KAYAK’s top tips for finding a cheap flight from Sydney to Madrid

  • Sydney to Madrid is a long journey and requires one layover or more along the way. If you wish to freshen up prior to your flight, you can use the free public showers at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). There are showers available on Level 2 in Departures, between the check-in counters A and K. There are also some located close to Gates 31 and 51. If you need soap or a towel, you can buy some at the retail outlets.
  • Are you travelling to Madrid with your family? Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport offers family-friendly facilities to ensure a smooth journey. Children can enjoy the kids’ play areas near the check-in counters in Terminal 1 and around Gates 31, 33, 49 and 59. Throughout Terminal 1, there are also parent rooms with baby changing facilities. Each room is equipped with private nursing cubicles and changing stations. To warm up some milk for your baby, there are also microwaves.
  • Do you often use your electronic devices while travelling? At Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, there are mobile charging stations that are free to use in the international terminal. These stations provide chargers for all phones and are located on both Level 1 and 2. If you want to buy a charger, you may find them at Heynemann Tax and Duty-Free, Australia Post or WHSmith.
  • For travellers looking to journey to and from Sydney’s airport via public transport, we recommend the Sydney Airport Link train, which runs between the airport and the city throughout the day. While taxis and bus services are available, the train is generally the cheapest and quickest option from the city centre, especially for those travelling alone or as a couple.
  • For travellers looking to journey to and from Madrid’s airport via public transport, we recommend taking the Metro Line 8 which runs from Terminal 4. There is also a train service operating from Terminal 4 and bus services operating out of all terminals. For bus services, look for lines 101, 200, and EXPRÉS-203.
  • Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) is the main airport servicing Sydney and much of the surrounding area. For travellers looking to stay in New South Wales, unless there is a regional airport close by, it is recommended to travel into Sydney Airport and continue the rest of the journey by land.
  • Similarly, for travellers planning to stay in the provinces surrounding Madrid, such as Guadalajara, it is recommended to travel into Madrid Airport and continue the journey on land as Madrid is the main international airport for the surrounding region.
  • There are no direct flights between Sydney and Madrid and many of the airlines flying the route have two stopovers. For those wanting to spend less time travelling and more time holidaying, we suggest looking at Emirates Airlines and Qatar Airways as these airlines offer several options with only one stopover per flight.
  • For travellers looking to exchange their currency in Sydney before departing on their journey, we suggest looking at Global Exchange’s Click & Collect service. Allowing you to pre-order your currency of choice before you fly and pick it up at the airport, the Click & Collect service is a hassle-free way for travellers to exchange their money.

Seats are not as easy to move as you would hope in premium econo Y

The flight experience was good, but connection time was cut shorted because of delayed start.. it would have been helpful if the flight showed which gate/terminal we need to go for connecting flight and flight timing was less than 30 minutes to connect which made ourselves stressful to catch next flight 😔

Very good!! If at all, the business class chair/bed was bit small!! It’s because of older plane- as was told!

It was economy plus. That is all. I literally felt like traveling in economy class with a little extra leg room. Poor food. V restricted options. Worst of all POOR CREW ATTITUDE.

Absolutely horrible all around especially for such a long 13-14 hour flight - terrible food - ancient entertainment - legroom worse than a short air Asia flight - not enough toilets

The plane was very old and uncomfortable. Service was very slow!

I didn't travel from the start I changed my ticket long time ago

Flight good but it was 30min late taking off. Also don’t like landing then being loaded on bus and driven around the airport like it’s a sightseeing tour.

we bought trip insurance from you and could not use it. 'underrated' only return 50 % of trip cost. my doctor told me i have stage 4 cancer and that I might not live till the end of the month..

Flight was delayed and no information was provided what was new time Change gate 3 times at Madina airport First gate was 113 Second gate was 204 And last gate was 113 again

Dinner was served at the wrong time as soon as we boarded. Most were sleeping.. there was no food service carts for hours. We had to specifically ask for water, snacks etc. for the 15 hour plus flight, there should have been 3 meals served. Instead we only got the breakfast 1 hour before landing. Will try other airlines like Qatar for future travels.

