Horrible office and customer servicePros:2ndtime there. Understaffed, 1hr hour wait for a car, rudest woman I have ever met that assigns cars to you. I truly thought that a person like that would not be able to maintain her job with her level of uncaring, unprofessionalism, and out right controlling offensiveness. And there she was again for the second time! It was the holidays and understand that price gouging was occurring, to pay $125 per day for a tiny car was absurd. I may never use kayak again to Rent-A-Car, Hertz maybe expensive but at least they have good customer service.Cons:2ndtime there. Late Shuttle, Wrong Paperwork!Pros:Nothing.Cons:Everything. The shuttle from the airport arrived closer to every 20mins, and there was no help from the driver with bags. The line at the office was slow, with not enough staff, and I was given someone else's paperwork - only to learn that upon returning the vehicle. The vehicle was not clean - but neither were the three others I checked. Upon returning the car and learning someone else's name was on my paperwork, I would have had to wait in a line of 20 people with 1 service agent available, so I left. For the $5 I saved renting with Payless, I paid tenfold in loss of time, quality of service and hassle. I will never rent from these guys again.Reviewed 19 Dec. 2015

Nearly 3 hours at Payless/Fox to Get a Reserved CaPros:Some of the staff were polite and even tempered.Cons:There were huge lines and only one Payless agent, who disappeared for long stretches of time with no explanation to the customers waiting. It took about 45 minutes waiting in line even to meet with an agent. When finally at the counter, we were told that there were no cars available regardless of our reservation and that the wait for any car would be another 45 minutes. When we went out to the lot, there were about 40 angry or frustrated customers waiting for cars milling around. When I told an employee that he was amazingly calm and polite in the midst of this chaos, he said, "Thank you, but this happens all the time."Reviewed 30 Mar. 2017

Cons:The customer service aspect was terrible. Before returning the vehicle I called to see what was the process to extend the rental. The initial transfer was done without saying anything not a “hold on” “one moment” or anything like that. After being transferred multiple times I was eventually redirected to the main store. They never could give an actual amount of hoe much it would be to extend. Upon returning, the guy to scan the vehicle in miscommunicated where he wanted the vehicle. He then got into an argument with my passenger as if he was he driver. The service was terrible and not a pleasant experience. Payless rental will never see my business again no matter what their low rates may be.Reviewed 19 Oct. 2017

Horrible rental experiencePros:Car did get decent gas mileage. The people working outside when returning the car were very nice.Cons:The checking was the worst! We had a two hour wait after our rental reservation (stood in like from 12:30 am to 3 am). Limited car choices once we got checked in. Some cars had some stains on he interior. Scratches all over the outside of the car. One car we were going to choose smelled like cigarettes. We called the day before to check to see how long it would to return the car. We were on hold for 30+ minutes. The person in the phone told us it would take an hour and a half to return our car. It only took 2 minutes, so we had to spend another hour and a half then originally planned in the airport instead of at the beach.Reviewed 30 Mar. 2017

Shuttle service and customer service is a joke.Cons:Shuttle service to and from the airport is a joke. Waited 25 mintues at the airport for pickup while watching every other rental car company shuttle stop for pick up 5 or 6 times. Once we got there Payless counter had one person behind the counter and it took about another 45 minutes to get the car even though we were about the 5th person in line. Staff behind the counter were the only nice ones. After we received the key lady at the exit was listening to music with headphones was rude and nasty and seemed like she didn't want to be bothered. When returning the car the lady that checks the car over was also rude. Next time I might spend a little more and go somewhere with better customer service.Reviewed 4 May 2016

The car you reserved is not guaranteed, and you gePros:Good: 1. Shuttle bus is fairly quick 2. Rate is cheaper than other rental companies (besides bait & switch, you get what you pay for).Cons:Bad: 1. They advertised "Chevy Tahoe" under full size SUV. When we got there, they said Tahoe is Premium SUV (more $$). This is false advertising! 2. They didn't have any car in the class we reserved (no full size nor premium SUV..at all). They tried to get us to rent a minivan. Later on a Ford Explorer became available, but we had to wait for about one hour for it to get "washed". When we got it, the inside was still dirty. We didn't want to wait any longer so we just took it. 3. Car insurance rate was expensive and the coverage description was confusing. The "platinum" option was almost as much as the rate for the car (a few dollars difference). 4. Parking situation is confusing.. No parking in the front of the building sonI had to circle the whole block. There was no clear sign on where to park (not an issue for shuttle bus users).Reviewed 12 Jan. 2017

