Top tips for hiring a car at Charlotte Douglas Airport

  • Travelers can avoid the inconveniences of public transportation by booking a car rental at Charlotte Douglas Airport. While the CATS bus will drop you off in Charlotte's center, they will not get you to a specific destination. Rental vehicles suit travelers who wish to explore sites within and around Charlotte city. Taxis or shuttles transport travelers to specified destinations but are relatively expensive when one needs to visit more than one popular site. Additionally, with a rental, travelers do not have to stress about bulky baggage or too much luggage, instead of in public transportation means, which sometimes have luggage limits.
  • A shuttle is unnecessary to get to the rental desks at the rental car center since it is within walking distance. Walk past the baggage claim area, and once you are outside, walk across the crosswalk. Multiple car rental agencies, including Enterprise and Avis, have desks on the second floor. Rental vehicles tend to be in high demand because they are convenient and offer flexibility and booking a car before arriving at Charlotte Douglas Airport is highly recommended. A reservation guarantees a traveler a vehicle and ensures they will be out exploring the fascinating sites Charlotte city offers a few minutes after landing.
  • Finding the return location for the rental is easy, but travelers must ensure the car is brought back in pristine condition. Each rental agency has a designated returns area indicated to make it easier to locate. Directions to the drop-off area are marked all along the airport's road past the hourly deck's entrance and up to the specific returns area, which has its entrance to the left. After dropping off the vehicle, travelers should exit the deck by taking an escalator or elevator to the second level then go across the bus crosswalk to arrive at the terminal.
  • Picking up a car rental at Charlotte Douglas Airport is more manageable towards the week's end, particularly over the weekends. Travelers scheduled to fly out on an early morning flight should ensure they bring back their rental early in the morning when traffic is slow-moving. Traffic congestion into the bustling airport is also worse in the evening because of heavy traffic, so renters should arrive before 4 pm to avoid returning the rental when Charlotte Douglas Airport car rental offices are not open.
  • Book your car hire at Charlotte Douglas Airport at least 6 days before your trip in order to get a below-average price

CLT's rental car center comes with a covered garage for each agency to shelter the vehicles from harsh climatic conditions. On the third level of the facility, which houses the rental companies, are restaurants. I returned the car when I was supposed to. Three days later I get a text asking when I'm going to return the car. I call them and they say I never returned it. Now I'm having to jump through hoops trying to prove I returned it to them. How do you lose a car that is in airport parking lot!??!!? Will be taking this into consideration the next time I'm renting a vehicle for sure.

No cars were available. Management at airport location did not inform the long list of customers until I asked what he status was. I ended up having to cancel and use a Taxi. Wasted 1.5 hours in this process. Will not use Budget again and will not book any personal travel through Kayak again. The vendor Kayak used to source this rental never answered my calls and their number and email was used for the rental versus mine. Made it impossible to call them and cancel the reservation or attempt to switch to new car rental. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had with renting a car. I will also be making friends and family aware of this so they too do not leverage Budget and Kayak for future reservations.

The car was excellent and the employee was working so hard but it took a full hour and a half (90+ minutes) of standing in line to pick up the car because there was only one person working the rental desk (at noon!). It was the longest rental car line I've ever experienced and it delayed the rest of the trip. I wish there had been more employees working.

I had a long wait at the check in to pick up the car. Their internet was down. This was not their fault, and the lady worked very hard to move the check in line. Once I got my car I could tell it had been smoked in before me. It also had fairly high mileage at 51,000 miles. It was a good value and experience. I would certainly use Dollar Rental Car again.

The pickup shuttle ride from Charlotte airport on Monday 4/28/2025 around 11.00 am, never arrived at assigned location to take us to their off-site rental location. Their office phone number goes direct to their voicemail. I googled and found a national phone number associated with them. She found out after 10 minutes waiting that there is no shuttle today because she is not getting hold of anyone there either. I called for Uber after 45 minutes waiting, we got to that offsite Easirent Car Rent. Some inexperienced young guys out of an eye-sore unorganized office were running the shit-show like headless chickens. No eye contact, no greeting and no apology for us waiting at the airport for not being picked up at all! I asked to see the person in charge, and if they got my car ready. A young white guy who was not so attentive to start with, hesitantly introduced himself Daniel and said he is doing the job for many people there.... My strong suggestion is to STAY AWAY from this place unless you want to be late or no show up for your meetings or be messed up with your plannings.