No proper procedures or announcements for boarding. Not even water was served on flight. Could not check in on line. This option was not available .

The flight was delayed for half an hour, hope this can be better

The employees are very nice and good. The delay due to the aircraft is not a good thing. Planning for such problems should be an easy task.

The crew staffs are very nice. The temperature is too low.

I booked Flexi ticket, Paid extra for extra legroom seat. What I got was worst ever place to sit. It was an emergency exit seat with lots of legroom but half of the seat was occupied with aircraft body. Means you don’t keep that seat where a passenger can’t sit. The seats are too narrow. Whole night I was awake. Not movable armrests. One of the worst.

There is very little in the title" Premium" in the Economy experience with Cathay, Melbourne to Hong Kong. The seats are uncomfortable and the cabin with outdated 1990's decor and trim. The food service was sloppy and the leg room providing little to no advantage over regular economy seating. Infact, the Sunday flight was not fill occupancy and I would have done better saving the significant additional costs for the PREMIUM ticket and taken advantage of the seating. If you are a regular premium economy traveler of EMIRATES expecting the same experience on CATHAY, you will be disappointed. Emirates far superior.

Bad experience. Departure time delayed from 1610 to 1740. After the flight was pushed back, pilot said there was a technical issue on the aircraft and we couldn’t take off. Delayed another hour to solve it.

The flight was cancelled. I wasn't informed where to check in, how and when. It wasn't easy to get in contact with Cathay service representative, and they were not very helpful... The staff on the airport - Air Canada (I assume) were the most helpful, kind efficient, patient... Thank you for all your help and care, for your patience, for your professionalism!!!

The first economy rows have remote space in the seat which eats in the seating space. The seats are also smaller compared to other airlines.

Boarding catastrophic let alone have to claimb the plain rather than using jetway. 5.5 hr delay leaving had to do stop in Lgw for a new crew which further compounded the delay. Connecting flight would not wait and had to pend a night in a hotel. Curiously my seat would not go full flat.

Good. The food was very bad. Except for the chicken rice, rest of the dish went to trash.

Seat selection screen while online check-in could include free seats to choose from and show the options before we proceed. Currently, it is auto-allocated and there are no options for free seat selections.

Liked leg room Disliked unable to book to sit with my family on same flight without paying extra

1st time with. Etihad Airways and it was amazing from check in to crew. Great flight.

In my opinion, Etihad Airways is a first rate airline except for one important element. On the day before my return flights, when I chose my seats on the Etihad website I was charged an additional $55 (US) in order to sit on the aisle. I was not at all happy about this additional "hidden" charge and I felt cheated.

The staff was very nice and polite but it was very very hot and no ways to have some fresh air. It would be nice to have more time to sleep since it was a night flight

My wife and I were upgraded to Business Class on our Dublin-Abu-Dhabi flight on the 22nd of January. Being served by "Mariyan" (not too sure about her name, she's from Tunisia) was the real highlight of our flight, she deserves to be working with etihad. We are looking forward to the next upgrade as we are flying back to Dublin on February 01, 2024. If I am not mistaken we have just reached GOLD status as Etihad Guests.

I WOULD ADVISE NOT TO BOOK YOUR FLIGHT ON KAYAK. THEY SHOW BETTER FARES AND AFTER I BOOKED MINE, I FIND OUT THAT IT DID NOT INCLUDE LUGGAGE. i HAD TO PAY $800 TO CHECK IN MY BAGS.

Very unfriendly team. It was very difficult to get a cup of coffee. Legroom was extremely small. Old, dilapidated plane.

Price is the main attraction. Staff is OK but difficult to communicate with them due to general lack of English. Food is truly abysmal, the main courses (4) were barely edible. The choices for breakfast served at 5:30 am prior to landing at Gatwick airport were Spaghetti Bolognese or seafood fried rice. Choices offered for all 4 mains were either something rice or noodles. Shanghai airport layover is much too long in a very poorly serviced airport. We were unable to use WiFi; private lounges required cash only payment with no ATM or cash exchange open.

