Self-Defeating Discrimination Against Local RenterPros:Absolutely nothing.Cons:Advantage's JFK location refused to honor my reservation because I don't my own car with full insurance and live within a 60 mile radius. In other words, they're an NYC car rental place that refuses to rent cars to NYC residents - why else would we be renting a car in our own city?! Most of us, by nature of living here, go through the airport rental experience a couple of times a year when we need a car for short regional trips that the bus or train won't help with. I've never had this issue before; Advantage's customer rep literally mocked me and told me I had to "read the fine print." That's not fine print...it's a pretty major and unusual caveat, and possibly wouldn't hold up in court. I took my business next door to Dollar, and in the hour I waited in their shared vestibule for a car to be ready saw 4 others at Advantage deal with the same asinine policy. Because of Advantage, I nearly missed a wedding; I witnessed others after me left stranded when Dollar ran out of cars, too.Reviewed 14 Nov. 2016

Advantage - Eze Pass UsuryCons:We were very angry and disappointed that we were faced with a 145% increase in our cost to rent our car due to the exhorbitant premium for an EZE Pass for the week. We were expecting to pick up our car, having already paid the rental charges and be on our way. We were then informed that if we were going thru tolls, we would be unable to pay cash. Unless we paid for the EZE pass ($226 incl taxes and fees) then we would be charged $25 for each time we went thru a toll plus the cost of the toll. We were staying with family in Arverne meaning frequent use of tolls. We were astounded - how can that kind of premium be added at pickup with no warning (e.g. we had booked the car 2 months in advance with no notice re additional cost of EZE pass.. We were also treated with shame and guilt that we would even question these charges. We would like some explanation why you would inflict this kind of usury on an unsuspecting client who rented from you in good faith. We would ask for an adjustment to the EZE portion of our bill and direct communication with the executive in your company who chose to set these rates. Chris & Charleen EvansReviewed 9 Mar. 2018

Pros:The gas tank lid activation switch broke and I was unable to refill the car. No roadside assistance was available so I had to drive 60 miles to the closest agency and when I got there They would not give me another car as their rentals had paper plates and they would not be legal in New York. I demanded they open the lid which they did with a crowbar but then refused to document it as they were afraid of internal reprisal from superiors for doing it. Fortunately so far I have not been charged for this fiasco but never again with this group of amateurs. Terrible customer service from start to finish.Reviewed 22 Dec. 2016

Nice people at a nice facility; toll tag is highway robberyPros:Nice staff, reasonable priceCons:Toll tag came up to LITERALLY almost the same price as the rental! If a cross of the RFK is 15 + 25 penalty. If you cross a few toll sites in the city you're going to wind up under-water in fees. Or you can pay (in my case) $100 when your fee burn would have been 75. Toss in a few other tolls upstate I figured it was a wash. But man, I'm buying a toll tag even though I don't own a car in NYC. The car's HI windshield wiper stopped in the middle of a downpour. I was panicked and had to slow the car and hit the hazards. That's scary on a tri-state highway. My fast-thinking passenger reached and turned the wipers down to LO and we made it thru the city. Don't know if it was the car or the maintenance, but I'm never driving that make or model again.Reviewed 5 Feb. 2018

Ridiculous locals policyPros:Nothing, I didn’t end up renting a car with advantage and their service was terribleCons:The “local renters” policy is ridiculous. You have to bring proof of ownership of a personal car?! This is NYC, nobody owns cars! Or you have to provide proof of a return ticket to book as a normal rental customer. Here’s a tip, if there is required information-like a return ticket number-ask me to provide it during booking, not once I’ve already made all the effort to get to your business. And don’t give your customers a bad attitude when your website and booking clearly didn’t convey the message properly.Reviewed 23 Oct. 2017

Bad DayCons:From the beginning I had a horrible experience !! I rented a midsize and they gave me a compact/economy without adjusting the price. Then the agent I think his name was Akeem he was a heavy set African American with short dreads who was on his phone texting the entire time I'm talking to him ..... He made me swipe my card three times without informing me that if it doesn't go through I wouldn't be able to use that card again and my bank flagged it as a fraud charge what if I didn't have any other card I could have just called my bank and informed them I'm out of town and the card would have went through ..... To make matters worse I had to wait an hour to get a car I was charged for a rental at 10am and didn't get a car until 11:15am which was just ridiculous I didn't get a sorry or anything they gave me my keys and walked off I rent from advantage every month but this will honestly be my last time renting with you guys I'm very disappointed. The agents lack of customer service and one on one interaction just shows that nobody cares and there lack of customer serviceReviewed 11 Jan. 2017

Local renter policy?!Cons:I became aware of a ridiculous local renter policy as I was on Advantage's counter to get the car. As I live in NYC and was renting from Advantage in NYC, they consider me a "local renter". The companyt has a policy that obliges a local renter to: 1. Own a car; 2. Have a comprehensive insurance for the owned car; 3. Present the insurance terms & conditions to Advantage. If any of the conditions above are not met, Advantage denies you the rental. Why in the hell would I rent a car if I own one? I ended up renting from Dollar.Reviewed 20 Dec. 2016

terrible car/servicePros:the process of booking onlyCons:they had 3 bookings when we arrived at counter??Car was a standard size, ordered full.Car was dirty and parked tight to other cars, and on the inspection I missed the driver side underneath had some damage, easily missed do to the angel of view point.Upon return this was pointed out, I had to file a claim, stating I did not have any incident at all and this damage was there prior and do to the white car being dirty and poorly positioned was easily missed on the inspection.I will never use advantage ever again! I travel a lot and have rented cars many times and by far this was the poorest expreince..Reviewed 28 Jan. 2018

I didn’t get the car I rentedCons:Your website said nothing about advantage needing a $200 deposit on top of he payment I already paid to you. My confirmation said it was pre-paid in full. I didn’t have enough credit to hold he deposit and therefore did not receive the car I rented. This was very upsetting. You should really state deposit information clearly and in bold when a person is booming through your site. I purchased insurance through your site and would like it refunded ($18) if possible. I wasted my time and close to $50 in transportation fees to get to and from the rental location.Reviewed 26 Feb. 2018