I had TWO separate bookings, with multiple confirmations. When I got there, the young women at the counter was extremely unhelpful & told me she can’t do nothing for me. Said she couldn’t find any of the reservations. Didn’t even try to offer to book me a new one at the counter, nothing.

It’s a scam. They will try to upsell insurance for “extra protection”

They had a video agent constantly trying to get me to pay extra for various things in a forceful way. On the return, the shuttle would not leave for 30 minutes even though they kept telling us 5-10. Will not use again.

The rental process and the rental car itself were very smooth and a positive experience. The shuttle return to the airport after dropping off the car was quite stressful as it delayed us by 30-40 minutes when the return agent had told us to expect 10 minutes.

NU Car accepted a reservation that was outside their business hours. Their business hours were never communicated at any time. They never answered their phone or sent a shuttle. They are off site if the Charlotte airport in a shopping center. Upon arrival there in a cab, it also appeared that they had no cars. Absolutely avoid this entity.

I have no idea why Kayak would support this company and have them as an option. Do they not listen to their customers ? Look at the reviews. They scam you into $50 extra dollars a day with fake car insurance. Not only did I buy the extra insurance and also have my credit card that covers rental car insurance they add on fake “collision” insurance that’s extra on top of the 2 other insurances I already have.

Carwiz was an interesting experience. First, when I tried calling there office for a shuttle from the airport to their building, it wasn’t allowing me to call. I had to use a landline at the airport information center. Secondly, the line was extremely backed up as they only had one person manning their virtual checkout system. The in person people were not allowed to assist with issuing vehicles, everything was automated. My experience was okay and turn in was quick due to an after hours drop off but people before me were having issues with completing paperwork to receive their vehicles. They also mentioned hidden fees and disappointed with their customer service.

Rental was actually conducted remotely and the agent's Internet connection kept dropping. I was forced to sign and initial a document I couldn't see so I had no idea what I was signing. I wasn't told that foreign third-party liability insurance was not acceptable so I was forced to pay even more for the rental so there was no real savings from the alternatives. The pickup point at the airport was not clearly described so I wasted time waiting in the wrong location.

Very bad rental company I never had the opportunity to rent the car because of their bylaws which was I had no way of knowing. I will never use this company again. In fact I will never use kayak again because you recommended them to me.

My flight from Chicago to Charlotte experience a 4 hour delayed due to storms and the closing of the airport in CLT (temporarily). By the time I landed in Charlotte, CarWiz was closed. I called and called and all I got was a recording stating the office is closed till next morning. I had to scramble and get a car at an astronomical price. I am NOT PAYING for anything with carWiz and I better not get charge for anything regarding this disaster of an experience.

After inquiring about discounts for activity military, I was told they had none. A week later they presented me an offer for $380 for 14 days which was about half of what they told me the week prior. Then when I went to go pick it up, they added an additional 390 in different fees. I don’t know if they try hoodwink everybody or just people in the military…

Title: Disappointing Experience at Ace Wilkinson Blvd If you’re considering renting from here, be aware of the following issues: Limited Mileage: When booking online with the unlimited mileage option, there are restrictions on which states you can drive to. At this location, unlimited miles are limited to only the Carolinas and Virginia. If you plan to travel to Georgia or other states, additional fees apply. I’m aware that other rental agencies (not all) also do this but still… don’t call it unlimited if it’s not unlimited. Hidden Fees: Upon pickup, I also encountered several unexpected charges. For example, despite not using airport services, an airport concierge fee was added to the charges. When questioned, the local office couldn’t provide a satisfactory explanation for this particular fee, so I did not bother to follow-up with questions for several of the other fees that also seemed like padding, these fees increased my total bill to more than 1/3 of the original booking price. Defective Vehicle: This was the most concerning issue. What happened? I booked a full-size sedan, while doing the walk around inspection, I noticed that one of the front bumper clips was missing, causing the end section of the bumper to hang loose enough that the wind could cause further damage while driving. When I brought this to the rep's attention, he acted like this was not a cause for concern. I had to insist that this was unacceptable and that I could not take responsibility for a defective vehicle. He then tried to replace the vehicle with a smaller vehicle type. The issue here is that he wanted to charge me the same rate for a smaller car and insisted that this was the only vehicle he had available. I felt that it was unfair to charge at the same rate, so I ended up cancelling and had to make other plans. So no, I would not recommend.
