argue due to my flight. At the airport I did some searching and found that RSP is "Roadside Service Plan" - something I definitely did not ask for. I called the office and the (same) woman said she would correct the charge. But instead of fixing the original charge, she charged me again. Now I paid the original (incorrect) rate and the corrected rate. I called them last week to get the incorrect charge reversed and the manager said he would take care of it, but as of today my credit card has not been adjusted. Closed early. Left me high and dry.Pros:Nothing.Cons:I called the night before my pick up to tell them my flight wouldn't be landing until 10:30pm. They said they close at 11pm but would send out the last shuttle at 10:45pm. They suggested I call as soon as my plane landed. I did this at 10:30pm on the dot. No answer. I called and called and ran to the pick up area and was there by 10:40pm. Still no answer and no shuttle ever showed up. We had to Uber for $40. Called the next morning to see if we could pick up the car then, but they said our reservation was void after closing time the night before. I explained what happened and asked that they honor the reservation I had previously, but they said they could only make me a new reservation which would have cost $280. My previous reservation price was $69. We ended up walking into an Avis by our condo and got great service and a rental for $80. Payless is a terrible company with terrible customer service. I will NEVER rent from them again, and will make sure to let everyone I know about this experience.Reviewed 17 Jan. 2018

Cons:It was close to closing time, I called ahead to confirm our reservation and we still had to wait over 30 minutes for the Nissan Pathfinder, they said they were "preparing it". It was filthy inside and out, bird crap on it, so many dings, dents and scratches I took a video for my own protection. Within 30 minutes a low tire light came on and I had to continuously add air to the tire and the back hatch didn't lock nor did the hatch window open. I had to back into trees, fences and buildings so no one could open the hatch. I rented in Florida and the license plate was New York which screamed tourist, easy prey. Oh yeah....I rented from the airport but had to pick up 13 miles away with no shuttle $34 Uber ride each way and BOTH Uber drivers said that happens all the time.
