Overall Bad ExperiencePros:Not much good to say. The lady that processed my return was friendly.Cons:(1) 1.5 hour wait to pick up a car is unacceptable, especially when you have reservation. This seemed to be caused by two issues: (a) The counter was tremendously understaffed. Two people struggled to serve a line of customers that stretched out the door. (b) It seems to me that Dollar/Thrifty is not primarily in the business of renting cars anymore. Alternatively, they are a high pressure sales organization focusing on selling insurance, prepaid tolls, and refueling options. The result is that unsuspecting customers take an inordinate amount of time to understand why their 200 dollar rental is suddenly 500 dollars. Even I, a seasoned renter saying no to all the gimmicks (except the prepaid tolls...more on that later), had to listen to sales pitch for insurance and fuel despite saying no from the beginning. It took about 5 minutes to process my rental, others took over 30 minutes mulling over options and upsales. (2) Car had a lot of, what appeared to be, cosmetic damage and no damage report to sign off on. Thankfully, I took a video of the car pre-rental. After being on the road about an hour, a plastic fender panel was flapping in the wind. I stopped and was able to pop it back in temporarily and continue my trip. I reviewed my video, and sure enough it was damaged when I got it. I reported it upon return, and now I am waiting to get screwed over. Stay tuned. (3) The toll transponder that I paid 40+ dollars for two days was missing and I had to go back, fight my way to the crowded counter, and get one. I knew had 4 tolls on my trip...for about 18 dollars. Two are cashless. If you do not prepay for unlimited tolls, Dollar charges you 15 dollars per toll for cashless toll administration fees in addition to the actual toll. So my 18 dollars in tolls would cost me 48 dollars. So I bought the prepaid package, and hit every toll I possibly could just to rack up the charges. For instance, I would have taken the free 59th St bridge rather than the Triboro, but I hit that sucker twice. Cross the Hudson upstate and take the Taconic? Nah...Thruway and GWB! Other companies are much more reasonable with 3.95 each day you use the transponder plus actual tolls.Reviewed 26 Feb. 2018

Cons:So airport locations apparently only take debit cards if you have an airline ticket?!! Otherwise they only accept credit cards... I recently used my Citibank/MasterCard debit card to rent a car at another agency, and so assumed it would be ok. To my dismay, because I was renting the car to get to an event at which I was speaking, I was refused the rental and had to scramble back home to get a credit card and make a new reservation at a closer location (for times sake) that was twice as expensive as my original one. If the confirmation email had mentioned that only major credit cards could be used to make the rental, I would’ve had a much better experience.Reviewed 20 Sep. 2018

Pros:The car was good, held up wellCons:Dollar stands for "squeezing-every-dollar-they-can." They upcharged me 300% the initial rental price before I knew what was happening - they added "complete" insurance coverage at $70/day (I had already pre-purchased collision insurance, and thought the teller was just confirming this); EZ-Pass that is charged no matter if you use it or not, and a bogus gas refill charge that penalizes you for refueling the car. I was able to return it at empty just to spite them, but only just barely. They do this at the counter so you can't read the fine print, when you're already anxious about your trip and trying to get on your way. Absolute scammers, but it's impressive how good they are at it. You think you're getting a deal and suddenly they have more than double your money. My advice is to ignore anything they try to add at the counter. They'll second-guess and gaslight you; don't fall for it. If you're patient, ask for full documentation on the insurance and have them read it to you at the counter. At least the car itself was clean, and ran well.Reviewed 16 Feb. 2021

Pros:The car smelled like smoke but the in-lot attendant was very helpful with filing and even checked he would be the one receiving the car as well to ensure we wouldn’t be charged for the smoke.Cons:All of the booked car types were taken and we were forced to pay for an upgrade in order to get on the road.
