GratefulPros:I had someone else make my travel arrangements for me because my brother passed away unexpectedly and I was not in the right mindset. When I arrived at the Franklin Park, IL location I soon realized that they had made it for the wrong date. The gentleman that was assisting me did everything in his power to make things right for me and did it in a very timely manner. I could not have been more grateful for his true hospitality during a very hard time. Thank you for being there when I needed it most.I will always use Payless Car Rental if given the option.Reviewed 31 Aug. 2017

Not enough space for my entire complaint...Pros:I have used this Payless facility several times in the past few months, and I have always had a positive experience. This was quite an exception. I was made to feel like an annoying inconvenience, not a paying customer. Airport pickup took much longer than it had in the past, so I called the Payless Chicago O’Hare telephone number. I was greeted by one of those automatic telephone-trees, and it took quite a while to get to “For questions about airport-shuttle transportation, press something else.” I was then routed to a different automatic telephone-tree, with a different voice, but the same questions from the beginning. After more than two and a half minutes of automatic telephone-tree fun (I looked at my cell-phone’s timer), I reached a human who simply said that the van would arrive at Vestibule 1E within 15 to 20 minutes. (Two and a half minutes may not sound like a long time, but when you’re on a telephone tree, it’s painful.) The van arrived six minutes later—better than I was told to expect—and I mentioned to the driver that I was in a significant time-crunch. As the van continued its route through the other two terminal stops, the additional passengers' luggage was piled on top of mine, and I was asked to move further into the van. When we reached the Payless location, everyone else's stuff came off first, and even though I was the first passenger to board the shuttle, and even though I identified my time situation, I ended up last off, and last in line. I stood in that line for 26 minutes, and 19 minutes of it was standing second in line with no movement. (I timed it.) I was not the only person in line who was becoming irritated—we were all becoming annoyed with the wait.Cons:In order to save time when I reached the counter, I politely told the agent that I was in a rush and that I didn't need a fuel plan or any additional insurance. She seemed disinterested, and told me that it didn't matter and that she would still be asking me all of those questions. When we completed the process, she disappeared for four minutes and then returned with a set of keys. Before she gave me the car, she stood in front of me holding the keys in her right hand as it rested on the counter in front of me, and turned her head to the side to hold an unrelated conversation with another employee for an additional minute or so. Then, without even looking at me, she said "First row, spot 704, it's a Silver Ford Focus," left the keys on the counter, and called for the next person in line. When I got to the car, it had a four-inch dent above the front right wheel well. I returned to the office to report the damage, and the woman rolled her eyes at me. She told me to mark it on the form, she initialed it, and then she turned back to her conversation without saying a word. I asked "Excuse me, are we finished?," and she responded "What?" I asked again, and she dismissively replied "Yeh," and waived the back of her hand at me. The car performed well, but when I arrived at the BP station across the street from the Payless office to refuel the car prior to return and after driving 13.8 miles, the car took nearly three gallons. It works out to 5.3 mpg. The focus is rated at 30-42 mpg, depending on city versus highway driving, and I’m aware that other factors affect performance, but either there is something very wrong with the car, or Payless gave me a car with a fuel gauge reading full, but a tank missing two gallons. I believe it’s the latter. There were no attendants at the drop-off spot to meet me and take the car, so I went inside of the Payless station to return the keys. There were several employees behind the counter, but only one appeared to be doing anything, and so I had to wait in line again to hand in the keys to the rental car while that lone, working agent processed and delivered cars to several other customers. The shuttle driver that finally returned me to the airport was polite and efficient, and did his best to assist me in catching my flight. He seemed to recognize my frustration, and was almost apologetic in his approach, although none of my frustration was due to him. Overall, this was not a good experience.Reviewed 29 Oct. 2017
