Could have been better about dropoff information accuracyPros:During pickup, one employee was very helpful and pleasant. Rate was correct and although car had close to 40000 miles on it, car ran well(but had stains inside and torn flooring).Cons:Told that since offsite at Portland airport and last Sunday shuttle was at 6:40 pm, I could return it after that at Budget or Avis. Since it was about 6:40 when I was near return, I went straight to Budget (also offsite). I had to wait in line of people picking up cars for about 15-20 minutes (was advised Budget couldn’t check car in like all othe rental companies at point of return), then waited about another 10-15 minutes for employee to confirm that Budget wouldn’t check in car and I’d have to go to Avis, drove to Avis (onsite) and had to go to office there and finally got it checked in. Made for a tighter run to catch plane than expected. Disappointing lack of coordination and helpfulness by Payless and BudgetReviewed 16 Jul. 2018

Checkout was a disasterCons:The offsite location in Portland is nowhere near the airport. It was at least a 15-minute ride to the Payless location. There was one van - not a shuttle - taking people to the location, so there was always a line of customers. When we arrived at the rental location, there was only one person checking out cars. It took me 45 minutes to get my car with five people in front of me. There were at least that many people behind me in line. The car I got was a Chevy Impala (supposedly an update). It was mediocre in driving. This is my last business with Payless since the experience was not worth the lower price.Reviewed 11 May 2016

Pros:The car was fine and the service was good on site. Everyone was very helpful. The cost of the car was by far the most inexpensive.Cons:When trying to find out if they cover a car in Canada, I could not get an answer, in fact, the staff was rude and uncooperative. When I asked for a supervisor, they would not refer me to one. When I contacted corporate, they would not resolve the issue either. We did not know if the car would be covered until we reached the site. We had to make other plans for driving in Canada before we made our trip, because there was no certainty if we would be able to drive there. When we reached the site, they said quite nicely, "certainly you can drive in Canada.." Why could they not tell us this before we made our trip?Reviewed 26 Jun. 2018

Had to switch to Avis(same company)Pros:The car was okay.Cons:Car was dirty inside when I first got it. Was at the airport at 6pm and waited for the shuttle to drive me to the off airport carlot Payless had. Called and they said a driver would be there shortly(They close at 7pm FYI). So 6:50 comes around and I call again, to be told that no more shuttles were actually coming(awesome!) so they tell me to go to Avis at the airport since it's the same company and they will honor my reservation prices. Weekend goes by and I return the cr with half a tank, I knew they charged a little extra for filling up but they hit me with $80 fee for half a tank!! It cost me $28 to fill up from E in Seattle which had higher gas prices. Thats almost 8x the price! I called to see if they can fix it they only said they go off local premium gas cost and charge an extra 10% fee. So I guess local premium gas is $8 per gallon and I was unaware.Reviewed 8 Nov. 2016

Payless / Avis ConnectionPros:Car was good.Cons:I (Ed Scovil) arrived just past the staffing hours at PDX on Wednesday evening,10/05/16. My information said that AVIS would be able to help me. I went to the AVIS counter, very nice lady, but she had to fill out all the paperwork manually. When I returned the car on Friday evening, I was given a slip of paper with the mileage and told to take to the AVIS desk in the parking structure. The AVIS representative said that they would be unable to process the return until the next day and I was told that I would receive an email confirmation the next morning. My rental contract was retained by AVIS. I have no documentation that I returned the car and I never received an email confirmation as promised. I left my work email. Seems to be a very poor partnership between Payless and AVIS from an efficiency and customer service perspective. I filled the car with gas prior to returning and I still do not have confirmation of my car return and final invoice. Extra charges!!Cons:Quite a ways away from the airport so know that. We rented our car for 2 weeks. A month and a half later we received a letter in the mail from Payless that there was "excessive sand" in the car. (We went to the beach. Yes, sand from our shoes was on the floorboards.) They said they were charging us $250 for cleaning the sand. $250!!!!!!!! You can detail a car which takes hours and pay a little over $100. I am fighting thisReviewed 3 Aug. 2017

Wouldn't rent from them againPros:Van pickup was quick. About a 10 minute drive from the airport.Cons:When I picked up the car, I told them I would be returning it in 15 hours. They NEVER mentioned how I would be charged. Instead I was charged for 2 whole days instead of 1 day plus 3 hours. Also, they put a $200 charge on my Amex the day I rented and that has not been refunded yet either.Reviewed 22 Oct. 2017

Pros:Sales lady was cool.Cons:But she was new give her a week and she will be as jaded as the pockmarked chick with straight hair that wouldn't even acknowledge me as i waited for 15 minutes at the desk to rent a car. $200 hold for credit. $350 for debit. Great Value, Odd LocationPros:Quality vehicles, sharing fleet with Budget and Avis. Why pay more?Cons:The rather limited hours (7a-7p).are a bit of a drag. And it's 5 miles from the airport so expect a 10-15 min shuttle from the airport. It's a great deal if you live nearby!Reviewed 4 Jan. 2017

Horrible experienceCons:We decided to upgrade to a larger vehicle at check-in and were quoted one price. Then at drop off, the price had over tripled.
