Pros:Very clean carCons:Over $100 dollars extra in 'airport fees' which were NOT included in the price at the time of online reservation. Pressure to buy additional but useless insurance. Price of return with full gas tank included in the bill without asking me. Basically the personnel add as much as they possibly can to the price once you're at the rental place which is a couple of miles from the airport and its up to the renter to look through the bill and cross off what they don't want. Pros:Almost everything was fantastic. Customer service was timely and pleasant...there were only two of us in line, but there was no effort to put me off. Drop-off was easy and also quick. No receipt provided at drop-off, told I would receive via email. I filled the car with gas before turn-in...haven’t seen the receipt yet, but do hope I wasn’t charged for gas as that appears to be a problem for some.Cons:Getting the email receipt for the car rental facility is far from timely. When traveling for business in particular this receipt is critical for expense reports and a delay in the receipt costs money in disbursement lag, AND is frustrating. For this reason alone, I would generally rate lower, but the rest of the service and the car itself was really very good.Reviewed 11 Nov. 2020

MehPros:Nice, clean car. Good shuttle and pleasant driversCons:Very inefficient pickup and dropoff at ORD. The clerk does some slow paperwork, goes out to find a car, washes it, comes back after 10 minutes to do more paperwork, goes back to the car to get the VIN, comes back and finishes the documentation. Dropoff was equally "stoneage", with an uninterested agent entering details on the computer, while more interested in talking to her coworker, going out to the car to check fuel level, while still talking to other staff, coming back and very slowly entering more data. In the mean time, the shuttle drivers says "lets go, lets go".Reviewed 11 Jan. 2017

Not very impressed....Pros:The car itself was comfortable and easy to drive.Cons:The staff there was very unfriendly and not helpful. I arrived and they tried to charge me more than the price I was quoted, by an additional $60.00! When I complained, the man said he would change it in the computer. When I informed him that would not do, that I wanted it in writing, he scowled and gave me a nasty look. Yesterday at drop off their printer was not working, so they said they would email me a receipt. Guess what? No receipt as of yet. Now I have to go and call and track it down. Dirty, smiley car!Cons:Our car smelled like smoke from the moment we opened the door. It was not fully cleaned (crumbs, dirt, etc). I looked in the middle console as we were driving down the highway and noticed several large pieces of a bud from a marijuana plant! I brought this up when we returned the car and was told to contact the general manager. Filthy car, smelled like cigarettes (I kept worrying our 3 yo and 8 month old we're going to suffer from second hand smoke) and filled with weed...so unprofessional and gross! OKPros:The car was what I expected. Pickup and drop off is relatively easy. The location is off airport but not too far way. Only takes ~5min by the shuttle.Cons:When I picked up the car, they put the gas option on my rental although I didn't ask for it in my quote. They said it would be taken off from my final payment if I returned the car with full gas. However when I returned the car (with a full tank of gas), they couldn't take the charge off, the agent tried a few times but their computer system didn't allow him to do so. I had to catch my flight, so the agent told me that he would ask someone else to help later. They eventually managed to give me the refund, but not all of them (only a few dollars off). I Left Before RentingPros:The van driver was polite and friendly. The people working the vans and the lot are obviously working hard. The price I was quoted was outstanding.Cons:This location is about a 10-min drive from the airport... farther than I expected. The line at the counter was way too long. After waiting about 20 min, I realized that it might be another 20, and I got concerned. As I was waiting, another customer came in to get help because their car wouldn't start, and a customer at the counter was getting annoyed because they didn't have the car type she booked. I called while in line and canceled, went back to the airport and rented from a different company. The extra $50 didn't look so big any more. I probably won't be back.Reviewed 4 Jun. 2018

You get what you (don't) pay forPros:Rates were good, and the car was clean, well-running, and reliable.Cons:The shuttle pick-up at the airport was by request, and it took a couple of tries to find the right number and navigate the voice-mail menu to make the request. You get charged for a full tank of gas no matter what -- no opt-out available -- and then refunded if you bring it back full. At least they told me this up front this time -- I rented once before and the agent added the charge without my knowledge or permission. The staff were polite and helpful enough, but the institutional attitude toward customer service seems rather casual. The capper was getting on the shuttle when I brought the car back and needed to get to the terminal. In single-digit cold and vicious wind chills, the shuttle driver pulled away as I was walking toward the vehicle. There was another shuttle behind him, but that one whizzed right past. I complained to an employee, who radioed the first shuttle driver. To his credit, he circled around the lot and came back. However, when we got to the terminal, the driver got into an argument with a family waiting for pick-up, and we passengers went around to the back, opened the cargo door, and got our luggage out ourselves. Payless GetlessPros:Car make and model was fine, had it been maintained and cleaned Staff was pleasantCons:1) Took 15 minutes for a shuttle to show up during which time all competitors had 3 or 4 buses or shuttles pass by 2) Rental location is quite a bit further from the airport than competitors 4) The car was very dirty with black foot marks on the passenger side dash board 5) It took a while to realize that the roaring tire noise that sounded like a pick up truck with giant off road tires was actually coming from our rental vehicle 6) The car had over 39,000 miles and my guess is that the original tires were still on the car. It snowed the first evening of our rental and the tires were almost bald. It was the one of the most treacherous and dangerous driving experiences I have ever had, and I grew up driving in Upstate NY with lots of snow. 7) Payless has only one rental location in all of Wisconsin, and it is not in Madison, so we were not able to swap out the car for another one. I have had much better luck with Hertz, National and Alamo out of Chicago O'Hare, and will not take another chance on Payless in the future.Reviewed 29 Nov. 2015
