Top tips for hiring a car at Chicago O'Hare Airport

  • As one of the world’s busiest airports, a car hire at Chicago O’Hare Intl Airport (ORD) will make a great option to avoid the crowds and busy public transport transit systems, especially if you have a lot of luggage to carry, or you are travelling as a group. It could also work out as a more economical option if you consider the relatively inexpensive fuel prices. At just 17 miles from the centre of Chicago city, you can reach the city in just over 20min directly from Interstate 190, which is conveniently located next to the airport, and you can drive in comfort to your chosen destination.
  • The road system around Chicago is exceptionally good and you can connect to many major highways directly from the airport with your hire car. From the Interstate 190 on leaving the airport, you can merge with the Rosemont motorway interchange in just a couple of miles, heading east where you can then connect to other routes in all directions to reach other parts of Illinois. The Interstate 294 will take you to both north and south regions and if you take the Interstate 55, you can explore southern Illinois and connect on to neighbouring Missouri this way. Interstates are wide and well-maintained, making for a smooth journey and Chicago city’s grid-style roads are easy to navigate.
  • On your return to drop off your car hire at Chicago O’Hare Intl Airport, you can find a unique multi-level refuelling facility for a quick turn-around and 12 electrical charging points if needed. If you are approaching the airport on Interstate 190, take exit 2A, and the Mannheim Road north ramp, which will lead you back onto Zemke Boulevard to access the fuel points and to return your car hire back to the Multi-Modal facility.
  • It may be worth bearing in mind, the busiest times at Chicago O’Hare Airport are usually on a Monday, Thursday, and Friday with most of the traffic between 06:00-08:00 in the morning and again in the afternoon between 15:00-17:00. Try to avoid these hours if possible and take advantage of the late-morning, early-afternoon lull, to ensure a smoother process without the extra congestion.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire at Chicago O'Hare Airport for $100 or less
  • Book your car hire at Chicago O'Hare Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Everything about my experience felt average, but the most frustrating part about it was the USB cable connection for the front seat. It is far too sensitive and disconnects easily. It is likely a faulty or damaged port. The pickup while on cruise control is unsafely slow.

Horrible experience. They never included in the rental agreement that I would have a $500 deposit, and they tried to charge my card so many times that it blocked it. It was very smelly and I was charged for going to Wisconsin because my grandfather was dying and they charged me a large fee. That was never on the reservation and they said I would get it at the airport but I was forced to take a bus to the rental.

My original request specifically asked for 7, due to needing room for 4 adults. 2 baby seats and of course luggage for 6 people. The car I was given was “same” class. Not sure how things are “classed” grouped together. , but we had already had an interesting conversation on the coverage on the car. I was treated like “you should read”. Let me tell you. After spending an incredible amount on insurance and given to see that you can’t fit with your family and luggage, it’s falling out the back. Had it stacked where we couldn’t see out the back window. Finally put two bags in with passengers. Since we did everything on the internet, which your website kept asking for the car rental fee, like starting from scratch. I thought I could resolve it at the desk, but agent really couldn’t understand that I was puzzled on another window that popped up as I was attempting to complete. If I was going to buy insurance, if I understood your website, since I was told to “read” your website and that’s all that mattered. Running out of space. I would never rent again. I called an UBER. That sent a car large enough . UBER has my vote.

We rented from chicago airport agreeing to return at Milwaukee. I explicitly asked the staff to confirm the return location at Milwaukee will be open at 4-5pm. Then I was surprised, the location was closed and no instructions for overnight return, no one answering calls at Hertz. I ended up returning at the next closest location which is the Milwaukee airport. Then I get a surprise bill of $450 instead of the negotiated rate of $160 on July 6. I am working to charge back that transaction with the credit card company. Hertz doesn't answer customer service calls anyway.

They added hidden fees and charged me for gas even though I had returned the tank with more than I left it with. You expect to pay a premium with Hertz so that you don’t have to deal with chasing their customer service. It is truly useless to have a smooth pickup process if it means that you’ll have to track them down later because they charged you the price you paid ahead of time over in fees. Very disappointing.

Tried to up sell us into a more expensive car. I declined. When we got to the garage, the car they assigned us to was not ready and we had to wait 30 minutes before they could update the system so we could get any car. also the pricing was not clear. I was told if I prepaid for gas then I wouldn't have to fill up but instead I'd be charge the price per gallons for the n# of gallons I needed. I looked at my receipt and I was charged a full tank of gas even though I only needed a quarter tank.

First I think is very bad that if you as a company charge for the extra driver, you should say it,is first time for me with this situation with a car rental, that being said I paid the extra driver and the person who I spoke told me the final charges that I would have, and for my surprise I have more charges in my card, I ended up paying 300 dollars more than the 500 dollars of the original charge,I received a late fee,I don't even know why,if I deliver the car at the rigth time, and I only wanted to pay for the daily tools, wich on top on everything I end up paying a tool in Chicago because the car didn't pass,I'm very disappointed and I don't think I'll use fox rental anymore.

I rented a car for the price of 520$. When we arrived at the counter, due to some sort of bank problems, my credit card didn't work. The solutions given by the employee, was to pay for an extra driver at the rate of 15$ a day (making a total of 75$) and use a different credit card to pay the total. We accept this condition and a total of 387.71$ was payed at the counter because the indian thieve working at ORD airport add some type of insurance that we said SEVERAL TIMES we didn't want. The scammer told us the money would be returned to us as soon as we get the car back but of course it didn't happen. This is pure scamming! A company this size doesn't need this kind of publicity but I'll make sure I'll write everywhere I can about this unless my money is returned! I pay for the car, I pay for the extra driver but I want the money of a service I DIDN'T ASKED back. Disgraceful!

The biggest issue was a noise coming from the back of the vehicle when driving over 60 m/ hr. I contacted Dollar, but unfortunately, there were no locations anywhere near where I was. it was bothersome because I was hoping that the car wouldn’t break down in the middle of nowhere.

It is more what I did not like. The vehicle, a Jeep SUV, had no interior lights that worked when you opened the doors. But worse of all the tail lights did not work at night! That was dangerous and shows a lack of maintenance care by Payless. I was not happy.

Payless had a very smooth process with kind and friendly people, the car was very clean and in great condition. When I returned it, however, the person who marked the car as returned did not check whether I had filled the car up with gas (I had filled the car up with gas) and charged me for not doing it. The customer service team has been very helpful in getting that false charge removed. Would recommend Payless

Everything was very confusing at pickup and drop off. The cars are collocated with Avis and Budget but the people and information are not. No instructions in my booking email, and poor signage at the O’Hare car rental facility meant that my wife and I wasted precious time wandering around searching for answers.