You get what you pay forPros:I got a Toyota Camry for a week for very little money.Cons:The shuttle from LAX to Payless/Fox car rental barely ran. There was at least a 30 minute wait for a shuttle, and the brand name larger companies' shuttles kept on coming and coming while we waited. Once we got to Payless, a man came in panting because, despite his flailing, the Payless shuttle passed him by, and he had to walk an extremely long distance to Payless after waiting over 30 minutes for the shuttle that ignored him. I was on the shuttle and saw him flail to no avail. Once we were processed at the counter, we were told to go into the lot to Section 6 where someone would further assist us. No one was there. Finally, the three of us (all in our 40s) figured out that the keys were in the cars and we were just supposed to choose one! There was a nasty cleaning glove left in the car, and thank goodness we didn't need to use the back seat, because the upholstery was extremely dirty. The return process was chaotic, with too many cars in one tiny area where we were told to pull up and were checked out. It was a long walk to the shuttle station, and a longer wait for the shuttle. Next time, I think I'll choose to spend a little more and get a little more for my money.Reviewed 17 Apr. 2016

You could not pay me to rent a car from here againPros:Nothing. Literally every part of the experience was terrible.Cons:It took them 40+ minutes to send a shuttle to the airport, and when I called to ask if they were sending one they said they send one every 10 minutes - clearly a lie. The shuttle was tiny and filthy and the shuttle ride took another 20+ minutes. The line at the rental counter had about 4 people in it when I arrived - but it took the 2 disgruntled employees working the counter almost an hour to move through them. When I was finally directed to the cars, there weren't any cars available, even though I had a reservation and they did not mention this when I was paying at the counter! I then had to wait with about 20 other customers for cars to become available. This was absolutely the worst rental car experience ever. This Payless shouldn't even be operating.Reviewed 12 Nov. 2015

Worst customer service experience in years.Pros:The car was fine.Cons:Wait times at this Fox/Payless location to get a car are beyond ridiculous for this day and age. Three agents and about 50 people in line. Upon return, there were over 100 cars lined up in maybe a dozen lanes, so that there was barely room to get our car over the "teeth" at the entrance and find room to stop and park it. The agent came promptly with her tablet and checked us out (and she was nice). But how can there be nobody moving checked-in cars, in a place as busy as LAX? When I asked one employee what was happening, he said "F*** you!" and gave me the finger as he walked past. Happy times.Reviewed 19 Apr. 2017

Run for the hills!Pros:Absolutely nothing. I have been renting cars as a businessman and personal traveler for 40 years. This was the worst car rental experience ever.Cons:First, I was told that, even though I had a confirmed reservation, there were no cars and the wait would 60 - 90 minutes. I had arranged this rental through Kayak. I will never use them again either. I paid for insurance online while making the reservation. No where was there a mention that this insurance was through a third party (not Payless). Payless could not see that I had prepaid for insurance and demanded that I buy insurance at the counter. I did not. When I finally got a car it was dirty and damaged. Most of the damage was noted on the Payless agreement but not all. Payless demanded that I prepay a $150 deposit and that the deposit would be returned to me within 7 business days after turning the car in with no further damage. We'll see if that happens. When I complained about the deposit, the clerk told me that I was welcome to rent from someone else. This was a rental at LAX so maybe it's just that facility that is horrible. I won't take the chance. In the future, I'll rent from anyone but Payless. Once was enough. Poor car, poor customer service.....a bad combo.Reviewed 30 Mar. 2017

Ups and DownsPros:Ms. Walker! When we had to return the original vehicle because of a flat tire, Ms. Walker was the best! At first when we returned the minivan it seemed we were going to have issues. No one was at the front desk. A gentleman waiting there said he had been waiting for an hour to talk to a manager. But we were told to go out and wait for a minivan to show up. Once that showed up we could start the process of transferring the contract. Ms. Walker was awesome, she made sure we got another vehicle, she made sure our paperwork was done before we were even done transferring our luggage to the new vehicle and she upgraded us for our inconvenience. The thing is she was great before all of that. When she walked up to the counter, she had a smile on her face, she was friendly and she sparkled, literally! Thank you Ms. Sheila Walker! you made what could have been a terrible way to start a road trip so much better!Cons:I will say this some of your practices need to be looked at. When I rented the vehicle, the agent at the counter could not take no for an answer when she offered insurance. I spent no less than 5 minutes telling her that I did not want the insurance you offer. At the same time there should have been some communication about the $150 deposit that was placed on the card. When I called the customer service number for the LAX location the voicemail box was full. When I called the 800 number to talk to someone I was told to call the location. When I asked to speak to a supervisor I finally was able to talk to someone, and he gave me an attitude.Reviewed 16 Feb. 2016
