Cons:By the time we got to the Hertz pickup counter at JFK at 1230 am, there were at least 30 people in line before us and only two customer service agents. After waiting in line for 45 minutes without any movement whatsoever, we eventually decided to call a cab. Of course, with your convenient pre-pay option we were unable to obtain a refund, so I ended up paying full price for a car I did not end up able to use. I would expect my customer service experience at one of the largest airports in the country, using a rental company that is one of the most prominent, to be much more usable. It was ridiculous to only have two counters open and expect us to wait what was going to be at least two hours in the middle of the night. If I was offered a refund or any sort of recompense I would consider using your company again, but I don't think that's very likely.Reviewed 15 May 2017

Long line at pickupPros:While I wait on a long, extremely slow line, for over 30 minutes, I see on the tv screen behind the hertz reps (use out automated kiosk to save time) which is very frustrating when all of the machines are inoperative In addition - the hertz gold desk is not open - so those gold members were voicing their frustrations To also have customer service leave their stations to go into a back room for what appears to be a break while customers continue to wait and get more and more frustrated. Car was good - though dirty and not washed before giving to me - but the services was horrible. I will likely not use hertz againReviewed 6 Mar. 2017

Pros:The hertz counter at JFK airport was great. The person was nice and it was a smooth process.Cons:The booking at Canandaigua was scheduled to drop off after hours. But the Canandaigua location wasn’t incredibly difficult to see at night since it was just a small sign in a window of a building that was primarily for another company. Then the out of hours drop box had no sign is was for hertz. It was plastered with the logo of the company that clearly was the main company of the building. When I felt uncomfortable with dropping the key in an unmarked (with hertz) drop box, I received these crazy suggestions to just lock the keys in the car but that I would be charged for an unlock fee. One rep told me the Canandaigua location was not an after hours location whereas another rep did say that was the case. I offered to bring the car back the neck day so that I could safety and comfortably return the car but was told I would incur a late fee. In all - while hertz was willing to talk to me, they did not seem to have it fully together when trying to give their car back to them and the suggested solutions seemed inappropriate while the right solution (have a branded after hours drop off box) did not exist.Reviewed 13 Oct. 2019

Horrible customer service. $750 for one day - never again!Pros:The car was nice and efficient.Cons:I was treated poorly by the representative. It cost me $750 for a sub compact Nissan Versa for one day! This was the only car available, other cost even more money. This is absurd and I was forced to rent this car due to having a time critical meeting to get to. Never again will I book with Hertz or Kayak.Reviewed 24 Aug. 2018

Cancelled Reservation - Received Almost No RefundPros:Ease of cancelling & recommendation to call insurance company and cancel as well.Cons:No mention of penalties. When I called Hertz they said it was Kayak (the booking company) who took a penalty, but Kayak referred me back to Hertz. Hertz was the charge card on my credit card. For a $130 reservation, I was refunded $30, even though the penalty for cancelling on the Hertz website is $50 and I still ended up booking a rental through them that very next day. I only had to cancel & rebook because Hertz would not let me change my reservation. I DEMAND my refund of $130, not $30. The reason my information was incorrect is because I asked for a rental in Manhattan. You guys returned me a rental at 135 140th street. I assumed that was Harlem, but it ended up being Jamaica Queens (almost 30 miles outside of Manhattan). So I had to book a more expensive rental from JFK. You still got more money out of me for your mistake, now be an honorable company and refund me my initial reservation amount. I didn't even complain about the hour & a half we had to wait in line at JFK because you people don't know how to properly staff an airport rental desk. I will never rent from Hertz again. I'm so glad other choices exist.Reviewed 21 Jun. 2017

