Check the car thoroughly before driving off. Also get a local number so you can call the office directly when a problem arises - the main toll free number does not get you to a person, and often terminates after a handful of rings, causing you to call back and back again.
KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Scottsdale
Whether you’re bouncing between the many golf courses Scottsdale has to offer, venturing into Phoenix situated southwest of the city, or exploring Tonto National Forest, by renting a car you can do all of the above conveniently within your own timeframe. The area is best explored with a car, so enjoy the many great things Scottsdale has to offer by renting a car.
Travelers who arrive in Scottsdale at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will be pleased to know that there are several hire car agencies on the grounds. Start your journey free of stress by renting a car directly at the airport and be in Scottsdale in about twenty minutes via the N Scottsdale Road. The hire car center is located in its own building and there is a shuttle operating between the terminals and the hire center. The bus stops are outside the terminals, past the baggage claim area.
Especially during summer, monsoons can occur regularly in Scottsdale and the whole of Arizona, and they bring heavy rain showers, strong winds, and dust storms – all of which can severely impair visibility. Should you drive into such a monsoon, try to find a safe place to park the car and wait until it has abated. Also do not drive into flooded areas, usually marked with a warning sign, or the car can lose traction and you will need to be towed out of the flooded area.
Rush hours in Scottsdale occur at 6-9 am and 5-7 pm, where traffic, specifically between Scottsdale and Phoenix, can increase dramatically. Try to avoid driving through the city during these times, and especially when heading to the airport, allow plenty of extra time (at least two hours), so you don’t miss your flight.

FAQs about hiring a car in Scottsdale
What type of car is recommended for driving in Scottsdale?
It is always easier to maneuver through an unknown city with a smaller car instead of a large and bulky one. If possible, rent a compact car to be able to navigate through traffic, find parking, and also pay a lower weekly rate in most cases. When planning to drive to the national forest or explore the natural surroundings, opt for a 4-wheel-drive car for the best traction.
What’s the speed limit in Scottsdale?
It is important to always check posted speed limit signs and follow their listed speed limit. Generally, speed limits are 25 mph in residential areas, 65 mph on divided rural highways, and up to 75 mph on freeways and interstates. On the I-10 into Phoenix there is a Safety Corridor, which are lanes where accidents are more likely to occur and law enforcement is very strict (you could already get fined for going one or two miles over the speed limit).
Where are the best places to park in Scottsdale?
There are free parking opportunities available in Scottsdale, for example in the 1st Ave Lot or Pepperwood Lot, but keep in mind that parking is restricted to two hours. In the Old Town, there are also plenty of garages and on-street parking spots available, but during the day on-street parking may be hard to find, so opting for the 3rd Ave parking garage, for instance, may be a better option.

Never again will I go with Hertz. I called at 11am, to make sure the car would be ready. No answer, I call Scottsdale, they said they will be ready but ton car has been dropped off yet. I call at 113”. No answer. I get to Scottsdale location. No car. It’s now Noon, the rental place is closed. No one is answering, Scottsdale airport starts calling around, no managers will answer. I call customer service. They start YELLING at me!! I was reassured by phone the Friday before my trip and the Saturday before I picked up my car it would be ready no problem. They told me because I wasn’t flying in to the airport on a personal liner, I wouldn’t be able to have a car. I told them it was ridiculous, it shouldn’t matter if I was flying in or driving up, I made these arrangements and spoke with someone who verified it wouldn’t matter and that a car would be there. I ended up calling 6x to customer service as the first 4 hung up on me and one lady told me I’d have to start calling around to other Herrz locations to see if any of them would be willing to help me and accommodate my rental. I called Mesa, Phoenix, Tempe, Glendale and Gilbert. NO ONE PICKED UP THE PHONE. I finally called customer service back and told them cancel everything and that I didn’t want to be charged for canceling as this was not my fault. She told me “I’m sorry to hear that. But it looks like your reservation was lost and they forgot your car. You’ve been cancelled, bye now” and ended the call. I was so upset I was shaking and crying. Unbelievable, never ever again.

Ended up leaving because Hertz employee said they didn’t currently have any cars and were waiting for returns. Also continuously told customers “there’s only 2 of us working”. So no vehicles and lack of employees to handle the business…. Not a great look. Walked to Enterprise down the road and was put in a vehicle within 30 minutes without reservation.

Supplier choice
They did not have a car for me when I arrived and had to come back for one later. Then I was given an electric car that wouldn’t charge. When I tried calling, the phone was never answered no matter how many times I called. I ended up having to miss work to return the rental early and go with another company for car. Would never rent from them again.

Fast check-in & convenient drop-off. Car - Mitsubishi Mirage - had terrible front-end wobble at 70-75 mph and pulled to left at elevated speeds.

Return at airport super easy. Pickup frustrating as they did not have a car. I returned 2 hours later and got a car but not my preference.
If you're looking for a rental experience that actually keeps pace with a busy schedule, this was it. We picked up our car at a Scottsdale, AZ location, and the vehicle was in good shape and a great price. It handled the desert heat and the drive out west like a pro. The real MVP move, though, was the drop-off at LAX. We all know that airport can be a gauntlet, but this was remarkably seamless. We literally just pulled in, dropped the car, and left the keys. No paperwork headaches or standing around. The best part? The shuttle was parked and waiting for us the second we stepped out. We were at our terminal in under five minutes. If you’re doing a point-to-point trip through the Southwest, this is the way to do it. Very, very good experience.
They canceled my reservation the same day on the weekend of my engagement. They said they did not have a twelve seater available like I booked and offered a Rav 4. I asked for a callback to discuss how I would be compensated for this big inconvenience to my family and did not receive any communication. Terrible experience