I was surprised and appreciate that they actually served a hot meal on such a short, early morning flight. The check in and boarding was hassle free and most of all my Alliance Status / Code Share was recognized and the revelant courtesy was extended; other than some needed attention to detail concerning the cleanliness of the cabin, and some unnecessary aggressive wording their safety briefing, it was an overall pleasant flight, and I would certainly fly with them again.

Flight was delayed for more than 3 hours, food was mediocre, seat didn’t recline

I think it’s time that somebody set a standard for the temperature in the cabins. I would rather it be colder than anybody that wants to have a blanket have a blanket to keep it so warm at times is unbearable and quite uncomfortable. That’s the only thing I would add.

For the price we paid, I couldn’t complain. Was good value for money. Service was excellent but food was mediocre. Crew were excellent and spoke English. You will never go hungry. The food was ample but was mediocre. Entertainment limited and wifi doesn’t all allow you to access some social media. The best part was comfortable seats and bed (business class) with a screen to close out the rest of the cabin.

For the price we paid, we had a really good flight. The seats and bed (business class) was extremely comfortable. I have no complaints. The crew were very attentive and helpful. They spoke English and there were no misunderstanding although their English wasn’t perfect or fluent. You will never go hungry as there was ample food and drinks but their food for mediocre. The entertainment was limited to older movies and the wifi didn’t allow you to access some Social media. Apart from the above, it was a very pleasant flight. Would highly recommend them.

Cheapest option from Gatwick £400 cheaper than Emirates and Qatar. Entertainment no where near as good as Emirates and Qatar, but saved £400 so all good.

Great staff and food. Seats pretty uncomfortable but plenty of legroom. Entertainment system outdated.

How do you run out of beer after one hour of a twelve hour flight?!

Flight was fine, however we were not able to check in online, this adds to travel stress. Luckily check-in at Heathrow was quick, but we did not get the seats we paid extra for. We paid for a window and 2 aisle seats from Shanghai to Tokyo leg, but they changed us to middle seats. Not good :(

Chinese flight attendants didn't speak english well. They didn't care enough to remember that I (east asian who isn't Chinese) wasn't Chinese and spoke English. Announcement in english on board was poor and I find it very difficult to understand what was announced. Also, a cabin bag allows only 5kg!

Chinese flight attendants didn't speak english well. They didn't care enough to remember that I (east asian who isn't Chinese) wasn't Chinese and spoke English. Announcement in english on board was poor and I find it very difficult to understand what was announced.

Everything was not satisfactory - the flight was delayed, staffs were ok but they didn't speak English well. I am from east Asia (not Chinese) and they didn't care enough to remember that I wasn't Chinese but persistently spoke chinese to me. The flight announcement in english wasn't clear to understand.

I wish I had been able to choose a vegetarian meal. Crew friendly and helpful. Seat was ok. All quite efficient and pleasant. Would recommend for inner China travel for sure.

The flight is not bad, but the Business Lounge is not big enough for the quantity of people they accept and there is a limited options for food and beverages.

It was simply bad and on top of that my luggage hasn't been delivered until now. They can't even localize it which is just unacceptable when they are supposed to scan the bar code they put when we check in

We bought premium Economy, thinking it would be more comfortable, but the seat is so narrow ,that my legs and feet are swollen , I can't wear shoes !

The flight was delayed for almost 5 hours, but I understand that it was not up to the company, however how they could handle the situation better, they never apologized for that delay, moreover despite passengers being there for 7 hours only thing they did was to give a bowl of instant noodles, afterwards on the plane tiny snacks, people were there starting from lunch time and we’ve arrived to destination at almost midnight

Flight was delayed for 2 hours for no reason, then we spent almost an hour after boarding because of the weather conditions. If we left on time we could avoid that 😾

Cons: "Everything was great. Very nice and friendly crew, clean plane, great food. Excellent overall"