Worst rental EVER!Pros:Car was fineCons:Price was raised extremely high due to delays into New York. 1 agent working counter after 11pm. She took 20 min per person with an avg of 15 in line. That's an hour wait for every 3 people. We were 5th. Others waited for 30 min before she would tell them no cars were left. Also no one outside checking in cars. They had to come in and wait also. I thought this may be unusual but when we returned the car at 6 pm it was the same. 2 day rental almost $300 added one day cost another $198. I would never never recommend Hertz to anyone. A requested alternate drop off would have been over $400 more. Do not rent from Hertz in JFK.Reviewed 17 Jul. 2017

Cons:All is well, machines, speed of issue and return. One remark. Many employees speak poor English and do not try to achieve understanding with a foreign client. I was insured with insurance, although I explained that I do not need it, because I did not need insurance. The bank provides this service when renting a car abroad. They seemed to understand me, but nevertheless they issued insurance. Unfortunately. I was tired after a long flight and did not check the papers. I understand that my fault and I can not make a claim, but the unpleasant residue has remained.Reviewed 26 Aug. 2018

Service to be improvedPros:The car, it was clean and good performanceCons:The diversity in JFK, is not a big as in Orlando, the girl in the from desk wants to obligate you to adquiere additional insurances in a way that intimidates the user, and at the end if she doesn't sell the insurance she gets angry and offer a very poor serviceReviewed 26 Sep. 2017

SHAME on HERTZ!Pros:Sadly NOTHING of my experience was positive. Please read below to get the FULL STORY. And forgive the occasional all-caps but you'll understand when you read my tale of woe. ThanksCons:Do yourself a favor and learn from my oh so TRAGIC experience, and it was the single WORST car rental experience in my LIFE. I took a red-eye into JFK - NYC. Got in at 6:30am. When I made my reservation on Kayak, I mistakenly did not specify my pick up time so it defaulted to noon - my bad. So the night before the flight I called Hertz and changed my pickup time to 6am. The customer service said that it was all taken care of, no problem. When I arrived at the Hertz counter in NY they said my pickup time is 12 noon and they have no car for me. I have to wait until noon. Despite my explanation that their phone representative changed my pickup time they said no can do. What they did offer me, if I didn't want to wait (uh, no, I'd love to wait over 5 hours and spend it with the "it's 6:30am and I don't care about you Hertz staff) , I could PAY MORE and get another car to take now. I once again explained it was their customer service that bungled my time change, but I got a NO CAN DO. Without any options I PAID MORE and got an "upgrade" - from mid-size to full size. I was alone so I didn't need or want a slightly bigger car. Next, the interior of the car was DIRTY. I got black stuff on my hands from the sticky steering wheel. And a spilled drink was dried up on the middle console. So I drove to the checkout kiosk and told the Hertz staff that my car was dirty inside. She literally said in a very rude tone "that's not my job, I've got nothing to do with that". So I made a U turn and went to the check in lane. I told the Hertz staff my car was dirty and the guy said the SAME thing then walked off. I swear there is an end to this so bear with me - it gets even better. So I take out my luggage and go back to the Hertz desk. I told them about the dirty car and the rude employees and they readily gave me another car that I still had to PAY MORE for. Fast forward to check out. I bring the car back and nobody is directing people into the checkout lanes. I go behind the lane with most cars to get in line while others arrive and go right to the front of all the other lanes expecting to check out before those who were waiting in line. There is only ONE checkout person and a mass of cars with unhappy customers waiting and having to figure out who was there first. Finally I get out of there. I call HERTZ to relay my experience and all the customer service offers is a voucher for the next rental. But I'm NEVER renting from Hertz again so that means nothing to me. Also, they won't even refund me the EXTRA I had to pay when the pickup change was "all taken care of, no problem". No problem? ONLY PROBLEMS. Next, I'm told that if I want any charges reduced on my bill, I need to deal with JFK HERTZ directly and discuss with the manager. So I call JFK HERTZ to speak with a manager and am given an answering machine saying that they will call me back within 4 hours. THEY NEVER CALLED BACK. SHAME ON YOU HERTZ and learn from my unfortunate experience.Reviewed 11 Sep. 2016
