Pros:Very dissapointed. Arrived after 11PM as my reservation stated and no staff to be found, no indications to follow and no phone number to call.Cons:Everything. Luckily competitors did had staff overnight and saved the day.Reviewed 26 Jan. 2021

Dependable VehiclesPros:I liked the car. It was a newer Nissan Sedan. It was as clean and the perfect size car for my needs.Cons:The cost crippled me. I was visiting my daughter who is receiving treatment in Prescott Valley. I flew in from DFW to Vegas for a 5 hour layover, then to Phoenix. After an 11 hour day at three different airports, I still had to drive from Phoenix to Prescott Valley. All I had was my debit card,m, so I was charged more. The cost of the car was booked at $160 for the 4 day rental. I ended up paying $286, wiping out more than 2/3 of my travel budget. I could not afford the car, but had no other options. Though grateful to have transportation at all, it would have been nice to have the difference of $130+ dollars to spend on food and things to do with my daughter.Reviewed 13 Feb. 2018

Cons:Had to take a Mustang convertible instead of the econobox I had reserved. Many would have welcomed this, but the car was not designed to maximize the intended use of a car, namely, transportation. It had too much power, had miserable driver visability, poor gas milage, and posed a risk for theft. Not complaining, but when you mature to the realization that such automotive affectations are a surrogate marker of the driver's personality deficits, you regress toward a "get me from here to there safely, cheaply, and effectively" mentality.Reviewed 15 Mar. 2020

Pros:Aziz was the friendliest rental Agent I’ve interacted with. While friendly, he was still swift and got me on my way. He also seemed to have the same effect on the customer before me. This was one of the best experiences I’ve had and, while this may sound super sales-y, I will definitely look at Avis brands first when booking my cars from now on.Cons:Nothing! Cons:Waited in line for over an hour and the one and only guy working managed to check out 4 people. A manager came out and apologized for the wait and said they were doing all they could and then, instead of helping her employee, simply disappeared. Cancelled my reservation while I was in line and went elsewhere. In the time I booked a whole new car and left the building, Payless managed to help one more person. Cons:While we had a reservation, when we arrived in Phoenix " on-time" they informed us they did not have a car for us but "may" have one if we could wait 5 hours! Really?? This is the second experience with Payless and the exact same thing happened. They did not offer to allow us to get another more expense car for the same price... nothing. He put our name on a sticky note and wrote down my cell phone. No help other than telling us to go to another rental car company who might have some cars. That place had cars but charged us almost double the amount per day to get a car. We could not wait, so we got screwed over and had to pay more and the process took several hours to even get that to happen. NEVER AGAIN! Kayak should consider dropping Payless or maybe we shouldn't be using Kayak either. I see another person had a car for 3 weeks for $300.... we paid over $500 to have a car for 5 days! Reservation not honored - claimed delayed systemPros:Agent said the system took hours to update and that my reservation through kayak (booked almost 2 hours earlier) was not in the system. He then said they had no economy cars and I had to either wait two more hours to see if they system would update or pay for an SUV. I had to pay more since I had a long drive ahead of me and wasn't willing to wait until 8PM to see if the reservation decided to update. Very poor tech and would not book with payless again. Poor customer servicePros:The car ran ok and did not break down.Cons:The size car I reserved was not available. Would only give me a bigger car for the full price upgrade. Gave me a smaller car for a reduction in price equal to what the car cost would be. Charged me for insurance I did not ask for. Had to drive 25 miles back to the airport in rush hour conditions to correct their error. Would not fix over the phone. Car had multiple scratches and dents on the outside, big stain on the back seat. Had to go over in detail so I did not get charged when I turned back in.Reviewed 19 Mar. 2017

poor serviceCons:we rented a car at Payless at Phoenix international airport. On the second day, we had an unexpected accident and got hit by an overspeeding car when we were crossing a stop sign. we were informed by the police that for situations like these, rental company will send along a replacement car. we did not get a replacement car. we were asked to go back to the rental place. a staff went into a boss's office for 30 minutes, came out, and told us our contract was forced to be canceled. they refuse to rent us a new car, and because of the canceled contract, we were fined a day rate that was 4 times the original day rate promised on the original rental agreement. we called payless to ask if it's the company's general policy to treat customers who are invovled in accidents like this. It's been 5 days and we haven't hear from them, which they promised to get back to us in 72 hours. throughout the entire communication, the "boss" never came out of his/her office. all decisions were made without discussion, official explanation, or consent.Reviewed 17 Jan. 2017

Pros:I have no complaints with the staff, they were friendly and courteous. There could have been a person on the lower level where the cars are located to assist locating your car. especially when it is parked in a different location.Cons:To start, trying to find the car was goofy, you are in a basement poorly lit and the particular stall the car was in was in another section of the building. The row ended and picked up in another location with no signage for directions or arrows.After a long flight I was not prepared to walk in circles scratching my head wondering where the heck the car was. Thank goodness the basement was not packed with cars, however there were enough to have me wandering aimlessly for a bit. The car rental would have been better if there was a legal registration on the car instead of an expired tag. The registration expired at the end of 2019 nearly two months overdue. Washed the window one time and was listening to the low fluid alarm for the whole time we were driving the car. Kinda irritating. When I have a short term rental of a automobile I do not expect to have to maintain it. Would I rent from Payless again? The jury is still out.Have to think awhile. Should I have checked the tags? I guess so, however I do have some expectations when I rent a car. Thank goodness we have law enforcement officers who do!!!Reviewed 13 Feb. 2020
