I've been renting cars for decades--Dollar Detroit was the worstPros:Hertz took up where Dollar left off and gave me wonderful service. They picked up and rented a car to me.Cons:My plane was scheduled to arrive at 1am Friday in Detroit. When it was running late, my wife spent TWO AND A HALF HOURS trying to get through and let Dollar know about this (they kept putting her on hold). When she finally got through, they assured her that someone would be there, even though my plane was delayed. They failed to tell her that the Dollar shuttle stopped working at 1am! A Budget shuttle driver kindly recommended I take the Hertz shuttle. I was told by two Hertz employees that Dollar lies all the time about staying there for delayed flights. A whole line of people from Dollar had to go to Hertz. They were also lied to. I've been renting cars from Dollar for decades and always had good service. Unbelievable Customer Service. Just Awful!!! ThePros:The Shuttle Driver was kind, considerate, professional. The ONLY positive part of this experience...besides the fact that I was able to walk through a fence to Hertz.Cons:Waited a very long time for shuttle from airport (3 Hertz, 2 National, 2 Budget passed by while waiting) Walked in the door with a group and the 2 agents behind the counter let us all know that there are no cars and it is an hour wait. They obviously believe they had cornered the market and felt they could do or say anything. It was UNBELIEVABLE!!!! They treated us like" tough for you." When I got to counter, I asked if the shuttle could take me to Hertz. She told me in a nasty, snarky, smirk tone that Hertz just bought us and you will wait there too. So I walked to Hertz (where I am a Hertz Gold Member), and secured a car in 15 minutes, with a kind, considerate, trained professional. I have been a Hertz Gold member for some years, but thought I would give this a try. I was NOT WORTH IT AND I WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN. If Hertz did buy Dollar, I hope you train your customer service personnel. My money spends anyplace....and it won't be with these people.Reviewed 3 Oct. 2016

Go to Alamo instead.Cons:Go to Alamo instead. Dollar tricks you into saying yes to insurance that is not mandatory. For me, that resulted in a rental cost that was nearly three times what appeared in the online reservation. Then they hold an additional $200 on your credit card. So, had I been stupid enough to carry out the transaction, the $103 charge I was expecting became a $500 hold on my card. I said no thanks and went to Alamo, where they don't hold the additional charge and they don't try to trick you into insurance that heavily inflates the rental cost. The charge they submitted at the time of the reservation was the real, actual final charge. They're also really nice and they give you bottled water (Alamo, NOT Dollar).Reviewed 13 Oct. 2015

Dollar- they won't pick you up.Cons:Had a flat the first day- out of anyone's control. Customer service was VERY user-unfriendly: kept getting the same automated menu no matter what number we called. Could not get numbers for any physical offices and had difficulty getting a human being. Finally got someone- they told us Dollar would send someone out to put the donut on (for a fee, of course). Initially told the wait would be three hours (ended up being about an hour)- this was December in Michigan. Then told we could exchange the car, but had to drive it in to the closest office, 45 minutes away. Cust service couldn't get a hold of that office, so we had to drive on interstates at 50mph on the donut over an hour to exchange at a Hertz (Dollar's parent company). Unbelievable that they didn't send someone out with the exchange car. Killed a day of our vacation.Reviewed 2 Jan. 2018

The print on this website is so small and the contPros:The car was clean and mechanically sound.Cons:When I arrived at my destination to pick up the car there were 20 parties on line waiting to be served and only 2 tellers. The line moved very slowly and I had to wait almost 50 minutes to check in. And that line always had at least 20 parties waiting in it. 2 tellers was just not enough staff to handle the volume of people coming through this facility. This is the kind of thing that an organization with the resources that Dollar has available to it should be able to anticipate.Reviewed 29 Aug. 2016

Pros:- Ease of rental - Value of rental - Assisted by Michelle King when she noticed that I was carrying more bags than I could handle; she rolled them for me up to the shuttle! Out of Cars in the Middle of the NightPros:Brand new car with 6 milesCons:Dollar Rental Agency ran out of cars at 1am and shipped customers to Hertz ( Hertz owns Dollar) who was not equipped to handle the additional customers in the middle of the night. After an 1.5 hours of standing in line, I was on the road at 230am with a rate nearly double that of my original reservation.
