Anchorage weekend travelPros:After researching a number of car rental websites I found Thrifty to be the best value for the $. When I arrived to pickup the car the customer service folks were great and within a few minutes I was heading out the door. The car was clean and ready for the road. I didn’t have any problem with the vehicle and it was great on gas mileage. Returning the vehicle was also easy, when we arrived at the car rental location, a Thrifty staff member completed our rental car transaction within a few minutes.Cons:The car was great no problems!Reviewed 22 Jul. 2018

Lies, misleading information, and dangerousCons:When we got there, the van we reserved wasn't ready, but the counter guy said he could give us a different one with studs. Being from Alaska, I had assumed any rental car in the winter would have studs or at least snow tires, but no, their standard rates only cover summer tires. Apparently they want their customers to get in wrecks. Then he cut us a "deal" to "only" pay an additional $20 a day for the studs, an essential piece of safety equipment. Just after we left the airport, we noticed a tiny rock chip in the windshield, way up above the rearview mirror. To be on the safe side, we called in to tell them about it, and they said they'd note it down, no need to come back to change the previous damage form. When we returned it, they "noticed" it (probably because the note told them it was there- otherwise, who looks in the darkened part of the windshield above the mirror?), said they had no record of our call, and charged us for the damage. Basically, Thrifty is renting cars unsuitable for winter roads, upcharging customers for necessary equipment, and scamming them with damage charges. Stay away.Reviewed 5 Jan. 2017

Pros:Great value for money. No "hidden fees".Cons:Their phone-based customer service. It takes hours, literally, for them to pick the phone at the airport location. If you select any other option, it takes you to a Thrifty's call center in the Philippines, where they cannot access your reservation (because the Anchorage airport location is a Thrifty's franchisee location).Reviewed 22 Jul. 2020

Pros:The car was in good shape and worked out well for the area and weather conditions.Cons:1) "Would you like tires with that?", when I picked up the car I'm told that the tires on the car I rented would not work in the weather conditions but if I paid extra I could get winter tires with studs. The roads were covered in packed snow and ice. There was no way you could get by without winter tires. 2) I was told "Not to fill up with gas when I returned it". The employee at the counter didn't ask my preference or give options but stated "don't fill up the car before returning it because we get a special rate of $2.50 a gallon and you would be charged almost $5 at the pump, we will fill and just charge you for what you used". That is what I was told and yet I ended up paying for a full tank, eventhoughReviewed 30 Dec. 2019

Pros:The price would have been reasonable. The convenience of another rental company being right next store with better policies. The ease of penalty free cancelation.Cons:Be more like the rest of the world and not require a copy of my insurance when its in my car 200 miles away. I had endured this once before. I got in and was ready to go only to learn I couldn't rent the car because you needed a copy of my insurance. A first in all my years of renting cars. I couldnt recall which company that was at the time of this reservation so to avoid that issue happening again. After making my reservation. I called to make sure. And was told nope. As long as your using a major credit card, which is consistent with the rest of the world, you should be fine. So, I show up only to have that contradicted. And Im told oh everyone here knows that. Well ..... apparently everyone does not. And I took my business down a few counters where they don't require that. I was also told yah if your a resident we need proof but if non resident. We don't. What? The seems backwards but hey.I have a credit card with coverage. And two auto polices that cover rentals. But other than a company offering me coverage for a fee. Ive never had to provide proof. All over the country. Last time I had to get picked up and driven across town and dig my vehicle out to get my card. And come back etc. Huge delays to my arrival plans. Ridiculous and unacceptable. You guys need to get on the same page. And get WiFi so people can use there phone or laptop to access emails to retrieve a copy if they can successfully get one emailed to them after hours.Reviewed 31 Oct. 2020

Pros:Staff was fine, Pickup and drop-off were easy.Cons:It was incredibly expensive at $300/day. We had no choice of vehicles and they gave us a large Toyota minivan when we would have preferred a small SUV. We dropped it off 5 hrs earler than we had planned to avoid another full days charge, which caused us to skip doing some of the things we wanted to do. It also necessitated a very long wait in the ticketing area of the airport before we could drop off our bags.Reviewed 2 Jul. 2021

Pros:We got a vehicle.Cons:We did not get the vehicle we requested. The staff were unprofessional and rude. The employee who processed our rental charged us incorrectly by overcharging us $1400 which put a hold for that amount on our credit card. The $1400 that was being held on the card was supposed to be used for additional expenses on our trip. Without having those funds available Thrifty put us in a horrible position for paying for basic necessities on our vacation. In addition the employee who processed our rental provided incorrect information regarding the insurance available to purchase when renting a vehicle. He stated multiple times that there were three different packages we could purchase. He stated the amounts of each package and stated the insurance was all inclusive covering our rental for the time we had it rented. He did not mention that this was a daily charge. He then proceeded to grab my fiancé’s credit card out of his hand and input it into the machine. He did not tell us the final total and charged the card to $2600. Our rental was quoted at $1200. This was not the experience I expected from a simple vehicle rental to start the beginning of our vacation. We are very disappointed and will not be using Thrifty ever again.Reviewed 26 Jun. 2021

Pros:The car is very good. Drop off process is easy.Cons:The guy in Anchorage airport counter said extra driver even as couple would be charged since they were affiliate of Thrifty. It was not stated in the reservation.Reviewed 10 Sep. 2018

Pros:Cars were in good condition and ran good. A little on the uncomfortable side but not horrible.Cons:All the hidden taxes that you pay and they are not explained at all on the receipt. Also, we were initially given a car that was not what we reserved. Had to push to get the type of car that we actually rented. The rental car associates could have been more professional.Reviewed 18 Jul. 2018
