Top tips for hiring a car from Dollar at Tucson Airport

  • Although the lines at Dollar car rentals at Tucson International Airport (TUS) are generally short, they can be long during the winter holidays, long weekends, and college graduation season. Tucson is home to the University of Arizona, which usually holds graduation ceremonies at the end of May. If you’re traveling to Tucson to attend a graduation ceremony and plan to self-drive, we recommend planning buffer time in your schedule in case there is a delay at the airport.

However, you cannot pick up your car if you arrive between 12:00 am and 8:00 am. In addition, we recommend planning extra time into your schedule to make sure you reach the rental center before 11:59 pm because Avis consistently closes at midnight.
  • If you’re traveling for business, consider booking a compact or economy car. These types of vehicles are easier to park than larger models and are usually more fuel-efficient. Plus, they offer plenty of space for a solo business traveler to stow his or her belongings. However, if you’re traveling with a large group of colleagues, we recommend booking a vehicle with more seats, such as a minivan or an intermediate SUV. This also allows you to split the rental cost between multiple people.
  • Even though Dollar car rentals at Tucson Airport is closed between 12:00 am and 8:00 am, you can still return your vehicle after hours. Follow the “Dollar car rental return” signs until you find the designated return area. Next, check your car for personal items, and lock the doors. Finally, complete the Dollar contract and drop both the contract and the keys in the drop box. When you complete the Dollar contract, make sure to record the mileage and the fuel level.

I admittedly picked a dealers choice rental. That dealers choice happened to be an EV. I was driving into the mountains and needed a gas car. They charged me an extra 100$ dollars to change the car to a nissan altima. Ive rented from dollar like 15 times and after this stupid upcharge Ill just rent from elsewhere insteadReviewed 18 Feb 2025

Horrible. Wasn’t clear in the reservation that we’d get an electric car. Was only charged 77% when we got it. Can was smelling of smoke and had scratches all over the place. Chip in the window. Had to park it and get a software update for 1 1/2 hours in order for it to charge. Then had it charge for 12 hours k my to get 80% charge . Aweful. I will never rent and electric car again, and will avoid dollar/thrifty/hertz whenever possible. If they try to stick my with any damage on this car I will see them in court.Reviewed 2 Oct 2023

Pros:Free upgrade due to longer wait in line and a free trade when the upgraded car did not meet our needs.Cons:I had to wait to give my keys to someone for drop off and let them know I had a full tank. I think they could do a more automated drop off.Reviewed 2 Feb 2021
