Don't expect to get on the road quickly. Use care in the very tight ramp for the parking garage. While we didn't have an issue, there was quite a number of different colored scrapes along the wall! People like to run lights in Anchorage, so don't be too anxious when your light turns green.

I would always recommend a 4WD or AWD rental when in Anchorage unless you plan to stay right in town for the duration of your trip
JosephNov 2024
Due to the extreme winter weather and harsh driving conditions here make sure you check your very well before taking possession of it. Budget will tell you this but take an extra minute to check your vehicle for any dings or smudges etc.
JimJune 2024
If you’ve got a big family get a big car. It was a great experience in Anchorage, but you’re going to want to make sure that you’re good with lots of traffic lights.
Verified travelerMay 2024
We came in late spring, so a light SUV is fine. Be sure you’re covered by your home auto insurance to avoid the very expensive insurance add-ons. We’re from California, so gas here was nearly $2/gallon cheaper. Fill up yourself before returning rather than using the return-on-empty scheme they offer.

It would help to have a parking app on your phone for downtown Anchorage. The road traffic was not that bad compared to other large cities in the US.
RNov 2023
None. The process was too Easy.
RachelAug 2023
The rental car return is very close to the terminal, so if you have 2 adults in your group and lots of luggage, I recommend dropping checked bags off first with one adult and then the other adult can return the car.

Easy city to drive in
MichaelJune 2023
This was my 30th June in Anchorage. I am told that the roads are icy in the winter, and they do a lot of construction in the summer. I did not see any construction within Anchorage, but there were some minor delays on the way down to the Kenai Peninsula. Parking downtown in Anchorage is metered, but nothing unusual.
Verified travelerAug 2023

SapphireJune 2023

Verified travelerJune 2023
Easy driving, roads were in bad shape.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Be careful on the road because there are many people who drive recklessly on the road which will result in an accident and then you have to pay repairs from your own pocket. Insurance is expensive and same as your life.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Anchorage

  • Renting a car is by far the best option for travelers looking to explore the vast Alaskan landscapes that lay just short drives away from Anchorage. Driving is the best way to get to nearby places that are a must-see for everyone visiting Alaska, including the Chugach Mountains area with its hundreds of miles of wilderness trails. Some of the main access points in Chugach State Park are located 20 minutes away from downtown Anchorage. There are also 60 glaciers within 50 miles of the city, which means a car provides the comfort of defining your own route and hopping on and off whenever desired.
  • All the big car hire agencies can be found at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), which is just 5 miles away from the city. Car hire services can be found in the new hire Car Center, which is across from the South Terminal. The airport provides free shuttle buses every 15 minutes between the South Terminal, the North Terminal, and the hire Car Center.
  • The roads in Anchorage are well-kept throughout the whole year, which means no chains are required even when it snows. However, be extra careful during the winter, as accidents are more likely to happen in tougher weather conditions. Moose also like to roam around freely, which means extra care is needed, particularly at night.
  • Traffic is not usually a huge problem in the city of Anchorage. However, if there are any special events taking place over the weekend, both Glenn Highway heading north and the Seward Hwy road heading south can experience congestion. On weekdays, avoid driving into or out of the city between 7:30 and 9 a.m., and 4 to 6 p.m, especially through the Glenn Highway. Fresh snow can also slow down traffic even more.
  • To hire a car in Anchorage, you must be at least 18 years old, and in some cases, 21, depending on the car hire company. You'll need to have a valid driver's licence and a credit card in your name. Some hire companies may also require additional documentation, such as proof of insurance or a second form of identification. Additionally, some hire companies may place restrictions on where you can take the hire car and how far you can drive it, so it's important to check the company's policies and restrictions before hiring a car.
  • In Anchorage, a driver is considered to be driving under the influence if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is 0.08% or higher for drivers who are 21 or older. The BAC limit for drivers under 21 is 0.00%. The penalties for a DUI offence in Anchorage can include jail time, fines and licence revocation, and they can increase for repeat offenders. Additionally, drivers who refuse to take a breathalyser test can also face licence suspensions and fines. It is important to obey these laws and to avoid driving a car under the influence of alcohol, to ensure the safety of yourself and others on the road.
  • Child safety seat laws in Anchorage require that children under eight or shorter than 57″ (145 cm) be placed in a proper child safety seat. Children between eight and 15 years old must wear a seat belt in any seat of a vehicle, and the driver is responsible for ensuring that all passengers under the age of 16 are properly restrained. The car seat must also be properly installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and meet federal safety standards. Failure to comply with these laws can result in fines and penalties.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Anchorage for $131 or less
  • Small hire cars in Anchorage are around 50% cheaper than other car types, on average

We booked online with kayak, but when we got to the Avis ticket counter, they said they didn’t honor same day booking site reservations, and refused to provide a car for us. We ended up having to go with budget, which ended up being cheaper anyway.

I bought the extra insurance for 50k damage to the vehicle and it didn't matter cause they won't rent a car to someone who doesn't have thier insurance card on them. I'm with a small time insurance company who doesn't have 24 hour access to a digital card and I don't travel with my insurance card... it stays in my car! They already have fleet insurance on all thier vehicles anyway so regardless the car is covered for liability right? So I bought full coverage and had the policy in front of the agent and it didn't matter because of policy?.. stupid. More like profiling! I've never had a problem like this with nextcar or budget or dollar and I work for door dash which has avis perks they tell me. I've always been able to rent a car with my platinum Mastercard anywhere and bought the extra insurance anyways cause it has helped, and I suggest anyone out there to do the same. Just don't rent from a is anchorage. F them

The customer service was amazing, especially when I returned the vehicle. Not saying the pickup was bad but coming in from a long flight and looking for nexcar and they not having a prominent poster like everyone else was a little frustrating. They provide me the vehicle I had chosen, also the counter experience and picking up the vehicle and dropoff was different than other car rental places. I guess it's more self reliance than I was use to. I wouldn't change anything! I will definitely be looking for them for all my rental needs in Alaska.

The check-in and check-out was flawless. The interior windows had not been cleaned in a LONG time, so driving into the sun or headlights was dangerous.

The long wait at the counter to pick up the car negatively tainted the entire experience. (The coffee someone had skilled on the floor in the line was also unpleasant--and hazardous. No one seemed to care that everyone was having to line up around it.). The car itself was nice and was better than expected when we took the chance on the mystery vehicle. Checking the car back in was pretty easy and, thankfully, quick.

Quick and easy to rent. No one did a walk around inspection of the car. It was parked in a garage with poor lighting, so you couldn't see any scratches or minor damage. When dropping off the car. No one checked for damage.

We made a reservation with Dollar in Anchorage, AK expecting to be able to get to the rental location from the airport. The airport had a dollar rental car desk but was not where our reservation was. There was no shuttle to the other location and we were told the other location did not open until 8 a.m. our flight had been changed by the airline to leave at 8 a.m. this meaning we had to be at the airport by 6 a.m. Leaving no option but to use the airport location. They would not match the price we were quoted. The rental ended up costing us $800 MORE than we expected. Will not be using Dollar again.

Your site says pickup would be at airport. It was not. Required shuttle and no person whatsoever present to help. Only email indicating to take shuttle to off airport parking and get key from a lock box with combination provided in email. No one there upon car return to sign off on damage free return. Car was older model but clean and serviceable. They mentioned that they have tried to correct misconception with Kayak regarding pickup and drop off. Have they? Why haven’t you addressed this? Felt deceived.
